Island Ford, Virginia Map

Shenandoah marks this trail as “easiest” and I would disagree due to the fact that the trail is a bit steep at some points and you are going up the entire way to the viewpoint. The view is amazing though! We saw a black bear cub along the trail right near the road to the campground. Short climb with a big pay off!

This trail was overgrown and full of pricker bushes. We made it about a half mile in and had to turn back because we were cut up so badly. If you are going to do this trail make sure to wear pants and long sleeves.

Great hike with amazing views! Easily marked. We took the left side up and watched the sunset from the second overlook. Absolutely gorgeous, and the hike back down in the dark wasn’t bad either. Can’t wait to go back & take the kiddos.

Short and easy hike with kids, with impressive views at the top! The outcrop is rocks were icy when we went (January) and slippery, but the kids thought playing on them were great fun!

Really well-marked trail with easy/moderate elevation climb. Our young children (6 & 4) hiked this fairly easily. Big payoff at the summit for the amount of work you put in to get there!

Fairly continuous elevation. It's a walk up to the summit and then back down in a loop. Went with wife and 3 yo daughter and had a lunch on top overlooking a great view. Two separate spots on the trail to have a great view from the top of the summit. Daughter had me carry her most of the way, but she had hiked a longer trail the day before and might've just been too tuckered out. Feel like a child could safely walk alone for the majority. Most of this trail is not near steep runoffs so fairly safe. One side has a fair amount of rocks. We went 12/23 and were the only people on the trail the entire time we were there..

Pretty good trail

Really overgrown in parts, but little foot traffic and great vista. If you aren't set on doing a loop, I think the 6 miles out-back might be more worth your time.

It is a very fun trail! There is a good amount of up hill but if you've done old rag you can definitely do this! The summit is pretty cool, but there is a lot of overgrown shrubbery. Just look out for the blue marks and stay on track. You can do it!

This trail was hard, it is a lariat so it is mostly uphill. But so worth it. We barely saw anyone else until we were almost back to the trailhead. The woods are recovering from the recent fire, but there is soot everywhere. Some areas were over grown in spite of the fire. Bring some wipes because if you grab onto a tree branch, most likely you will bring back a black hand. The view from the top was amazing, I plan to do this hike again.
