Many felled trees (including 2 with blazes on them). No particularly great water vistas. Don't forget your orange blaze during hunting season.

beautiful trail. everything about it was perfect.

Nice alternative to Burke Lake. Saw a few joggers and folks with dogs - not crowded at all. Paved trails, nice views, waterfowl. Very enjoyable.

Nice alternative to the Bright Hope Trail. Add a couple more miles and has a nice view of a pond.

Gorgeous hike. Beautiful scenery throughout hike.

11-17, took us 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. Very special hike with beautiful waterfalls. Lots of elevation gain (abt 2200 ft.)

11-18, Took us 2hr 40 mins to complete. Spectacular views along the Potomac. I think I’ve have given it a 5-star rating if it was an out and back but I didn’t love the 2nd half (away from the water). Overall a really nice hike. Not too much elevation gain.

Trail is not as well or clearly-marked as All Trails would make it seem. Make sure you print out a map or something. The park doesn't have any useful maps posted near trailheads or any explanation of what any of the trail markings mean.

It's a nice enough walk in the woods. There are different colored blazes and some stone trail markers with letters on them, but no explanation of what any of them are or mean. There's no map posted at any of the trailheads. Kind of a failure on the part of the park. Keep walking and you'll probably figure out how to get back to your car.

Beautiful 5 miles loop around the lake. The walk is easy and on asphalt.

To me this old Route 17 roadway is meant for biking and running. Just too boring for a walk. Straight, no hills, no turns. Great areas of shade and interesting areas paralleling the dark waters of the dismal swamp. Seems like it goes on forever.

Nice moderate quick hike with pleasant views and scenery. Not too heavily trafficked. Get there on the early side or the park itself gets crowded, though.

Hiked 15 miles with my son to complete a requirement for his Boy Scout hiking merit badge.

Trails need a LOT of maintenance. There is no trail from the Visitor’s center to Courthouse Road (even though this trail shows it). And the one from Courthouse road to road stop #2 is poorly marked and maintained. Not to mention there was gunfire close by and plenty of arrows stuck in trees along these ‘trails’.

nice trail for most of the way, it gets a little hairy when you pass the tucker gap sign and the trail is redirected to aboid private property. I'd suggest not going when leaves are on the trees so you can see all the markers more easily. i got pretty lost in the summer for about an hour before finding the trail again.

Beautiful. Challenging but doable. Will definitely go back.

awesome hike well worth it!

Mostly moderate with one difficult section. If you want a more gradual ascent go clockwise. Mix of forest and open areas. Some nice views. Bathrooms and gift shop at parking area. $5 entry fee. I went when very muddy. Had to use a hiking stick to keep from falling. Most of trail good footing but a few short sections very rocky. Trails very well marked and good trail guide available. Overall really enjoyed.

Great challenging trail. I’m 52 and not on great shape. This trail was an adventure. Each time I felt like turning around there was another spectacular view. Take time to take in the beauty and sounds of nature. Last leg starting from the South is very steep. Use poles along the way to stabilize. Breathe deep and complete this wonderful trail.

Gets windy. Bring a jacket.

A short day hike. The best view was actually at the 3 overlooks.

Must do for anyone who loves Civil War history like myself. Tons of history markers that gives you a feel of how the battle played out. Great park with a really nice vistors center.

The picture shown is not the backbone trail; it is the end of the Majestic Oak Trail. All the trails in the park off the Backbone Trail are super nice with great views of the water at the end. The main backbone trail is a less interesting connector that gets you to all the good stuff.

A little rocky, but overall a great hike for people and pups alike!

Awesome day with the family! The reward was well worth the hike.

Hidden gem! so many different trails that you can keep coming back and not see all the same things each time . Absolutely beautiful in fall!!

Quick hike to a neat waterfall

This trail was surprisingly fun with some decent incline and rock scrambles. Crowds are no joke but around the middle it was very thinned out (spent about 20 minutes just waiting to get to the gate of the park... then had to follow someone leaving in order to park). Annual passes to great falls are 30$ so might be worth it for people who plan on coming back a couple times. GORGEOUS fall colors.

I primarily use the Creeper for trail running, but have biked and even gone swimming in some great swimming holes along the trail. The Virginia Creeper is gorgeous, and offers a variety of great views no matter which section you are on. I love the farms and trestles on the Abingdon section the most.
