The trail head is actually really easy to find, and you park in a gravel lot right next to the trailhead. Don't go through the housing development...walk towards the trailhead. It is the CCT (Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail) that starts from the parking lot.
This trail has a diverse set of terrain to cover and a good mix of flat and climbs. 2 river crossings (big boulders and pillons to walk on while crossing). Gets pretty busy near the Great Falls Area--pretty empty on the stick part of the lollipop loop.

I went on this trail as a brand-new-to-Great-Falls person and was expecting a walking trail. The River Trail is DEFINITELY a hiking trail that requires frequent use of your hands for navigating hills and over rocks, and includes very steep inclines that will leave inexperienced hikers (like myself) out of breath and physically strained. You will spend most of your time looking at the ground to watch your footing and very little time enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Early March 2018, there were downed trees on the trail that were difficult to pass without being extremely nimble. A wet patch of mud on a slope caused me to tumble; I cut my palm on a rock trying to break my fall. I do not recommend this trail after any amount of rain. I cut this trail short and took a shortcut over to the Old Carriage Trail, which can be classified as a walking trail... very smooth and only slight inclines.

This park was listed as an Audubon Hotspot for birding year-round but we hardly saw any birds at all (early March). We saw the most birds near the parking lot (and just common birds). Disappointing.

Pretty easy hike. There's a couple steep hills, but nothing too strenuous. There's not much to see, so it drags a bit. Not sure if someone else covered this, but you take two other trails from the parking lot to get to the trail. It's a good trail if you're just trying to get some miles in.

All types of trails rolled into one hills, flats, views.
Had different views at different sections of trail. Vista views from high points, River views, Lake views, and beautiful views thru the woods.
Trail was marked very well easy to follow and well maintained even after a bad wind storm. Will be returning in Spring, Summer, and Fall to enjoy this park and trail system.

Probably more moderate, in reality, but there are some pretty draw-out climbs that can be tough on the quads. North Ridge links with a few other sections (including the AT) in Sky Meadow State Park, and has some really great views of the surrounding area. Trail is pretty well maintained and wasn't all too busy (even in the middle of the day), though there are some sections covered in fallen trees/branches from recent windstorms in the area. Overall a fun day hike!

Great views on the initial ascent up the mountain. It’s was pretty muddy considering all the recent rain but the higher I got, the dryer the trail. After a stream crossing, and another long climb, the North Ridge meets up with the AT. Here the trail turns into open pastures and more great views.

one of my favorite places I have ever ran.

best app for all the trails, deff the best I have had, good job!!!

A difficult trail due to the rocky terrain. However, the views of the valley offer a great reward. One of my local favs.

We are doing a research on the Shot Tower after we been there please answer this question

How far did the shot tower fall?

If you could help me that would me great!

Short but steep, great view at that top, well maintained just watch out for horse droppings! Will definitely do again!

The trail does not connect the way it is shown on the map. It dead-ends resulting in 4 miles of backtracking.

Great hike!

I really enjoy the trails at Manassas. Great place to take the dog on a weekend.

Very rocky trail... great workout.

I ran this trail on a 75 degree day in February; that alone could have made it a great experience. Coupled with this was one of the best waterfalls I’ve seen in Shenandoah- about a mile into the trail.

Otherwise, it should be noted that I was mislead by the picture of the knob tagged with this trail. If you’re seeking a hike that will end with a view such as this, look past Stoney Mountain.

Trails are great. To bad we went after a week of rain so most of them were washed out. Would definitely go back and try again on a more dry week. Lots for the family to see. My little girl loved it and had a blast.

The Channels are amazing! We went on a cold rainy day, but it was totally worth it.

This was a much better hike than I expected it to be. I’ve been to Great Falls Park a number of times to look at the falls but wasn’t aware that there was a loop with some elevation and rocky parts and more challenge than I expected. It was also beautiful - a warm winter mid-week day with few people and great views through the bare trees. I highly recommend it for a good hike close to downtown DC.

very rocky, but worth the hike to the top. Great views, have done this hike 5 times and still look forward to doing it again.

The trail the app took us on was extremely challenging by horseback - borderline dangerous. Thank goodness we had good horses! Wouldn’t recommend riding in the wintertime as the trail was frozen solid at the highest points of the path. Several really slippery, rocky, mountainous areas where we dismounted & lead our horses. No doubt a beautiful hike but wouldn’t recommend for horses.

Sky Meadows is a terrific park, yet another affirmation of Virginia's outstanding park system. This was a cold, rainy day - but an outstanding loop. Some of the best marked trails anywhere. The ranger at the office/store suggested going clockwise, which was great advice as the most rapid elevation gain is the first third going up the South Ridge - leaving the beautiful meadows and spectacular views for the final third and descent back to park HQ. On this winter day, the trails were a bit icy, especially the South Ridge, but doable. The brief stretch on the AT is well maintained and very passable.

Good workout, started in the afternoon. Parking was a problem. Go early.
The channels was great. A good view is to be had Northeast of the Fire Tower.

A great hike,Hoss and I hiked around 12 miles starting on the Gibson trail, which had a great climb. We went up on the ridge trail which was a winter wonderland, very beautiful!! Then we came off at Star light cave which was beautiful!!

walked several times. good urban trail. highly recommend for midweek morning hike to avoid heavier bike and other hiker traffic.

It’s just 3.4 miles if you hike up to the top and back down without going on other trails. Easy and quick hike in Blacksburg, VA.
