Trail was okay for the hike to the top of Bear Den Mountain. View was okay. However, the ticks were REALLY bad at the top and in the field near the parking lot. We sat down for a snack and had to pack up and leave because the ticks were crawling over us. So, if your going out soon, be tick prepared.

I went clockwise, saving the water crossings for the end. I counted 7 total, half I was happy to have my sandles for. It had just rained for 2 days before, so the crossings were higher than usual. Really enjoyable! Good uphill first mile, a lot of mtn laurels starting to bloom. get ready for bigger groups once you split from the AT to Turk's Mtn trail to the summit. a pretty rocky way up. nice long downhill few miles, the water crossings and then a mile incline slope to finish up.

Nice loop, gentle up and down. Nice views this time of year.. we started from the end of Jarmans Gap road. 10.3 miles.. 4.5 hours with a few breaks.

Short hike up to a

Great, easy trail. Enough incline to get the heart rate up, but not enough to smoke you. Pretty vista from Little Calf MTN Summit, Calf Mountain Summit left something to be desired. close to South SNP entrance.

Well marked, easy jaunt with a 9 year old in crocs on a 38 degree day (discovered half way up!- on the ascent to Dad of the Year ceremony!) Radio towers harshed my mellow but side view previously mentioned was okay. Easy trip up and back to get the blood flowing!

Did this one on an unseasonably warm (67F!) late December day, it was gorgeous - all the benefits of being able to see through the bare trees, without the cold! If you do it anticlockwise as I did, you have a docile first couple of miles then a long 3.5 mile slog of sustained elevation gain; going clockwise would probably feel easier overall, but you leave yourself with more work to do in the last few miles. I had done Turk Mountain on its own before but it’s definitely worth adding it in here for the views and the summit satisfaction. Also, my recording was 10.3 miles, a bit above the 9.6 AllTrails has listed for this hike.

No major issues here, the view was not stunning but the meadow up top made up for it. We should have taken a blanket. It was a great hike and time I only give it four stars because of the view. Great for dogs and kids!

We and our dog really enjoyed this hike! It’s a challenge, but totally doable. Great views from the top. We saw a deer and a juvenile bear — so keep an eye out. Pro-tip: Head to Pro Renata brewery (about 25 minutes away) for a celebratory beer when you’re done!

Excellent way to hike the AT without trying too hard! My mom has a bum knee and bad hips and is out of shape and it was hard for her but she did it. Lovely view at the summit, about 1.5 miles from the parking area. There are porta-potties at the trail head too.

An excellent shorter hike for all ages. A good amount of shade and a nice view at the top of Little Calf Mountain. Trail was in great shape after last nights rain.

This was a nice quiet hike. It’s great if you want to put in base miles or building up to do longer hikes. Not a challenging climb. Calf Mountain summit is a great view on a clear day. The hike doesn’t have many views and mostly shaded and in the woods. There is a detour as soon as you get to the trail head that extends the hike. I recommend keeping the All Trails app open to make sure that you are staying on the recommended trail. There are many paths/openings that can be deceiving. Some of the path is overgrown and makes it seems that you are going the wrong way. Our total mileage was 9.5 with the detour and visiting the Calf Mountain Shelter. We have a Vizsla and she enjoyed every bit of the hike.

Nice easy hike. Not a huge view but a decent panorama on little calf. Nice flowers at the beginning. Mostly a very gradual build up to the top.

Hiked loop without going to top of Turks mountain. Most of trail was in excellent condition. Climb was a workout but manageable. Very hot day and little water in the streams so stream crossings were not a concern. Saw great concentrations of butterflies and wildflowers along trail.

Fun quick hike. Took us about 40 minutes. Total hike had about 350 feet of elevation. The view at the top wasn’t anything special. Lots of radio towers at the top. The local amateur radio group keeps water up at the top for hikers which is awesome!! Thank you KC8MTV amateur radio group for supplying water and an amateur radio repeater for hikers to use.

This trail is good for incline training or a short hike. The end of the trail leads to radio towers on a hill. The path is very pretty! Covered in greens and wildflowers! There were butterflies everywhere! So much fun!

Easy hike with a nice view at Little Calf Mountain. Calf Mountain itself (where this hikes turns around) is nothing special. Trees cover the summit so there are not any views. A small pyramid of rocks marks the approximate summit of Calf Mountain, but it's not much to see. The views from Little Calf Mountain and the wildflowers (including common milkweed, not sure about the others) between the Beagle Gap parking lot and the tree line are the highlights of this short hike.

Great mostly shaded trail that worked with kids. Wish I had my wildflower field guide with me-lots to see!

Beautiful trail, well maintained. The shelter area is very clean. Easy hike for kids included!

Short and easy hike, good for kids. There aren't any stunning views but the towers are pretty cool.

Nice easy hike for anyone. If you only want to go to little calf mountain summit it is only around .75 miles.

Little Calf Mountain is the highlight of this trip. It is worth the 1+ mile hike to get to the summit (which is just an open field). The views are great and it is also a really great spot for star gazing on clear nights.

Nice easy hike for all ages and abilities. Alltrails has a shelter listed just past the summit on the right. I never saw that one. Walked about 30 minutes past the summit to a sign on the left for a shelter. While on the app, I read a review to look for two large oak trees; you can't miss them. Walk another 5-7 minutes past the oak tress and you will see a sign for the shelter about 1/4 off the trail. There is a nice spring just a few yards from the shelter. You can drop your pack at the shelter and walk back to the spring for water, which was the only source of water we saw.

Not too strenuous, but also not too eventful - one decent view of the "summit" and another under some powerlines but that's about it. It's decent if you're on this side of Shenandoah but you can find much better.
