Began at AT trailhead at Ashby gap and followed AT to whitehouse overlook to view Paris valley. Doubles back to head toward south ridge trail and used the old AT trail to circle back to trailhead. AT has both canopy and clear areas with well maintained trails. Old AT is just about all shade and trails not used as much. View of Paris valley gorgeous on clear day. The hike is about 6 miles using this loop and trail is generally easy. To moderate

Very pretty trail. Nice views, wild life, flowers, birds, small waterfall. Some sections are open, so sun protection is a must. If I did this, again, I would reverse, the direction (start to the left). Lots of other trails in the park, camping and other events.

Enjoyed this change of scenery with some open areas and of course good views.

Beautiful hike! Took Piedmont Overlook trail up to Ambassador Whitehouse - pretty steep but worth for the views of Paris, VA. Then connected onto the AT trail for a short period of time prior to linking up on the north ridge trail which has some technical down slopes. All in all a good day with views and rolling hills. some of the distances on the map they gave us seemed a little off.

Great place to for those who love to hike and our fur friends. Went there thinking it was going to be an easy hike but being on the side of the mountains, it was harder than expected. Beautiful views of the country side. It can definitely get hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

Great trail for a family hike and picnic. Easy enough from the Rt 50 side (Liberty Hill Rd. trailhead) for a 5-year old to complete the out and back without too much trouble.

A beautiful hike; those rolling hills aren’t a joke though, the 1000+ of elevation gain wore us out. There were a good number of people out today, but there’s lots of intertwining trails which helped provide a pretty relaxed and serene experience spreading everyone out. We’ll definitely come here again.

Accessed from AT Trailhead at Ashby Gap to Whitehouse trail, North Ridge trail, South Ridge Trail to AT and returned by Old Trail to make for a longer hike. Gorgeous views of Paris valley on a crisp morning. State park trails well maintained and wide-easy to hike. Initial access had moderate incline. Old AT trail nice and generally avoids open fields unlike current AT trail. This route around 8.8 miles for a good workout.

Sky Meadows is a terrific park, yet another affirmation of Virginia's outstanding park system. This was a cold, rainy day - but an outstanding loop. Some of the best marked trails anywhere. The ranger at the office/store suggested going clockwise, which was great advice as the most rapid elevation gain is the first third going up the South Ridge - leaving the beautiful meadows and spectacular views for the final third and descent back to park HQ. On this winter day, the trails were a bit icy, especially the South Ridge, but doable. The brief stretch on the AT is well maintained and very passable.

Rolling hills, beautiful trees and flowers - perfect hike for the spring. Be cautious however - in the summer it can get very hot and there are limited "shady spots" on this hike so be prepared!

Wooden area, majority of hike you are hiking up the mountain in the woods - very pretty. Gets very steep and strenuous when nearing the top - legs got a beating! Once you've reached the top, it comes to a beautiful overlook. Trail intersects with the AT. Overall great hike - lots of informative signs and trail heads.

This is a nice little trail with some pretty views. Very little traffic. Those I passed were bird watching.

Had a nice trail run coming from the AT on the Rt 50 side, connecting with the "Old Trail" (not a soul on it) and then looping through the Ambassador Whitehouse trail. I like this route a lot better than the typical Sky Meadows trailhead route. Ambassador Whitehouse is nice either way.

A good trail run with plenty of solitude when coming from the AT off of Rt. 50. Deer and rabbits are pretty tame.

I love Sky Meadow and all the trails there are a lot of fun.

This review is for the trails in Sky Meadows park in general. We made a loop using the north and south ridge trails, gap run, piedmont overlook, and Boston Mill rd. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Use the trail map they give you and choose your own path. The trails are well marked; no chance of getting lost. It rained heavily the day before and some while we were there. Trails were a little muddy and rocks were slick but manageable. Even wet, I'm not sure I'd rate the north ridge trail as difficult. We didn't hike the whole thing so maybe it's more challenging in parts. I'd rate the entire hike as easy to moderate. Some moderate grades but nothing crazy. Lush foliage and beautiful views from a view spots. Nice benches to stop for a snack. Great spot for a day hike. We plan to go back to camp and explore more trails.

Great hike. Next time I would definitely complete the hike finishing with the Piedmont Overlook section (the 0.6 mile section). That way you finish coming down the hill with a beautiful view of the landscape beneath you. Next time I'd shorten the hike on a high heat summer day that it was when we did the hike and go with, Gap Run, to North Ridge, to Piedmont Overlook. Happy hiking!

We hiked a partial loop of the Blue Ridge backcountry area, starting by the visitor center and historic farmhouse. We thought it best to head up to the Piedmont Overlook first, given the late morning sunny conditions on a warm June day. The short but steep climb did not disappoint. We continued on the wooded North Ridge Trail, returning by way of the Gap Run Trail and Boston Mill Road (we also included the Snowden Loop). This was a special hike for me...a combination of wonderful trails, beautiful countryside views and sentimentality for coming back to my old Northern Virginia home and finally getting to hike Sky Meadows. I would love to return for a fall hike at some point to complete the rest of the backcountry trails.

This is a picturesque little fishing hole and picnic area with wonderful views of the rolling hillside surrounding Paris (probably my favorite small northern Virginia town when we lived in the D.C. area years ago). I had a very sentimental feeling being back and walking in this spot before heading over to hike the park's main trails for the first time.

This is an easy mile loop on an enjoyable grassy and partially wooded trail with some pretty views of the rolling hills and farmland. It was a good warmup for us for the Piedmont Overlook area. The trailhead is in the first section of the Lost Mountain parking area, just to the right of the barn.

The trail list in All Trails as Piedmont Overlook is actually a combination of trails encompassing the The Blue Ridge Backcountry of Sky Meadows State Park. The combo of trails shown by All Trails is Piedmont Overlook 0.6mi, Ambassador Whitehouse 1.1mi, Appalachian 2.43mi, North Ridge approx 0. 5mi, South Ridge 1.54mi depending on where you stop and start. I'm only reviewing the Piedmont section , Dog friendly, kid friendly.

This was great! If we ever do it again we would go the opposite way so that we ended with the view. It was a great hike. Benches along the way for a rest. Some sun and some shade. A mixture between some steep hills and flat trails. The meadows were pretty as well!

definitely not for kids. more experienced and people in good shape. start of the trail will make you stop to catch your breath.

Very nice. Intersecting trails give lots of options

Took Piedmont Overlook to Ambassador Whitehouse to Appalachian Trail to North/South Ridge. Great views and varied terrain. Piedmont Overlook trail is pretty vigorous on the way up but you're rewarded with a great vista and lots of trail options. Well marked and maintained.

amazing day, beautiful weather, been coming here for years. great place to hike

We stumbled on this area by accident. We had a few good hours to hike, which brought us to Sky Meadow. Hiking up Piedmont is slow going, but the views are worth the trek. We followed the recommendations of others on this loop. At the top of the Ambassador Whitehouse trl is a beautiful view of Paris below. The trail intersects with the AT, but then turns back into the woods onto the North Ridge trl. Very glad to take the South Ridge trl down. It meets up with the Snowden trl, where you can see remnants of the old homestead.

Absolutely gorgeous views. Kids handled it.
Loved the views. It was a gorgeous day and not
Too crowded.
