Explore the most popular birding trails near Crozet with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

before you make the final right turn near the top there are some boulders on the left that offer a good view and some fun climbing. lots more room here than at the top so an ideal spit for lunch.

The beauty of this trail is unsurpassed. You hike through a forest with the river by your side. There are 3 river crossings. The third one was high (due to recent rains) so we removed our boots. The waterfall at the end of this hike was spectacular.

One of our favorites! A lot to see along the way; rivers, swimming holes, old dwellings. Very dog and kid friendly. Easy to spend a half day exploring.

It was a surprisingly great trail that has a rock scramble that allows for a bit longer and less traversed hike to meet back with Trayfoot trail. Took three kids and a dog, all loved it and it was pretty easy. Hawskbill is my favorite Skyline Drive hike but this is a close second.

Great hike. Loved that it wasn't heavily travelled. Fun rocks to climb on and sit on at the top. Great views!

I love this trail, but it is not that easy, not great for kids or older folks. Lovely views the entire hike up during winter/early spring and amazing views all the way around from the top. Very rocky toward the top.

Great hike with my dog. Highly recommend

More of a moderate then easy hike for kids. Otherwise great hike!

Awesome views on the summit!

Good trail for hiking. I hiked the outer fire trail and it was just about 3 miles. The start of the trail has a fairly steep incline to start which will give you a good workout! The rest of the trail had gradual inclines and declines. All in all I nice Sunday hike!

Quick hike, awesome view at the end. A 360 view if the mountains. Even took our 20 month old in a off road stroller but was a little rocky going up some parts for that but still worth it. When you get to the AT stay to the two right paths and you’ll make a loop back. Happy hiking!

Very easy, short hike with beautiful picturesque views at the top. Will be very crowded on nice weekend days. Little rock scramble at the end.

So much fun rock scrambling!! Beautiful views!

Great hike, took around 1.45h with breaks to enjoy the wonderful view.

Beautiful views at the end of the trail of the valley. Well worth your time!

Great hike to take children and pets on. Nice rock formation to scramble around on and find a spot to eat a snack on!

Amazing view at the top. Overall good hike.

This week of clouds finally parted to give us an amazing view from above the clouds. There is also an earthcache here for those familiar.

We took the AT from Blackrock Summit parking area to the left on the Rockytop Trail and then another left toward Austin Mountain as we were doing the complete ridge loop down to the fire road and back up Furnace Mountain. The Rockytop portion of the trail [and Lewis Mountain "may" be a bit better] was nice walk in the woods at first and then we went along the left ridge through the rockpiles, which are pretty cool, and then down to the fire road. Views are ok, and rockpiles are a neat feature to pick your way through, but there are better trails nearby with more bang for your effort.

Nice little hike. Nice views and some opportunity for scrambling before the end of the trail. Moderately crowded on nice weekend days. Took about 2 hours up and back.

Two beautiful views at the end; short but challenging hike.

We did this as part of a 13 mile loop that included the AT, Furnace Mountain and Blackrock Summit. Going counterclockwise and starting from the Blackrock Summit parking area, we went down the AT to take a left along the ridges down to the fire road. From there we went up to Furnace Mtn, then on to Trayfoot. As Trayfoot is not much to look at, we continued to the Blackrock Summit Spur trail and saved the best views for the end of our trek. Great 360 degree views from the top and the rock formations are fun to walk around on. We saw a "rock" guitar and met a huge black bear on the trail down to the parking area. Great trail offering lots of variety.

Loved this hike. Ends at an outcrop of rocks perfect for the view. If you're really adventurous you can climb the rocks to the top of the outcrop for a great panoramic view.

Beautiful hike, loose rocks and very rocky on the last incline. Beautiful view on the way up, and once you reach the top. Enjoyed this hike!

Hike starts on the opposite side of skyline drive from the parking lot. Loose rocks on the incline. View from summit is very nice, even on an overcast day. My father and I enjoyed this hike a lot!

Hiked the Fire Trail to Big Survey Trail and then reconnected with Fire Trail all the way back to the swimming area. Great hike but saw a lost dog up the side of the mountain with no owner. When I asked the guard about it, he said nobody had reported a dog missing. Hope he's OK since there was nobody around and he was very skittish and wouldn't come to us.

Nice little loop. Can be kind of busy in the middle of the day, but overall good view.

Awesome views, dog-friendly - saw several dogs on the trail. Rocks at the top make for a fun little scramble.

Went with our teenage boys and two friends July 1, 2017It was a nice hike. Lots of little spots to get in the river. The water over the falls was low(which is normal in July). The pool below was about 3ft in the middle. We had a water moccasin laying on a log. And 2 babies swimming in the water. We kept our distance and Neither bothered with us.
