Nice hike, good workout, and less crowded than neighboring Sharp Top. Some notes:
-There are two trails to Flat Top's summit. The one linked here begins at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. This isn't where the actually trail begins, so you can either drive to the "overflow" parking past the first Lodge parking, walk past the Polly Woods Ordinary site on the paved path/road, OR 2) come in from VA-43 and park closer to the actual trailhead. The other trail, listed in Bedford, is a little further south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road is currently closed (at least coming from Peaks of Otter Lodge).
-The bathrooms in the Peaks of Otter vicinity were closed on Jan 1.
-There is a false summit when you're approaching the ridge, but you're not too far once you see that!
-There is an actual summit sign, so continue until you see that. The best view is on the first rock outcropping to the left. The views from the true summit are a little underwhelming.

Sprouts run is gorgeous!! truly. the river crossings didnt seem to be at ideal spots but the scenery makes up for the wet feet! Take extra socks for the way back down Wilson's mtn. Pretty views of the James but not sure it was worth the uphill climb and mtn goat path on the way down. I would turn around and go back Sprouts run. Add extra time for the logging road that connects the 2 when planning your trip and pack a picnic as there are several spots to sit back and enjoy nature. Will def do the run again!

Good little hike through the woods, a great way to get out into nature but nothing too rewarding just a nice time with trees and friends

Nice area to camp, hiking was easy. Trail around lake (Panther) was not maintained, ended up on road.

Don't even attempt to find this trail! The directions led me to a rock quarry

First so no one else wanders around aimlessly looking for the trailhead, it begins across the Parkway and just a little bit north. Good trail, although a little rocky

Could not find any trailhead!! The directions told me I arrived at a field.

Not really a hiking trail, more paths for walking than to hike. Not maintained at all, just a short loop by a lake.

A beautiful hike.... we started our hike at the overlook and were pleasantly surprised as we continued along the way. Good variation on the trail, including fields of butterflies, awesome rock/boulder area (great lunch spot) and if you continue about 50-yards further, a nice short rock climb. Other than the overlook, the summer doesn’t offer too many views of the mountain range.

This is a great area. Me and my husband got married up there. It was perfect!

The hike isn't too bad and the view is absolutely beautiful. The only downside is the sheer length of the trail that is made up of fist to head sized uneven rocks. they don't make much of a challenge on the way up, but are murder on the ankles on the way down. Hiking boots are heavily recommended.

The view was okay. The trail wasn’t well marked and was also overgrown. There was also a bunch of switch-backs. I’d say it was moderate because of how long it was to walk it. I have an injured knee and it wasn’t to hard on it. Just long. At least 3 plus hours.

It was great but I really don’t believe it is good for dogs. Rocky just about the whole way. Definitely hard on the paws

I love this trail! It's not challenging, but it's perfect for a leisurely hike if your company is not in the best physical shape, or if you're going to be wearing a 3-year-old in a pack for several miles! The scenery changes but is beautiful the entire time.

I’m completely new to mountain biking. Since we were camping 10 minutes away from here, and this was only going to be my second run, I figured I’d give it a shot. Kind of boring, definitely more for hiking. When I asked the people at the pay station about the trails and MTB’ing....even they seemed to think this location was definitely not meant for mountain biking.

Beautiful hike with some great views. My husband and I had a picnic on the rocks at the top.

This is my first "Hard" rated hike and this trail does not disappoint. We went before the tree canopy was in and the views all the way up were great. If you are in superb shape you might rate this as moderate. But, my 59 year old bones agree with the rating.

We hiked from parking lot off the Parkway to picnic area and back. It took a little over 5 hours. Good workout!

Beautiful View. I didn't do the trail because it was 19 degrees and super windy. But I was able to make it to the view point which was excellent and right off the park area. Ill be back for a hike.

starts off pretty easy and can get steep in some parts. not a whole lot for views, but it is secluded and we ran into some bears. towards the end, there is some forestry going on and multiple trails and it starts to get confusing. you will not find the mine on this trail.

I saw no creek on the trail, but there was plenty of water all around. It was a nice walk in the woods....

I only hiked in 2.5 miles following Sprouts Run. It was beautiful. This morning my son and husband complained of itching. They were covered with tiny ticks. I had to pull hundreds from them. So, please make sure you have LOTS of bug spray on you.

Great hike, not too busy, when you get to the top there's a fork with no sign, if you go to the right there's one small outcrop of rocks with a beautiful view & if you keep going on that trail back down you end up at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. If you go to the left at that fork you come to at the top there's a nice flat rock outcrop with a beautiful view that's better for relaxing/snacking! Rocks are slippery when wet!

Great hike, beautiful views and well maintained. Just be careful going down - the trail is mostly loose gravel so it's kinda like hiking on ball bearings

Great hike, pictures on Instagram:w.a.b.flicks

I did not hike this entire trail. I just went to the overlook, and I was shocked more people weren't there. Just 0.1 miles off the road, it was a gorgeous view. The weather on the top of the mountain was cool and windy, which was perfect for setting up a hammock on a summer's day.

This trail is really not that difficult. Neighboring Sharp Top trail is more strenuous.

My previous review was for the short Thunder Ridge Overlook Loop before AllTrails merged it with this small section of the AT. I made it back today with my family so they could enjoy the wonderful view from the picturesque stone lookout on a beautiful summer day. I will be back to hike the Apple Orchard Mountain area and hopefully can included a longer portion of this scenic stretch.

I made it about a mile and a half in I think. It was wonderful, until a bear crossed the trail. I was by myself and when it went back to the other side across the water, I turned around. I'll have to come back and finish it with a partner. It was my first and last solo hike!
