Went with my two dogs and thought it was a great trail. I got confused at first bc the trail is right behind the sign, if you go toward the gate it’s private property. It’s a fair amount to hills but the trail is clearly marked and offered and extra 0.2 miles if you take the blue loop.

I like this trail as a training hike. I usually strap on the full backpack and do it before setting off on a multi day hike. its peaceful, challenging and nice forest. Don't expect views from the peak.

Asphalt trail, can’t go far trail under construction. Drove a long ways to walk 2 miles

I loved the bridges and the boardwalk gave you a cool view of the mountains.

A really great hike. The hills will definitely get your heart rate up. Roots and rocks cover most of the trail. Saw quite a few people running or biking but everyone was courteous and looking out for others sharing the trail. There is no scenic overlook or amazing views, but this is a great hike for just being alone in the woods and hearing nature all around you.

Horse nettle is straight up hill. Had to walk that section, very challenging.

great for run training but bikes use it too so be aware.

Nice trail for a fun, quick hike

The hike starts out with a steep climb up Gateway trail. I took the connecting trail to Snake Root trail (and saw a snake!) then poverty creek horse trail to Jacobs ladder, another steep climb. Fantastic workout and an absolutely beautiful trail system. No dramatic overlooks but lush plant life, some wildlife, and pretty creek crossings along the way. I set up my hammock for a break at the base of Jacobs Ladder. I’m a fairly consistent weekend hiker ( not a runner) and it took me 4 hours and 18 minutes including my break. Had my chihuahua with me, too.

Great trail run to work on elevation training! Can be a challenging run at times. Views from the top are pretty nice. Continue on to Jacobs latter trail and get onto poverty creek to extend your run/hike.

It was so good to get out and hike on Gateway Trail, Easter Sunday afternoon. If like a good elevation climb, and only have an hour and a half, Gateway is a great up and back trail that will get your heart pumping .

It’s just 3.4 miles if you hike up to the top and back down without going on other trails. Easy and quick hike in Blacksburg, VA.

Boring hike. Nothing in particular worth seeing. Heavy traffic. More suitable for mountain biking than hiking.

Not really work the hike unless you're just testing gear or staying in shape

fairly challenging trail run, pretty much straight uphill ~2 mi up then at end of gateway can branch either way to add distance for a good out and back run

No views but the hike itself is through a very nice wooded area. Solid elevation gain for being so close to Tech campus. Park across the street (just a short ways down from where the trail starts) at the Heritage Park. There are many path options at the top where Jacob's Ladder trail appears, be sure to check out the trail map in the grassy area about a quarter of a mile in to see the options.

Nice little loop, nothing too special about the views but the proximity to Virginia Tech is nice

great trail, suprised at how well the forest service keeps it up. very well maintained. kudos to those guys

Wanted to start trail running. Seemed like a good one to start with. Nice scenic views.
