Such a great mountain and will always be one of my favorite homes ones! The trail itself is in great shape- and VERY well marked! Thanks ATA for keeping it so nice! A rather steep climb towards the middle- yet the last mile to the top flattens out.

I hiked the entire futures trail and would definitely consider it challenging, but not impossible by any means. Some long steep sections get the heart rate up, but there's other flatter parts that give you a nice break. I didn't see a single person until close to the top, which was quite peaceful especially near the running water. About 2/3rds of the way up you start smelling whiffs of Christmas trees (I believe it's pine). It's so pleasant I'd almost describe it as euphoric. The one downside is the summit truly is underwhelming, plus since it's road accessible, an already small area gets easily congested (to be fair I only saw the summit, none of the other views). What it lacks at the summit it makes up for along the way though, with several beautiful spots. I'd recommend it but be ready to work a bit (bring lots of food and water)

Overcast weather made for nice cool hike. 3200 vertical proved to be a good workout. Well marked. Be careful on decent as numerous boulders covered with moss can get slippery. Nice mountain to hike.

A beautiful view! One of the best I’ve seen so far but you definitely have to challenge yourself to make it to the top! Following the previous comment - I definitely questioned my life choices during this hike! Bring lots of water and wear some good gripping shoes for the slippery rocks! I did a lot of researching before doing this hike I will say all of these reviews have nailed it on the head!!!

The trail climbs to the top of Ascutney. None of trails up Ascutney are easy, but I found this to be one of the easier ones. I wouldn't call it hard and Ascutney isn't a mountain for beginners. There are a few rocky sections. It wasn't crowded and the mine/multiple vistas were a plus. The mountain has an auto road, so be prepared for a pile of tourists in flip flops when you get to the observation tower.

Great views. Trail well maintained and well marked. Easy hike and goof for kids...

started at about halfway up the trail via the auto road. was very narrow and hard to follow at times, but put up a good challenge. the summit area, the hang gliding platform, castle rock, and brownsville rock blew me away. 5 stars.

First of all, it should be said that it rained much of our hike, which we knew was going to happen going into it. It may have been a five star hike otherwise... It’s a beautiful trail with lots of relaxing waterfalls and streams and it smelled like Christmas trees, which was great even in the rain. And, yes, it was a butt-kicker. The other reviewers got that right. But it’s not scary rock face, scrambling kind of hard (which is always what I envision when I see a trail rated as “hard”). It’s just the huffing, puffing kind of hard on the way up and sore knees kind of hard on the way down. I definitely will try it again when it’s nicer out and I can actually see something from the summit.

Amazing 360 view from the top. Could see many mountains we have hiked in New Hampshire and Vermont. There was a picture that listed the mountains on the observation tower. Hike was very doable for a couple experienced hikers. The only challenge is the continued steepness. There were some slippery rocks but nothing that couldn’t be handled. I’d say most people other than beginner hikers could complete the hike. Can’t speak for the other trails that take you up to the top but will definitely be visiting again.

Hike is moderate to difficult. Plan for the day. Trail does not offer any views but panorama at the Summit makes it worth it! Lots of friendly dogs.

I passed two hikers less than a mile in, but didn't see a single person after that, except for those who drove to the summit. The trail is very nice and clearly lightly used, many sections were overgrown. There are several side trails you can take that lead to rocky, quiet views. This trail has a reasonable amount of up and down, and may not be great if you have knee problems.

It was a pretty good well managed trail but still very challenging. Not only was it very steep but the rocks were slippery. Still a fun trail with great views and things to see on the way.

( hiked this in 2015) This was just a giant mistake. My mum, sister and I were stupid. We hiked the windsor trail up (mistake one). We had the chance to take the slot trail down (we're camping on the mountain) instead we take this one because it leads right to our campsite ( big mistake two) we think it'll just be an quick and easy trip down.. no no it took us like 4 hours to get down and for us the trail wasn't in great condition at the time.. I slip and fall and bite the tip of my tongue off! SO.. I advise that unless you are a physically experienced hiker I do not recommended this as this hike was not great. beautiful view tho.

Did the entire futures trail from beginning to end. Me and my partner are both pretty fit and this hike was tough for us. The payoff off at the summit was rather disappointing. Liked that is was a more natural trail and definitely had a few pretty sections. The view from Brownsville was actually better than the summit. Wouldn’t hike it again though.

This is an amazing trail. Very well marked. So many spots to see views and the quarry is pretty neat. I will say if you have fear of heights this is not for the faint of heart. Will definately do again!

Just got back from this hike - this is sort of an updated post to my previous post. I finally completed the entire trail this time! This is still one heck of a but kicker of a trail! If your like me, You will be questioning your life choices. Mostly you will question the choice to hike this trail instead of any of the easier trails on the mountain. My dog and I started at 5:45 and we got back just before 8:30 - we ran some of the way down the mountain. Amazing views at the top though - especially at Brownsville rock - which in all my times hiking this mountain had never been to for some reason. We were there just about sunset - it was amazing!

Visited today and it was absolutely lovely! The trail was mostly dry and luckily there was one trail map left at the kiosk. I do agree with the person who wrote to keep the trail map open on your phone, as there are many offshoot trails. It is a big hangout for the Canada goose, as there were about 40 or 50 of them on the lake today. Highly recommended for adults, kids, and dogs!

Fun hike, started raining halfway through so can't say too much about the summit view but it was a great distance and elevation for a day hike challenge. There's a great spot a few miles from the base called the Path of Life Garden which is really breathtaking and I highly recommend taking time to see.

Rocky and steep

Wonderful hike. partly around the pond and then easy inclines up mountains. Toward the end, the maintenance is not great but with a little maneuvering it is possible to find the trail back. We parked at the Price Chopper lot across the street.

Was challenging in places, but overall not horrible. Nice look out at the old quarry. Probably not a hike I would do again, but not a bad hike.

I can only speak for the first three quarters of the hike as I didn't make it all the way (just simply ran out of time). I found myself very much unprepared for how steep this is even after hiking the weathersfield trail, bromley, stratton and killington over the past few months. Drink plenty of water before during and after as this is a good workout. And don't wear cotton (especially in winter)

Beautiful water throughout and a nice variety of terrain. If you have any knee problems, this hike will be challenging. There is not much of a view at the summit but there is an observation deck. Beautiful view from there but it can get very crowded.

Beautiful hike! However, parking is only on the street, not at trail head. Also, you will not find the name of the Trail anywhere on it- it is made up of about 5 trails, so it is best to keep the App map open or handy. Trail can be on the damp side.

Moderate difficulty, wouldn't call it hard. Lookout tower is sweet, but otherwise the view is hindered by tree line. The relics in the quarry are very cool. Overall I would hike this again.

This trail requires few hours to complete, very rocky, but definitely worth the hike, if you choose this trail and would like to finish please plan ahead with some snacks and especially remember bring enough water with you.

An easy hike in terms of elevation. Several narrow and soggy parts. Be sure to wear waterproof shoes and long pants, or wait until autumn. Some lovely views of the lake with lily pads in full bloom.

Love this trail. It's a comfortable ascent with outstanding views from the tower. I prefer taking Slab up to the summit, and then taking the Brownsville trail down, stopping to see the vistas from Brownsville Rock and Castle Rock before cutting onto Slot.
