Great night hike with friends despite the cold weather. Steep climb after you cross the stream and an intense, but short, scramble at the top. If you go while snow is on the ground be acutely aware of postholing between rocks during the scramble.

I wouldn’t have found the trailhead if it wasn’t for a car parked across the street from it. It was the longest short hike I’ve ever done, trudging and sweating all the way up and scrambling and falling all the way down. Even following someone’s footsteps 1 to 2 feet deep on the trail was hard. I expected a beautiful, Harry Potter movie-esque frozen lake with a clear surface but there was only snow. Wouldn’t have noticed if not for AllTrails keeping me on track. A nice man on skis made sure I was alright and took a picture for me near the lake (looked like a snowy field). On the way down the sun started setting and yeah, all I could think about was putting my foot down on something that wouldn’t give way an unpredictable amount each step. Fell over a log too, to add to the experience. I’m from California. I’m used to miles of dirt and dust. This was hard because I had regular street boots. Got soaked from the thighs down, drying off in my car now. Would try again in summer.

I have 2 cautions. Rattlesnake at the top hiding in the bushes and not straying off trail coming down. I was lucky not to accidentally annoy snake and lost trail and had to bushwhack back to trail.

I hadn’t seen any recent pictures of the trail so I thought no one could hike it anymore or it was covered in snow, but it was beautiful! Muddy and confusing at the beginning but the rest of the way was uphill covered in soft or packed snow, I wore regular street boots and I was fine. Can’t stress how gorgeous and calm it was. Didn’t see anyone else until I was halfway down. Had the entire living room to myself, haha.

The trail was in great shape today. Snow was packed down the whole way up. Spikes and hiking poles were a big help. I didn’t even need my gators.

lots of snow but mostly packed down so really slippery. recommend hiking with spikes rather than snowshoes.

Snow is packed, but not icy. It was a beautiful hike to the lookout today, though clouds obscured most of the view.

Safe Snowshoe on snowy days when avalanche danger is high elsewhere.

Because the road was closed at Little Dell Reservoir we snowshoed the to the pass for a total one way snowshoe of 5.9 miles. The powder was knee deep as we broke trail the entire length of the trail. Started snowing as we turned around and came down the road because we we exhausted from 6 miles of breaking trail.

Pretty cool hike. Made it about three miles before I realized I was wearing the wrong shoes. Super rocky and all I had on was sneakers.

Great snow after the climb. Beautiful views the whole way and spotted a deer family.

It was hard but rewarding. There is an icy section before the saddle that would be better with microspikes. It is still doable without. I ditched my poles for the scramble to the top. Could have left my pack too. It’s nice up top but now it is colder there isn’t much reason to linger up there. My only complaint is that you can hear the highway a third to halfway up the trail.
