I would probably give this a 5 if only it were a loop, rather than an out-and-back. The scenery in the creek bottom is splendid, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the challenges this trail presented. There are so few trails in Southeast Texas with any elevation changes at all that this trail, with it's steep descents and scrambles up creek banks, is a real treasure. Because the creek is spring-fed and there is a thick canopy of hardwoods much of the way, this is a relatively cool hike even on the hottest summer day.

Pleasant easy hike if you don't mind alligators. The first time we hiked this trail, we only heard them. This last trip, we saw two, one of which was quite large and far too close for comfort. I would not recommend bringing dogs or small children on these trails. If you do, keep them near to you.

The trails are not marked and the landscape presents few unique features (just acres and acres of pine timber), so it might be advisable to use the GPS to navigate. Because there are many more trails than are indicated on this map, it can be difficult to discern which turns to make to stay on this specific route. Keep in mind also that you may come upon wild hogs. We saw several areas where they had crossed over and rooted up the trail.

Such a fun experience! Touristy area no doubt but still so much fun to walk around and enjoy the area.

Enjoyed this hike. I was told the Girl Scouts will be out marking the trails this weekend to make for easier navigation. We stayed on the brown trail which starts after crossing the creek. It was a short but fun trail. We actually did the loop twice just to get at least 4 miles in. There is still cool running water in the creek (no toxic algae at this time) dogs enjoyed a good cool down at the end of the hike.

Nice light trail with a geocache close to the nature center. Trail is sandy unlike the other trails near the equestrian entrance. Nice and shaded for most of the loop.

1st hike here breaking in boots and pack for Montana Elk hunt. Nice up kept trails, little waterfall below dam. Trekked back and forth with a small buck and doe. As always idiots screw these nice places up with trash and glass.

Flat tire!!!

Amazing hike! Went all the way up to the two towers. The chain sections were a blast to climb. I felt as if it were easier up than down. Bring lots of water!

It is really pretty but there are parts of the loop that I wish they would clear, especially considering that the area has an abundance of water moccasins.

It’s about 1/2 mile around the parameter (main trail).

lots of shade and a really nice trail. the beginning had a bit of dog poop smell in 2 spots but you can quickly get out of range. most of the river is dried up except for at the very end of the trail. water was nice to wade around in. people were friendly. if you want to swim, expect a 2.5-3 mile hike to the end

Went earlier today. Plenty of parking at 10am, Monday. My dog loved this trail as a good portion of the trail had water access. This is my favorite trail of Austin so far with the River Place Nature Trail second choice. I like that the trail was not heavy trafficked today. The people and dogs we crossed paths with were all friendly. I love the shady coverage and look forward to returning soon.

There are no marked trails so it’s kind of, try to figure out where you’re going or just explore the property which is pretty neat. The restrooms seem to always be closed...there is a playground for kids, plenty of picnic tables, shade and a few grills. If you go over a holiday weekend, expect to see quite a few people and lots of trash everywhere...

Hot! Bring lots of water. If you start from the lodge make sure to account for a lot of incline on the way back.
