A beautiful scenic trail, but VERY rocky. Definitely a good place to work on riding through short rocky climbs and switchbacks, but not great if you’re looking for leisure - if that’s your goal, hike it instead.

Had to cut it super short because of an off leash Irish Setter. Took forever to get back because of all the stopping and pulling off trail we had to do to avoid getting attacked by off leash dogs. There’s no monitoring of these trails even though they’re very popular and every single time there’s at least one dog that will come running up the trail a full five minutes before it’s owner. We’ve been attacked multiple times here. The trails themselves are mediocre. Short but not bad. But in no way worth the danger.

Great trail. Lots of ups and downs, but somehow it seems there’s more ups. We went down the power line right-of-way, DON’T! When you get to the bottom of steeeeep decent the trail is closed. That was the only part of our walk that was not enjoyable. I can’t wait to go back when we’ve had some rain and the little streams are running, it’ll be spectacular. Grey Fox was the last trail my wife and I had left to hike in the park. We saved the best for last. Absolutely beautiful! Six stars out of five.

Great hike. Saw many dear and even a fox. Many options to change up the route. Mostly shaded but some exposed area that were quite hot. We started in lower purgatory and went to upper purgatory where we were able to use the restroom halfway through the hike which was convenient.

This was a nice hike with some beautiful views. There were several small streams that were dry but will be very pretty when they’re running after some rains. This trail seems to be a favorite for people riding bicycles because we saw several, all were courteous and we shared the trails easily. All-in-all, a great way to start or end the day.

A great place to sit and be in tune with the rest of nature. Sunrise Lookout has a great view of rolling hills and wooded ridges that is best experienced with the sunrise, as expected. If you’re in San Marcos, it really is a great place in town to get away

clearly marked trails. great for a short scenic hike.

Nice, shaded trail with some elevation. look out for mountain bikes!

Great easy trail, a good trail to get started with.

Nice hike. This trail had a little bit of something for everyone. On the way out the trail was fairly primitive with nice switch backs and continuous elevation gain. On the way in it was like a nice wide downhill golf cart path. We lost count of deer, they were everywhere. It’s tricky to find the trail head. We parked in the first parking lot and there’s no indication of how to get to the trail. By trial (trail) and error and using our Alltrails app we figured out that you actually walk through the maintenance area. All in all it’s a nice hike once you find it.

I was destroyed by horse flies most of this trail. Maybe my fault but JESUS it was the worst.

Love this trail. It’s so quiet when you get about about 2 miles in. I’ve seen a coral snake there on two occasions now!

Fun trail, pretty reclusive, wildlife around. Not the most maintained, but that adds to the charm.

I would highly recommend this trail to everyone. The trail is mostly wooded and rocky but has some long sunny treks within it. Also has some great view areas that are great for pictures and memories!

A great hike with beautiful views. Take the short Wickiup trail to a couple of picnic tables with spectacular views. GO!

This is the,”trail less traveled.” My wife and I only saw 3 other people the entire hike. The big pond with the deck and bench is beautiful (see photos) and there are a couple of overlooks with the best views of any trails in or around San Marcos. Some of the trail markings are a little confusing and at each place we had to make an educated guess about which way to go we chose wrong but with our Alltrails app we got back on track quickly. If you take the short,” Wickiup,” trail you’ll find a couple of picnic tables with great views, I already have plans for them. We’ll be back there soon.

A nice trail almost anyone can enjoy.

Not good for running.

Probably my favorite place to train that is within 30 mins of my house. Great technical sections with good sweeping open single track so you can get some speed work in too. I suggest parking at the upper lot and doing and out and back throwing in some of the loop trail in for added flavor on the lower section.

One of my favorites for training runs. I like to combine it with the lower section of Dante and Beatrice thrown in for more elevation change and a longer loop. It can be really technical in some areas but is great training for longer runs.

A deer flew past us on the part of the trail that’s like a big meadow. Also, 4 baby raccoons were walking past us on the trial too. 5 out of 5 yo. Warning!! Super hard on your feet. Maybe don’t bring tennis.

“Rocky,” doesn’t even begin to describe parts of this hike. I would definitely recommend a walking stick or hiking pole and hiking boots. I’m sure people hike and run this trail daily in running shoes, but my wife and were both glad we had on boots. The trails are less well marked than in other parts of Purgatory and our AllTrails app really came in handy. It is a nice hike that I think would be beautiful in the fall. We’ll be back.
