On Saturday 12/01/2018 I visited Mud Creek Park in San Antonio and found it to be a beautiful wild land/urban interface life raft in the midst of an ocean or suburban sprawl. On a day when another nearby park with concrete and old blacktop hiking trails was full of suburbanites there were few in Mud Creek. It has a completely different nomenclature for a completely different demographic. The trails though not great in distance are completely suitable for hiking, trail running and trail biking. Distance can be built by covering some of the ground more than once. Some are in the open and some are in woods with twists and turns, rocks (both fixed and loose) and roots. I have uploaded two pics of open area trail, two of wooded area trail, and two of local wildlife. If you live in or if you visit San Antonio this small park is worth seeking out.

Very rocky

Surprisingly decent intensity. Very quiet and nice for a solid hike near San Antonio when you may not have a lot of time for a long one.

Good trail today. Some small areas that are wet but easy to get around. Did Blue to Mud creek loop to red

Did a little loop around the base with my son, I plan to go back and do the whole thing soon.

Most of the back country trails were closed, so we opted for this nice walking trail. it would perfect for a trail run or just for a evening stroll. there isn't anything super spectacular about it, but it is pretty and I saw tons of butterflies. Trail is flat with only a few rocks here and there.

Great trail in the city. A perfect escape for the morning or afternoon. Great for young kids too (5-10). They will be challenged but can definitely do it. Saw many people trail running - can’t wait to do it myself. Bring water as there is none on the trail.

Trail is nice for novice riders, however need to get started early to avoid the heat. Very scenic in the spring season. Best during fall and winter season.

Great trail in the city. Even though you can see houses from nearby communities it is a perfect urban escape for the morning or afternoon. Great for young kids too (5-10). They will be challenged but can definitely do it. Saw many people trail running - can’t wait to do it myself. Bring water as there is none on the trail.

Gradual incline to the tower. Spend lot of time running the trails. Great place to get steady workout.

Pets allowed?

This trail offers it all! From rivers to forests to deserts to steep hills to historic/haunted sites! The farther you go into the trail, the more peaceful & shaded. There is lots of natural life to see such as flowers, armadillos, & snakes. It's perfect for walkers, hikers, bikers, etc.

I recommend parking on the Highway 16 side & heading west towards Applewhite Rd.

I used to live right down the road & now I'm in Florida & miss this trail so much.

First time in Government Canyon Park. Due to the current heavy rain, most of the park was barracaded and not accessible. ..but I did get to hike about 5 miles (including the Discovery Trail) today. Very nice, easy hike. Proper footwear is essential -very rocky terrain. I'm looking forward to hiking every trail in this park! Quite impressed so far. ..will be posting as I go. ..

Love this trail! Friedrich is my favorite park in the area and I hike, walk the trails regularly. This trail combo has some challenging areas, but in my opinion is suitable for most fitness levels. The scenery is awesome- the trail is clearly marked and well maintained. Would certainly recommend!

Love this trail. There are paved options as well as natural sections of the trail. Trail is clearly marked, well kept and great for most fitness levels (in my opinion). More traffic on weekends, but I've never considered it excessive ; I hike Eisenhower Park regularly. Would certainly recommend!

Paved trail with a little bit of a hill. The beginning has some good shade, but the second half of the trail gets a lot of sun- it can get pretty hot in the summer months. Good for walking, trail running, biking, or just enjoying nature. Wildflowers and cactus flowers bloom in the Spring, giving some pretty things to look at.

starts flat mostly dirt but soon turns into a rocky and interesting ascend. would strongly recommend that you were Trail runners and if you have weak ankles or knees definitely hiking boots. The Descent along the back of the trail is moderate. if the rocks are damp they tend to be slippery and most of the hike is a rocky terrain with loose gravel. hiking poles would be recommended for the Ascend and descend part of the trail. the trail is moderately traveled and expect a good workout.

I have yet to discover anything that comes close to this park for trail running. it has paved and unpaved options. short and long routes. I love it. it receives a decent amount of visitors - enough to make me feel safe but never so much that it feels crowded. parking overflows out of the lot. minor inconvenience. simply my favorite.

Amazing trail for walking or running!

I’m surprised such a trail is within San Antonio. It’s not color coded for those who rely on it. Still very easy to navigate through. Slippery when wet!!! Trail on!!

Nice view of the river. One of San Antonio’s best spots.

Lots of trails to choose from. Huge park.

Was able to see some interesting birds.

Nice trail. Had a decent view of the city.

Nice trail. Was able to see some deer while hiking.

Nice trails located in N.E. San Antonio.

It's different from what I usually do but it was a nice educational experience. I think it's best for people who wants to learn more about gardening or kids who have interest in plants. I enjoyed my time reading with the sound of birds and the dancing trees though. Overall it was really nice.

Great trails close to San Antonio! I was surprised at how tucked away this feels. Great tree cover, plenty of hills, beautiful views! It felt like I was farther out in the Hill Country instead of so close to the city. Loved it!

Great trail even when a little damp, elevations on connecting trails will leave you in a pool of sweat!!
