One of the easier trails at HF.. Step drop offs but stock Jeep can do easy, sliders are a plus for any off road trip.

a good long trail with many scenic vistas... can be done in most vehicles with a little careful driving. we did it in a Jeep but never broke a sweat! just a note... anywhere you see a tree along this route there is water!

easy trail for a stock wrangler. nice views of el capitan and a little blue house at the end. saw a mountain lion too. just watch out for the brush scratching your paint

Starts with a six mile drive down a dirt road to get to the trail head. The road is an improved road, which means no 4x4 is necessary but can be bumpy due to the washboards. The hike itself is easy for the first 3/4 of a mile, but the last bit requires a little bit of a climb. There are markers that guide you once you get into the rocks and the foot traffic is evident enough that you can see where to go. The 360 view at the top is pretty cool and the balancing rock is cool to see. Although, I thought the rock was gonna be bigger than it actually was. Overall, a fun easy hike if you are in a time crunch like we were.

Pine Canyon Trail head is at the end of a 6 mile primitive road. The park recommends 4X4 drive, however we made the trek in Desmond out Honda CRV without noticeable damage. The trial is a easy-moderate 4 mile in and out. The first 1.6 miles are in the sun. Beware of flies, their presence is overwhelming at times. This is where you encounter first of many ecosystems. Next the trail come to a moderately wooded area, and slowly becomes more dense. This is where we encountered two black bear cubs, and momma bear. We never made it to the waterfall due to the presence of the bears. Despite the bears, the changing of ecosystems were exhilarating. Great hike!

Easy hike, only a little climb towards the end to get to the balanced rock, but nothing difficult!

The road is graded gravel & we saw 3 cars coming out of it, so we took a chance. Besides some birds, we saw no other wildlife. Just the cacti. It was interesting to be among the cacti & be a part of the desert (if you can do that in a car).
After about 5 miles the road got really bad - huge washouts & potholes. A car pulling an RPOD passed us going out. We think they were actually camping back there! The campgrounds were full the night before.

My husband's favorite hike. Easy mile in, then rough rocky incline to the balanced rock (about .2). Great views. The road getting there is challenging. Lots of ruts & washouts. Take you time & above all, don't try traveling the posted speed (25mph).

Phenomenal drive, simply beautiful!
2014 F-150 Supercab 4x4 Ecoboost. Michelin LTX 275/65R18 tires. Some interesting climbs and tight cutbacks. I had to activate the e-locker a couple times. My wife got a bit bruised in some of the rough spots.

Took my 4WD 2009 Nissan Pathfinder with Kumho A/T tires and had a great time. Lots of fairly deep sand and plenty of puddles that can get fairly deep, so be careful! Not too busy on a Sunday afternoon a day after some rain.

Bumpy, but great shortcut to Santa Elena. Nice sighting of a primitive structure along the way.

The road was a lot of fun to drive in the Jeep, and the views comprised of vast expanses of desert. Really cool.

Hot/exposed at first but leads into a wooded area with lots of shade!

Easy drive saw a tour bus taking it with no problem.

A wonderful family hike to Balanced Rock. Kids between ages 4-10 all successfully completed the hike. The gravel road to the trailhead was a little rough the last few miles. Big family fun!!!

This was a fun hike for the kids. Lots of big rocks to climb over. Started to get a little warm in the afternoon sun but that is to be expected

My family loved this hike! The climb up to balanced rock was a highlight for them.

Such a blast. Easier than I expected for me and my stock Jeep Wrangler. Very scenic, beautiful trail. Only a couple of spots where actual 4wd was necessary. Look for the spot with the old grave sites on the hill! No signs but looks very historic. Overall, my favorite off-road trail at big bend.

Great scenery during the drive. Didn't stop at any sites on the way, but did stop for some amazing photos. Would definitely do again if I had more time.
