Perfect quick hike! I started late in the day, 3:30 and was concerned I wouldn’t finish before dark, but it only took 1hr 20min. There were a few switchbacks in the beginning but the rest was easy. VERY LOOSE ROCKS wear good shoes and very windy, bring layers. A Doe and her Buck wandered by a mere 25 feet from me along with several small critters. HIGHLY recommend this trail for new hikers as well as moderate hikers and would be great for kids. There are several lookout spots with benches. The park is open til 10 but they also have camping spots for those that want to stay the night or several days.

Holy hell this should be called bouldering, not hiking. Wtf, who put kid friendly?! LoL Guess I should’ve looked at the difficulty level instead of the distance. I thought this was going to be my warm up. LoL. It goes straight up. I mean you could probably find easier routes but this app takes you straight up. Wow, Apparently I’m outta shape! LOL

This was the very first trail I have hiked and completed. For those who are pretty much starting from the couch, like me, this was a good trail to start with. It is pretty rocky and a bit narrow. I used trekking poles and that was very helpful.

Loved this trail. Good distance/elevation for intermediate hiking. I saw children, elders and dogs along the way, great for everyone!

Beautiful hike right in our back door!

Recommended. Peaceful and quite with no traffic noise, and great views. The loop is actually closer to 3 miles in total. I also enjoyed walking through the Indian Lodge on the way back, after coming up from the road (the last 5 minutes of the hike will take you along the park road, which is no issue at all). It’s a rocky trail so wear good shoes. Great loop hike!

Unrivaled view from the highest peak in the Davis Mountains. Fortunately the weather was perfect with 360 degree views with over 100 miles visibility. No wind, 60 degrees and clear skies! Guadalupe Mountains to the Northwest and Big Bend Mountains to the Southeast clearly visible on the horizon.

We (my wife, my dog and myself) completed the entire Sheep Pen Canyon Loop Trail, in addition to the Limpia Creek Trail and the Vista Trail. While this exercise featured a significant vertical displacement, the gradients were generally gentle. There were a few rocky spots, with loose rocks in the golf-ball- to baseball-sized-rock range. It was long, but beautiful.

This trail is not an official trail and is not supported, maintained or encouraged by the property owner. Likely it is a game trail that someone traveled without permission. As experienced hikers know, using a trail that is not on a map is risky. If you get lost or injured the likelihood of someone finding you is very very low. A mountain lion on the other hand is much more likely to find you here. Cross this off of your to-do list.

Parking is locked at Gate, need to go a mile or two up the road to get a permit, at Fort Davis State Park. $6, not too bad. Bring sunscreen. Vista view is worth the total 9 mile hike.

Great day great trail.

An excellent hike. Steep for the first bit but tops out on a grand view of the surrounding area. Walked up on a lazy whitetail near the top. Little to no cover and random showers are a thing, so check the wx prior to leaving.

Left at 6 am (full moon) taking the old cc trail to the top for the sunrise. What a sight. Then took Skyline trail back after some snacks. made several stops on way back just to enjoy the views. Great trails.

Took this trail twice, once just at daybreak and again at sunset. Easy trail and fantastic views for miles. Can see McDonalds Observatory from the trail.

Beautiful trail but paired w Montezuma Quail it’s only 3 miles, not close to 5. I wanted to run but it’s too technical in spots for that.

Nice trail that is not too strenuous. The first part from the Indian Lodge will be vertical but after no more than a mile you’ll be at the top and will second back down by the campgrounds. It gives you a great view of the Lodge and also of the Davis mountain range. A recommended hike!

great trail

Make sure you check out the greenhouses! Lots of cool cacti and desert plants.
