great trail. It was well maintained. We had the trail to ourselves today. I would definitely come back and hike a longer version of this in the future. Hey campsite at Alley Ford was sweet.

North is longer and gradual. South is shorter, more steep and rockier. Fun hike.

Moderate incline going to the tower. it is a beautiful trail. The trip back down is brutal on knees, ankles and feet. It is very rocky.

Did this trail on Sept 27th. Good climb to start the day. Went up old Mac North then up to the tower back down the spice wood and did the Judge branch loop. As we went up it got foggy. By the time we made it to the tower you couldn’t see 10 feet ahead. This was the high side of moderate clocked in at 11.3 miles and 2625 elevation climb. We’ll do it again.

HikingGreat!

Awesome hike, awesome view from the observation tower at the top. Be aware that the NORTH trail is moderate. The SOUTH Old Mac trail is rated Hard. So if you want to do the whole loop, consider going up the north trail and then come back down the south trail (alternatively, you can just go back the way you came down the north trail again and it's still 8 miles total). The parking lot has excellent facilities including bathrooms, shower, bear-proof trashcans, picnic area, etc. Much of the hike is fairly narrow, so be aware that it is difficult to avoid people when passing each other. Steady elevation gain the whole way. On your way up the north trail, when you get just over halfway to the tower, take a left at the Old Mac Camp Site and check it out. It's marked by a sign, and it's quite a beautiful spot. Then return to the trail and go see the observation tower at the top. Killer view of the town in the distance. Head back down and follow the signs to the south trail to complete the loop. The south trail is even more narrow, steep, and craggy, with lots of roots and rocks, so it's much easier when going downhill. It's really cool though - huge, mossy boulders and rock formations everywhere. Keep a lookout for wild ginger growing all along the way. This hike took us just under 5 hours with breaks and snack time at the top. It was strenuous, but absolutely awesome.

Great trails, rocky terrain with exposed roots in areas. See Debord and Emory Gap Falls from this route. A go-to hike when visiting Frozen Head SP/NA.

It was a pretty easy trail with a steady incline to Emory Gap Falls. Unfortunately, with the lack of rain the Emory and Burdord Falls were no more than just a trickle.

BackpackingGreat!Scramble

Wow!!! So much elevation gain!!! We started our amazing adventure on Chimney Top Trail near visitor station to Firetower...tough. Did a quick loop and checked out the overlook on the campsite of North Old Mac Trail. We continued north on West Lookout Tower up to Squire Knob campsite. This campsite was so nice, it had a bear proof box for belongings/food and had an awesome fire pit with awesome rock chairs! There was a small spring in the area as well. After caming a pretty quiet night there, we continued to North Bird Mountain, then Bird Mountain.....lots of incline, tons of switchbacks, then brutal on the toes trek all the way down the ridge and finishing up on the road back to visitor station. We packed sleeping bags, food, and supplies into our back packs which weighed about 25+ lbs. Within a few miles up into the mountains, you feel it!!! So worth all the pain!!! One of the best hiking adventures ever, and my first backpacking trip!!! Beautiful scenery, no wildlife sightings, great campsites, well marked, overall great park!!! A few down trees on North Bird. Highly recommend!

Hard. Really hard. Same elevation change as the Quest for the Crest 50k, in case anyone was wondering. It’s a lot. So much.
