Absolutely stunning view of the falls at the end! Lots of river views, two bridge crossings. Very rocky trail with lots of opportunities to stumble. My Fall Count: 0 — my Trip Count: well-north of 25. Granted I was never voted most graceful, but trust me, you’ll either want to be sure-footed on this hike, wear hiking boots with good ankle support, or preferably both. The hike starts out easy and becomes increasingly challenging, finishing off with a steep section of trail and rock climb to get to the falls. So fun and worth every step!! I passed a family carrying a 3-ish year old child - not sure how the man did it, it was a challenging hike just carrying myself. Plus, with my Trip Count the poor youngin’ would’ve likely spent more time flying through the air than in my arms. Several swimming/wading spots on the way. I would say this is heavily trafficked - I saw no less than 10 groups of two or more on the hike to the falls. Saw no one on the way back because I rolled in 15 minutes past dusk. I would definitely recommend adding this one to your list.

Phone died once we got to the Falls. Absolutely beautiful hike filled with hidden views, well maintained trial, great rapids and one of the best waterfalls of the area. Highly recommended during the Fall for plenty of leaves and cooler temps.

Been to the falls via the shorter hike and really enjoyed this trail a lot more because you are by water almost the whole time! Love the ascent to the ridge, and the wild rocks by the river. Nice hike! Will come back in the summer to swim. Saw some nice waterholes along the way!

Beautiful falls and a nice trail to stretch your legs. We visited on a Friday morning and got the last spot in the parking lot, although we only passed three or four small groups on the trail. Overall, the ratio of distance to views is good. We were happy!

Great trail if you’re looking for some exercise. Took us a little over an hour to get to the waterfall and about 50 minutes to walk back. Try to follow the trail map if you can because the markers can be confusing. Started off blue markers that we lost and then all of a sudden we were following white markers. A little steep and uneven in some places- not somewhere I’d want to bring my dogs or kids. The waterfall is definitely worth the hike, but the hike isn’t for the faint of heart

hiked with my dog "Roan" yesterday .. great hike ..

Did this out-and-back on a Saturday and completed it between four and five hours. No bear sightings despite the numberous warnings. We made plenty of sound as we walked which is always a good precaution. Plenty of water sources if you have a filter. Fairly level terrain with few switchbacks. Took a dip in the lake when we reached the dam, too.

Nice hike along shore of Watauga Lake and fun to cross over the top of Watauga Dam. Makes you really appreciate the work that went into the construction of the TVA projects. Sad to see a lot of trash along the early part of trail and at the campsite by the lake. I picked up some broken glass ( beer bottles), but there’s lots more around:(.

Trail reroutes lengthen the mileage to 9.4

We love this beautiful trail however, be cautious of snakes. A copperhead bit our dog there two days ago. We did a backcountry rescue by carrying her part way out from 2 miles in. She’s doing great because I gave her a Benadryl and rushed her to the emergency vet in Blountville. She spent 24+ hours in the ER and received anti-venom and other treatments.

Awesome reward at the end of this trail. You’ve gotta be comfortable on your feet. Kids and parents walking the trail as well. A good one for sure! Lots of shade.

Good hike to get your blood flowing! Can't wait to come back in the Fall or later to see the views!

It’s a good hike. It’s not too difficult but you still get a little exercise. There are some really pretty views too. The water is cold, so if you want to swim, go on a hot day. The waterfall is really pretty.

A small handful of chanterelles & leather milk caps. Possibly due to end of season.

It did wash out on me. However, saw Indian ghost flowers which if not proof of fairies- well it's darn sure magic. More shrooms on a stroll than some see in a lifetime.

I was on a south bound section hike on the AT to TN 19E. So I could not avoid this section of trail. It was a great section a cross the Watauga Lake Dam and around some of the coves. We sometimes walked close to the water and there were a lot of berry bushes. We did see some bear paw prints.

I did this section in two days. I stayed at Moreland Gap Shelter. Was traveling with “Postman”. It was warm and strenuous. I must have sweated 10 liters of water. But I had plenty of places to get and filter water. The views were spectacular. The trail was well maintained. Saw quite a bit of bear scat.

Wonderful trail. Nicely kept with only a few muddy spots. At the beginning there was an active hornet's next, but a detour has been made! Just follow the signs and you will be fine.

Great trail with good views of “doe” river. Some elevation gain while on the AT. Watch your blue blazes and utilize the app. Good parking lot access off of 321.
