What a beautiful day!! I came in from Boone area. GPS was spot on. I parked to the right of the service gate. Not sure if it was private or not, but it looked to be well used. As many ave stated, this is very steep. Its a washed out gully, but that's not a bad thing. Careful footing and had no problems. The river was at full kilt... Not the photo op I was hoping for, but a good hike. I'll will be back when the river is down to normal. Not as bad as I expected from reviews. I took my time coming out with no problems. Big mud hole about 100 yards from the trail head. All wheel or 4 wheel advised.

This is a checkout hike for doing AT maintenance needs. All blowdowns will be step overs at the worst on the NOBO trip back.

This was a great trail with a beautiful waterfall reward at the end. The first bit is Very steep but my 6 and 9 year old who hike often were able to do it with a little help. Wish the weather was warmer when we did it because there is great swimming at the fall.

I just had surgery on my wrist from falling yesterday. I am an experienced hiker, but as we all know things happen. It was raining and I made it all the way down to the falls, but with the combination of my poncho and the slime on the rocks, I fell and I reached out with my dominant hand and I broke Both bones in my wrist and it was in little pieces. However, I don’t won’t to discourage people from not doing it. It is a hard trail so it is for the experienced hiker. I wouldn’t wear a poncho or go when it’s raining. Hiking shoes are a must. Waterfall is gorgeous. It is a fun hike as long as you don’t fall and break your wrist. ;)

Awesome hike and gorgeous waterfall at the end. Great area for camping at the base and a trail to the top of the falls for a refreshing jump. Would definitely recommend!

Its a short trip, but well worth it. Didn't think the hike down was as intense as everyone made it sound. It is steep, but if you have good shoes or boots, it's no problem. If you end up walking in the water, have good should since slim is on many of the rocks.

it's a fun trip and here is a video of our trip if you like to see how worth it it is.

A steep decent and a rigorous climb up but well worth it. Amazing waterfalls, a whole lot of fun.

This hike is very steep. Like when I read it was steep it doesn’t compare. I had Bambi legs the whole time. It is awesome at the falls and jumping off is exhilarating. But jump at your own risk!! I would do it again, but not anytime soon.

Can be a bit of a treacherous descent and a hard climb out, but well worth the effort.

One of the shortest, but most difficult hikes we've taken. Straight up and down, but the falls and swimming hole were worth every step!

About half way down you will question whether or not it’s worth it. It is.

Make sure you screenshot or have a hard copy of directions to get there as there is no cell service most of the way. The trail is very steep and can be done in chocos but I would not recommend it. It is beautiful once you get to the bottom and definitely a challenge but very fun.

hard going down and up but when you get down and to the falls it's worth it

also watch the drive going up to the parking, lots of deep holes. we bottomed out our Chevy Cruze

Hard going down, but worth it all! You can even jump off the first waterfall!

This is a pretty extensive hike. It should actually be placed in the hard column. Especially if you start on the Watauga Dam side. If you do this point to point start on the Hwy 91 side. Did see a bear and a cub so beware.

The falls are beautiful, the hike down is as rough as people say it is. Wear good shoes and bring some shoes to swim in!

Short but very hard. Great swimming area at the falls.

Trail quite washed out, parking, too. Once you get down, it is nice—just not sure it is worth the struggle.

Very short, but a difficult hike. Definitely not a trail for anyone that has problems with very steep hillsides. Wear good shoes and enjoy the beauty!

I've heard about compressions for years but finally made it out. The waterfall seems a lot bigger in person than in pictures. The hike itself is pretty brutal on the way back up but it's short. Nice swimming holes and places to hangout. Totally worth it

This trail was as hard as the review say. After hiking this, I was completely stiff and sore the next day due to how steep, it was almost like rock climbing. Other than that, completely worth it! Absolutely beautiful hike and waterfall.

The hike was fun but my friends and I brushed against a plant called Giant Hogweed. I did a ton of research because I got 3rd degree burns from this plant across my half of my shin. I would advise to AVOID this trail or be extremely careful. Someone needs to go out there and take care of this plant. I'm scarred to this day and still sensitive when I put my socks on. The pain was unbearable, stuck indoors for 2 weeks straight. Blisters the size of a baseball on my leg. And this location is the only place in the area that this stuff has been reported. I would have reported it but I don't know where I brushed against the plant. All I know is that I was hiking on this trail with my friends and I noticed weird burns on my legs later that night. Two days later my leg was covered in tiny EXTREMELY painful blisters. By day 6 my entire leg was purple and blue and swollen I had no idea what had happened and I had to visit 6 different doctors. It was 14 days before I came outside for the first time. Took 3 months to get rid of the blisters. I am scared and sensitive to this day. PLEASE AVOID THIS TRAIL!!!!!!!!!!

I hiked this in under 6.5 hrs. Great views. It's a good day hike for an experienced hiker or broken into two days for individuals wanting to take it easy.

this hike should be labeled as hard. it so steep coming down and going back up. it's not marked very well at all. a resident had to put a sign in their own yard to show people which way to go towards the falls. the only reason I'm giving this trail a 4 is because of the waterfall
