This trail was an incredible trail that should be a must-do for everyone that have never been to the Badlands and only have one day to get the most out of it. It provides a nice flat trail through the grasses (beware of rattlesnakes) and leads up to the ladder. It’s easy going up but can be difficult descending. It gets strenuous right around there having you traverse around a very steep cliff into a canyon. But after that, the valley opens up and your in another world full of endless discoveries and a grand view to make a cherry on top of a great cake.

There were 8 of us and we loved the trail. Temp was 90+ but no shade.Bring plenty of water. The ladder was real interesting going down. Found out my 25 year old son is afraid of ladders. It freaked him out. Enjoy!

do the full trail. and loop up on the medicine trail to see more grass land

Great hike with a gorgeous view at the end. Follow the metal posts with white paint tips - took us a bit of time to figure out that was the trail marker. The ladder wasn’t bad, going down was a little trickier. Take water! It doesn’t seem like a very long hike, but each of us almost went through our 2Ls we had on our backs. It was close to 100degrees with no shade along the way. Enjoy!

Great view at the end of the trail. Be prepared for a pause in the trail when you get to the wooden ladder. Takes a while to wait for people to go up and down. We just found a route around it but I wouldn’t recommend doing that.

This is definitely one to do in the Badlands! We loved it! Got to see everything! Not too many people if you’re there on a weekday. The first bit is very very steep, and if you’re with someone who struggles with climbs this may not be the one for you.

First the ladder isn’t as bad as it looks. The only problem I had was going down... short legs make it harder to reach and for some reason it freaked me out and I’m nowhere near afraid of heights or anything really. I will say to explore at the top past the markers! The views were amazing, and it would have been even better if there was significant water, I’ll have to plan my next trip to SD better.

Went the day after heavy rains and the trail was flooded but was a pretty flat and easy 4 miles. The puddles jumping definitely made it a bit more moderate lol

Yes this trail is very short but the views are very nice and it’s friendly to all ages and skill levels. My son and even seen 3 big horn sheep from not too far hiking this trail.

Trail was fun and wasn’t too hard. The ladder isn’t for the faint of heart BUT isn’t as bad as it looks. The view is very nice when you get to top of ladder, but not a totally good view for sunset photos. You can follow a rough trail along the top which I heard leads to a better view but we didn’t feel confident to take that.
We saw families with kids as young as 4 or 5 climbing the ladder so if your kids like to explore,Like to climb and are not afraid of heights it might be a good trail for the whole family. Just need to be careful of loose gravel when you get to the top of ladder and keep small children within reach.

Great short hike to do in Badlands! Very easy with a set of man made stairs/ladder that could be rated moderate if you are scared of heights. They views are amazing and the trail is marked fairly often and easy to follow.

This is a great hike. Don't let the ladder intimidate you. We noticed numerous hikers simply turn around once they saw the ladder. if you do, you'll miss out on a great view. Some boulders to scramble. The trails is well marked, black posts as you go along. Pay attention to the signage if you have kids with you, they can fall in a few areas. As you get to the notch be prepared for the wind, it really comes through there. You'll be looking down on the Badlands and it's very pretty. Our five year old was able to handle the ladder, just took a little time with him. Hope you enjoy it!

Very straight forward trail that is short and sweet. Boardwalk that leads to a nice overlook of the Badlands area. No elevation change and a place to sit down at the overlook. Good for all ages. Grea view at the overlook. From this parking area you can access the Door, Window, Castle and Notch trails. If you are looking for a challenging trail this is not it. Simple walk out and back to an overlook.

Trail starts out as a boardwalk, but then you come to a set of stairs and before you know it you're walking out into the Badlands themselves. There are numbered yellow posts to follow out into the area and the end of the trail is marked with a sign. Beautiful trail if you like the Badlands setting. Our 5 year old was with us and he loved this trail. Many people stop their trek at the stairs so if you continue you'll find the crowd disappears as you move out into the Badlands. Just watch your step as you walk out into the Badlands and you'll be fine on this one. Fun for all ages.

Fun trail little trail, probable got through it in about an hour. Little crowded today, but once we got out on the trail it wasn't bad. Saw two big horn sheep, that made it worth it.

This is an interesting and beautiful hike. The terrain is not particularly challenging but the intense sunshine, heat and winds adds to it’s difficulty. Being plenty of water. Expect to lose sight of the markers and become disoriented. When that occurs, I recommend going back to the last maker and scan the horizon for then next one and all will be fine. This trial offers exceptional views of the rock formations, wildlife and prairie vegetation.

Super short and simple. Quick boardwalk to an interesting canyon view. Anyone can do this and it doesn't take much time.

This trail is like a metaphor for life. Mostly you just walk along, but occasionally the magical and unexpected appears just around the corner. It's worth it.

Very easy trail on the boardwalk. The magic is in what comes after you leave the boardwalk - free exploration in, on, and among the Badlands formations! It's a kid's and climber's dream!

Pleasant, easy walk to say the least. It was 75 and sunny when I went, day after rain so wear waterproof hikers because the path can sometimes get flooded/muddy. Varied terrain, heard many rattlesnakes so stay on the path! Beautiful vista of both the rock formations and plains.

Took Saddle Pass to Medicine Root to this trail to return, doing a loop. Brings you up close to rock structures and canyons, at points slightly difficult to find markers but a truly enjoyable experience.

Flat and easy trail, but the heat and thunderstorm previous night made it difficult. Wonderful way to experience the Badlands.

It was pretty. We got beat up pretty good with heavy rains and heavy winds. We didn’t make it the entire trail. Camped one night and headed out

Short hike along a wash (theoretically there is a waterfall...but there’s gotta be a lot more water...and we are here 12 hours after a huge storm) and up a log ladder to a cliff. Nice views, interesting rocks. Ladder is fairly steep and rocky terrain makes this not an easy trail.

A little slippery with the mist/rain, but that made it more fun in my opinion. Only ended up doing about a mile out and a mile back due to time constraints, but would go back and do the whole thing! Great views and amazing landscape everywhere you look.

Can be a little slippery when raining or misty, but great views of the canyons and formations. Easy to find your way from blaze to blaze, but gives you the freedom to roam and view what you want!
