Awesome trail at a campground, 5 miles, takes you on a nice walk through the forest.

Perfect hike for the first day of fall at Newton Hills. The trails are well kept. Considering how much rain came down just a few days before there was only a couple muddy spots. So that was nice.
The trail heads could be a little better marked. Especially if people haven’t been there before. We were glad we had the All Trails App so we were more sure of where we were at.

Not what I expected. At first, well marked, than nothing. Trail would be good for 4 wheeling, not much else. Pretty much good for cow grazing. Small herds, 5 to 10 cows everywhere. Also cow pies all over. I am not experienced hiker, but would not recommend.

very enjoyable. lots of shade, challenges and scenery.

Very enjoyable and a good workout r/t incline/declines. I did the Woodland Trail which was well-marked with “you are here” guidance at frequent intervals.
Blue Diamond trail was a bit confusing. Was very glad I picked up a map at the park office. Overall. a good woodland experience on wide, clear trails.

This trail has amazing scenery, from around the lake, up on the ridge, and down in the valley. Only problem was we kept finding ourselves losing the trail due to all the switchbacks and poorly marked trails. It ended up being a 16 mile hike in approx 7-8 hours. We started out in coon hollow going towards the flume trail head.

Would be better if marked better

I went with a group of children as a camp leader. It was fun and easy, but extremely muddy, so be prepared!

We walked and rode bikes on this trail and we were amazed at the diversity in this reserve. The wild flowers at the beginning set the tone and the river walk was a perfect stroll through the flatlands of the area. Lots of deer and wild turkeys but sadly, the bison have been temporarily moved to greener pastures.

Loved the trail; however we were unprepared to cross 4 bridges over rushing water. Good thing we could sit and scoot across! Also easy to get lost due to no signage to guide you. Hard to know which way to go!

Paved hiking/bicycle path. Extremely easy. Parts were flooded. BUG SPRAY lots of mosquitos, prob due to so much standing water.

Fun trail with a lot of great views. A small section is aggressively uphill and wear you out if not prepared. The nature sounds are always present and views are spectacular for eastern South Dakota.

Fun little trail!

more of a moderate loop network of wide dirt/grass trails thru pasture and tall pine stands. good for the novice as footing is good and climbs aren't that steep. loops allow you to add on muiles if you want ant trailhead just about 8 miles from Spearfish.

Great trail! Amazing views. I have hiked several trails and this one ranks up there as a must see. 6yr old and Cockapoo dog had no problems.

A lot of fallen trees that block the trail. You can climb over them but these just make it more challenging. Beautiful scenery but no wildlife today

Snow depth was amazing. NOAA stated 40"-50", I would say closer to 30"! Still a beautiful and moderately strenuous snowshoe adventure. My nephew tagged along, but doesn't own snowshoes and struggled the entire time. Plenty of great looping/crossing trails that are reasonably marked but as a first time visitor to the area, they come up a bit short. Found myself relying heavily on GPS. I suspect these trails to be much more easy to navigate without snow cover but then we wouldn't be snowshoeing. Due to the low number of reviews/photos, I did not have a high expectation for the area. However, it exceeded my expectations in accessibility and beauty. I would definitely snowshoe or hike this area again.

Very cool! Multiple trails that loop together. Very well marked and maps at most major intersections. Excellent snowshoe and cross country trails in winter.

This is FAR from "Aggressive"!
I love this trail for exercising my dog, and myself, as well as early morning (sunrise) photography, but this is FAR from "Aggressive" (Maybe for YOUNG children I guess)

Amazing hike and great views!! Highly recommended!!
