Running

It was nice to run in the shade. The trail is paved and flat. There are some wooden bridges, which can be slick with the dew. Once the trail opened up to the road it was tricky to find the continuation, but we managed to see the leaning white sign. Even though it says it’s a left, just follow the bend of the road and then take a right turn onto 22-358, and right onto N Boyle Dr.

HikingBugsNo shade

This trail is perfectly suited for biking or running. For hiking/nature, not so much. It's completely paved (hard on the feet) and for the most part follows manmade structures--power lines, ditches, subdivision boundaries, etc. There is little to no shade on the trail. This is not a casual, quiet forest walk. You might see some deer if you go at the right time of the day, but that's about as exciting as it gets. Also if you have the proper state permits you can fossil-hunt for shark teeth and other marine fossils in the creek. (Make sure you get the permit first. Penalties for unauthorized fossil-hunting are severe from what I understand.)

Great paved (mostly asphalt) trail for laid-back riding or walking. Mostly in the shade. Too many "cyclists" that should be out on the roads lately. I'm a cyclist, and simply can't understand why anyone with a serious road bike, full spandex, and clipless pedals would be so rude as to ride on an otherwise family friendly trail. If you're a cyclist, wanting to get some safe miles in, go find a decent loop route, or hit up SCTAC Donaldson Center loop a few times, and quit buzzing by couples and families at 22+ mph. You're ready for the road at that point. Talk to the local bike shops and ask about good routes and group rides. Anyway, great asset for the upstate.

Random walk through the Market Commons area. Really felt like I was in an advertisement for living here. Went through the park, sports complex, lake and new residential homes. Highlight of the trip was the A10 in the Warbird memorial.

Lots of shade, some views of lake Marion and a nice place to divert halfway if you want to stop and have a snack at the pavillions overlookong the lake. also a bathroom there. bug spray probably a good idea. I went early morning and saw tons of spiders/spider webs.

Road biking

We biked over from downtown Charleston and I wouldn’t recommend it especially in the heat and over the Rt. 17 Bridge! When we found the Greenway trail it was very nice, shaded in a few spots with road crossings clearly marked. There is filtered water on the trail which is a plus! I would strongly caution you to use extreme care if you ride over the Rt. 17 bridge! Hopefully we can drive over next time and complete the whole Greenway!

Easy, some parts are not shaded and get very hot. Many paths to walk down to the river. Dog friendly.

If cycling on a road bike I’d skip this section and just do from the zoo to travelers rest. The conestee section is alright but then you go through a neighborhood that leads back to the SRT but it turns into rocks and 3 in sand. Had to unclip and walk along the median. Finally turned around. The upper half of this trail going up to travelers rest is really nice, flat, and paved. Just think this part isn’t finished/ready yet.

Nice shaded circle trail around Cherry Park. The pavement is very bumpy though because of the tree roots pushing the pavement up.

Walking

Heavily trafficked trail through Spartanburg, but people watching is half the fun here. Rental bikes are an option on one end. Lots of trail side improvements being made like exercise stops, and a dirt bike track, but most are not currently open due to COVID-19 measures. You can walk off trail to patronage some businesses, which is fun. Bench swings located about halfway through.
