It looks like the Joe Gmiter trail has not been maintained in over a decade. The trail is overgrown to the point that there is no defined trail over about 6 of the 8.2 miles, mostly on the south and east legs of the hike. Most of the time we were hiking in waist deep brush or ferns. You definitely want to wear long pants. We didn't and paid for it with pretty badly cut up legs. There were hundreds of downed, large trees across the trail, often so large and in such large groups that we had to hike several hundred feet off the trail to get around them. While the trail was pretty well marked, lack of a defined trail and the need to frequently hike off trail around downed trees often made it difficult to find the next blaze or trail mark orange and blue medallions. Beautiful forest but no views on this hike.

The hike includes several ups and downs, some fairly steep, but not particularly difficult. The bush whacking and need to hike around or climb over/through the many down trees is what makes this hike challenging.
