I love this easy , scenic trail. there is a patch of woods near the largest pond/propagation area with a few nice secluded camps, right inside the treeline, right off the trail. Lots of wildlife, especially birds. beaver, bears and coyotes are all present. the trail is littered with scat. Also watch the trail for snakes, I've stepped on or near many, it is a swamp. if spending the night, the summer is bad with biting insects, so take a net. The fishing is not too bad, mostly bluegill and some catfish. The water Is hard on filters, lots of iron.

This portion of the loop is adjacent to tons of more walking in the ANF.
Some pretty good bass and pan fish - fishing in the ponds- but off the trail it can get a bit marshy.

Flat and tight packed gravel for the majority of the trip.

Mostly out in the wide open so no reprieve from the sun on those summer days.

I haven't done it in the winter but books I have read says it can be very windy and snow can pile up on the trail.

Because of all of the water there can be quite a few flying insects and the deer flies were pretty bad both time I have been there.

Some opportunities for back country camping right on the trail as well.

great for beginners or a relaxing hike

This is a really enjoyable little loop trail. You circle the swamp area and have some really nice opportunities to see wildlife. We saw a ton of birds and evidence of beavers. The trail is relatively flat and not challenging. We return to this one about once a year and consider it a favorite.

Check out the Marienville ATV/Bike trail while in the area. The trail is not listed on this App but is a great ride! Trail head is a few miles (about 3) north of the ranger station on route 66. You can pick up a map at the ranger station. Watch out for ATV's. I recommend riding against the ATV traffic for safety sake. The trail has a nice mix of short climbs and downhill with a bit of technical ride due to rocks and roots.

Pretty easy ride on forest roads closed to motor vehicles. There are a couple options besides the loop and the road coming in can extend the ride. Would bet a sunset ride would be enhance the scenery through the swamp. Worth the drive to get here.
