Fun trail

Was hard, but we loved it. The vista made it worth the work. Took our 9 year old and he rocked it.

We did this trail on Saturday. The last time was about 3 years ago. They've done an amazing job building steps around the water cistern, where it used to be really slippery. There's also evidence of work in other places, including a reroute to include a switchback to replace a formerly steep section. I'm told this is the work of Tom Scully and his rock crew. Great job!!

A few caveats. Much of Col. Denning State Park is closed for renovations. The parking lot just across from the camp was closed, I think because camp is still in session. To park, you have to go into the park and go to the far north end to park. Then, you walk to the south end of the park and find either the lower blue blazed trail or the upper trail, both of which intersect with the trail to Flat Rock.

If you haven't done this hike lately, you should.

Hard trail as the incline is steep but a lot of fun! View is spectacular! I use to hike this in college with my roommates and team mates. We always enjoyed it!

Great challenging hike. Got there late and had to book it up to the outlook before sun down, which is NOT a good idea. Large incline in a small amount of distance. Take your time, plan accordingly. Only thing is was we got the lookout at around sundown and there was a timber rattlesnake den about 50 yards before the lookout on the trail. Saw about 6-7 in a span of 10 feet, which is what we could see. Lots of ledges, and downned logs for them. Those suns of guns were rattling at us and we couldnt even see them. Very nerve wracking to go back through that in the dark, but yet it made you feel so alive. Remember NEVER jump away from a rattlesnake. They have heat pits that can sense if there is 1/10th of a degree change to their surroundings. & they can only attack/lunge at you when they are coiled, be cautious and safe, or as my friend said before we headed back "Stay frosty"

This was my second hiking and yes it was tough being a newcomer. It's a steep hike of 3 mile with an awesome view in end. Then downhill was quick. Please take bug repellent. Overall very nice adventurous , good view, marked properly. Only go if you are fine with tough uphill hike. This is not a simple one unless you are one of my buddy who was running uphill 1500ft.

Very well marked now that you have a new start/end point. Rocky uphill climb but the views at the top are definitely worth it!

completed this trail twice, 2014 and 2015... been a while since I've been there and would love to go back soon! I recall it was a challenge and had great vistas.

haven't been here in a bit, they redirected the trail, a lot more switchbacks this way, so it makes it a bit easier, very well maintained and very well marked... bring water! awesome view, well worth the work to get there :)

Park has closed the amphitheater area & campground, along with their parking. Trail head is now in parking area above swimming lake. New connector to Rattlesnake Tr, which then connects to Flat Rock Tr .5mi above original parking lot. New route is well marked & in good shape.

great workout and view

Definitely a hard hike! Wear good protective footwear and bring hiking poles if you have them! One of the best hikes in Pennsylvania! Give yourself atleast 2.5hrs total. You gain 1400 ft in elevation. I would not bring a dog.

No lie, this is tough. I’m in shape and I was soaked and tired at the top. There were some down trees on the trail that we needed to climb over or go under. Also slightly overgrown but the view is worth it all. Best central PA vista

Fantastic view. A bit steep at parts but I wouldn’t consider it hard. Not your typical walk in the park though.

Great hike. The trail has been updated to offer a challenging or preferred path. With two kids (9 & 11), we went up challenging came down preferred in 2 hours and 10 minutes!

Great hike with a very rewarding view. Allocate 2-3 hours if you plan on spending time at the overlook. A little muddy in the spring, so wear good boots.

Took the challenge trail, and stopped at several points along the way up to catch my breath, but the view at Flat Rock is spectacular and well worth the effort! Took my dog with me, he's nearly 4 mos and he loved it too! Highly recommended by people and pets :)

A challenging but amazing trail. I haven't been here in a few years and they have updated it to include a choice in difficulty as you head up the mountain. Views are phenomenal.

Difficult hike in the beginning, had to rest a few times up the initial steep incline. The vista at the top was beautiful. We had lunch at the top and enjoyed the view before continuing on to Tuscarora trail, then Lehman trail, Warner trail to Cider path and then walking down the road past the lake to get to the parking lot. I highly recommended this trail!

One of the best vistas I have seen in PA. Deffinitly a hike to check out. Nice and vigorous up hill as well.

Hard uphill but amazing view at the end makes up for it

Amazing view of The Cumberland Valley on a clear day. Around mid June there is a large section of blooming mountain laurel mid way on the hike. It’s like walking through a pink cloud.

Trail was in good condition. It has some long strenuous stretches but well worth the view in the end. I will not do this trail in the summer as I hate snakes. But November is awesome.
