This trail was the most fun I’ve had hiking in a long time - being able to jump from rock to rock was fun, and it was definitely a great workout - surely a moderate trail. We took the river rock from the visitors center, then completed the entire 4 mile loop, ending with the orange loop (definitely worth the views). Make sure you wear hiking boots, or shoes with a good amount of ankle support AND a thick sole. A lot of hopping from rock to rock is involved here - and plenty of large boulder fields! So running shoes are a risky choice. Some areas were a little muddy or washed out, but the trail was mostly well marked, and pretty well maintained for being as strenuous as it was. I was also quite happy to see that one of the best views was accessible for most type of mobility aids - super cool! I hope to come back one day for the rock scrambling, as it was a positive experience all around (except for getting a little lost, but that was our fault for not paying attention, haha).

This our first time visiting hawk Mountain and considering our lack of hiking experience, we opted for the small easy lookout trail. Took the rocky path up and came back down the trail. All the views are incredible but north lookout is AMAZING! I cant even explain how beautiful this place is. Definitely going back up and trying some of the other trails out very soon. There is a small $10 fee for non members which is fine by me considering how the trails are well taken care of.

It’s certainly a beautiful maintained private bird sanctuary but unfortunately it’s very popular and if you were looking to hike in privacy this isn’t the place.

Wear good shoes good workout especially if you outta shape

Our 9 year old did great, but if I had known just how steep the rock climbs and scrambles would be, I probably would’ve picked a different t trail for her. As it was, everything turned out ok, but it sure did make me nervous! The Hawk Sanctuary is a beautiful area and the trails are taxing but fun. We only saw one Eagle today, but ran into three rattlers. Enjoyed checking out the river of rocks and the views from lookout trail. Recommend you bring sturdy shoes to help with the climbs and scrambles (of which there are plenty along Skyline Trail).

Took our 7 year olds on this. We made it 2 miles in and then turned around. Challenging climb out but we enjoyed the adventure!

Just getting started into hiking and doing this place has me hooked. Big variety of terrain. Especially loved the scramble areas. Wish this place was closer to home. Great views from the various lookout points. Well maintained.

Very well kept trail. Did this counter clockwise (most reviews suggest). Took me 4 hrs and the vistas at the end are amazing! The skyline part is where the big rocks are with the hawks flying. Very good hike with some challenging parts. Oh don’t forget to pay $10 fee at the office...

Just a friendly FYI... there is a fee to hike here.

My 10 year old son and I hiked the entire loop. I started with the lookout trail to scale up the mountain because the golden trail is a lot easier to go down instead of going up with a child. Amazing views and picture perfect spots. The lookout views are the most populated, however the trails typically are not crowded. You are pretty much by yourself which is what I like. The mountain is nicely looked after by the people who work there. No fallen trees and nicely marked so you never feel lost. They have employees at look out spots that will provide information about the hawks, vultures, eagles etc which was pretty cool and my son enjoyed it. I wear my high top hiking shoes for this mountain because there are so many rocks. My ankles hurt when I wear my regular hiking shoes. Don’t forget to being your binoculars! We saw two bald eagles!

Beautiful views, rocky in spots & pretty crowded. Wear good hiking boots. Saw three copperheads on the trail. Would definitely do again.

Great hike.

Great trail! Going counterclockwise was a good choice after seeing the entire loop. It allows you to end with a great view.

If you plan on completing the whole loop start with the “river of rocks trail”. This will allow you to come down the easiest route once you reach the peak. The trail was well marked. It’s very rocky and large sections require participants to scramble over boulders and large rocks. Watch your step and come prepared. We also spotted a rattlesnake near the “south lookout”. The trails also cost $10.00 person to use.
