Hard to say what real trail conditions would be like since it was raining the entire time. With rain the trail is definitely flooded. There were down trees but all could be easily passed. The trail could use a few more signs, but with a map the trail was easily navigated. Also my GPS tracked this at 11.12 miles. Overall, really nice run!

Backpacking

I recently went on a backpacking trip from shellrock to Serene and back to Shellrock, it was a very quick hike into Shellrock about let then 1 hour and easy trial. over all this is a great lake for swimming but not so good for fishing.

That first three miles was strenuous, but totally doable. I should have brought more water, but it was ok because I refilled at a stream just before the lake. No mosquitoes except at a water stream. I skipped the lake because I’m pretty sure it had mosquitoes and would add another half mile to my 17mi loop. It was a hot day but there was typically a breeze which kept me cool. Be sure to take breaks and replenish those electrolytes. Lots of flowers everywhere, very pretty trail. The last guy in AllTrails said he saw a cougar and a cougar killed a woman on this trail two years ago, so I brought bear spray.

From the Shellrock Lake trailhead this ended up being just about 12 miles round trip. I went clockwise at the juncture of the top of Shellrock Lake trail just beyond Frazier Turnaround, and this front-loaded most of the elevation gain and allowed a more relaxed final third. Overall the trail was in good shape. Snow almost completely gone, although some sections of the trail were under water, particularly near Cache meadow. Others described losing the trail, but I didn’t find this to be the case. I opted to wear my waterproof winter hiking boots and was glad I did, although to be fair summer boots would have been ok except near Cache. Very few people once I got past Shellrock Lake, which was packed. Some people leaving Serene Lake described dozens of campers and bad mosquitoes, surprise surprise. Beautiful old growth, trail in great shape overall with only a few blowdowns.

Beware of car vandalism if you park here overnight!! Absolutely lovely trail. I would rate this trail as moderate/easy , although a few stream crossing might make it hard for some. Many great overnight camping sites. The whole experience would have been great with the exception that we came back to our vans with broken windows as someone had broken in and tried to rob anything of value that they could find...we had left nothing in there , but the cost of a new window made for a pricey backpacking trip

Snow

Make sure you've got your maps downloaded and you keep checking them. My girlfriend and I went May 31st, and there was so much snow we got lost a few times so we turned around.

Second time on this trail and it didn’t disappoint. If you are looking for a great work out and beautiful forest scenery then this trail is for you. I didn’t go all the way to devil’s peak this time, but there is a nice view there. Be prepared for some downed trees, but nothing you won’t be able to navigate.

This is Forest Bathing! The trail runs parallel to the river the entire length, the air was filled with the sounds running water and bird song, and the fragrance of moss and pine was discernible with every breath. A perfect, lazy Sunday hike. Some traversing streams and exposed roots add a little texture. The muddiness made me glad for waterproof boots and gaiters, but most hikers were enjoying the trail just fine without that kind of gear. Lots of picnic tables along the way with families taking lunch outside. We even met a swimming hole that asked us to come back when the weathers gets warm :)

Roads are partially closed still (but didn’t stop a lot of people to park further up) Couldn’t make it up to Devils Peak. Fella pulled a muscle & had to turn around close to the top (Even having time walk the last 2 miles on the road). Seen another couple who said they didn’t make it to the lookout either but to the split. Super fun hike. A few down trees but did see a trail maintenance on 742A.

Lots of snow still, more so on the southern loop. Walkable still for sure, just hard to stay on trail for some parts. We stayed at lake serene overnight and it was beautiful. South west corner by the rock slide looked like the coolest campsite from what we saw. We went clockwise but if you want to get your elevation in day 1, might want to start with the southern loop first.

Nice, well maintained, hike along a beautiful river. Overflowing vegetation everywhere. Perfect hike for kids or with Grandparents. Go as long or short as you'd like. Lots of places to rest and take in the scenery.

Great little trail along the Salmon River. Remarkably peaceful. Quite muddy and slick in places (we hiked in February 2020). We hiked in 1.5 miles but came to a tough creek crossing, and with a 7 year old in tow, decided to head back to the trailhead. All told we did exactly 3 miles. Good for kids and dogs too.

A great lite hike with bright green moss covered trees and continuous sounds of running water. Waterproof shoes recommended winter months .
