This segment of the Middle Fork Willamette Trail, which starts at the Sand Prairie Campground and continues over 30 miles to Timpanogas Lake, follows along the Middle Fork Willamette River in an area called "Big Swamp". This part of the trail is relatively flat and features old growth forest.

Gorgeous Fall hike with beautiful colors. Hiked to small pool and back.

Not a lot of water this time of year but also too dry for mosquitos! I'd rate this trail as easy since I took the boyfriend (who doesn't hike) and he completed the 6.5 miles (round trip) with ease. The pool is a tad too cold for a relaxing dip, but good rock hunting.

Just an update. This loop and other parts of the Grasshopper Trail were cleared of all down logs by the Scorpion crew of the High Cascades Forest Volunteers. The views on top were great and the wildflowers abundant. Some brush cutting was done, too. It was good we worked this loop on Summer Solstice. A long day of packing saws and other tools but the trails are in good shape.

The water had been significantly drained, so what we thought would be a creek-side-cruz, ended up being a trek alongside a drained river bank. The hike was still beautiful, well marked and mild. 3.5 miles in was a beautiful little swimming hole. The mosquitos are no joke!

No real complaints. views of the water, lots of greenery, had the trail to myself the whole time, did 5.5 miles in a couple hours. good way to pass time, trail is pretty flat, lightly trafficed.

5/14/17 this trail is much longer than a 5.6 round-trip. According to FS.USDA.gov this is a 6.3mile (one way) trail. The first 3miles are pretty gentle. At around 3 miles the incline increases and is a steady climb. About 4 miles in the trail starts switch-backing with a good grade to it. I did 9.71miles (in-and-out) today and my tracker showed me 1-2miles from NF-101 before I had to turn back due to time. I will definitely do this one again when I can get an earlier start.

Trail is well maintained. Fairly private, we ran into one other couple hiking and a mountain biker.

Great hike on a well maintained single track trail. Met one cyclist. Most of walk is along or within ear-shot of water. Nice pool at 3-3.5 miles.
Directions listed here were accurate and easy to follow. No toilet at trailhead :)

I hiked Chucksney Mountain on June 25 via Chucksney Trail and then Grasshopper Trail on the way back to make it a loop.

The total distance is just about 11 Miles... but felt like 15 or 16 due to a large number of blowdowns on both trails (Chucksney being the worst). As I did not see a single soul for the whole 6 hours I surmise that more astute hikers may have gotten news that the House Keeping crew had not yet gotten to clear all the fallen trees. Climbing over, ducking under, bushwhacking my way around, walking on a couple logs for 200 feet in one case made this medium distance hike a rather challenging one. The trails (especially Chucksney again) was overgrown in many places. On the "challenges" side I can also mention the bugs and mosquitoes at the top (thank you Bug Spray!).

If you are lucky enough to find the trail "spruced up" this would be a rather enjoyable forest walk or workout depending on your shape. There are a few views on the way up Chucksney trail but the best is really from the top where you can see many peak of the Cascades (Diamond Peak, Bachelor, the three Sisters, Broken Top, Jefferson...even Hood.

If you are only doing this hike for the views, its a long way to go; but maybe, like me, you find many pleasures in spending a few hours following a trail :-)

This quickly became one of my favorite hiking trails. I enjoy how the trail is so close to the creek, with so many great views along the way. There are several small waterfalls spilling into the creek in the first few miles of the hike. At about 3 miles there is a accessible trail down to the bank, where you can view a crystal clear pool with a small waterfall cascading into it. The trail continues along the creek, sometimes right next to it, and sometimes way above it, but still able to hear it rushing downhill.

One of the best things I like about this hike is the scenery along the way. Dense woods, cascading falls, treelined ridges viewable through the small clearings. All of which made for a great hike.
