Really great view of the hills. Went towards dusk and the sunset view was amazing.

Surely one of the most unique hills I have ever seen. Best view on sunset.

Much more of a walk than a hike— good for families and individuals of any skill level. Really beautiful place

Cool red hill. This isn’t the hike with the board walk but worth adding on to the trip.

This is more of a destination for taking in some amazing views than it is a hike. Best to go early as it’s a popular spot and is more enjoyable with fewer people around.

The painted hills are more of a little walk/hike. The landscape is stunning and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth the drive! (August 2016)hik

Short but sweet. Stop in at the sidewalk cafe in the small town of Mitchell and get a yummy milkshake while you are out there.

Super short with no shade, we went early enough to take dogs out but if it's after 9am it might be too hot; the views weren't necessarily better at the top but still glad we went up. Amazing area with some educational info at the parking lot.

Nice and steep on the ascent, nice desert landscape on the trail. View at the top was all right.

I wouldn't call the half mile walk a hike by any means but had the best view of the Hills of any I'd seen

Painted Hills is an awesome landmark because you can see millions of years revealed in the different colored layers of the mountain. Take the Carroll Rim Trail for a viewpoint of the hills, but there’s NO shade so if the temps are hot, bring lots of water. I had to spray my dog with water the whole way so he could stay cool and hydrated. If you don’t want to hike, there’s a parking lot where you can get much closer to the hills without having to walk very much. The time of season you visit will determine how many different colors you will see. Since we visited in the summer, the palette wasn’t as colorful, but it was still cool to see.

So beautiful! Totally recommend everyone to go here. If you are thinking of camping near John Day stay at Clyde Holliday State Park.

Short. Sweet trail with good view and payoff. I sat down next to a snake. I wasn't paying enough attention clearly.

Does not disappoint

Very short trail along the south flank of Red Star Knoll.

if you are into geology then go however my suggestion for others is the following : if you happen to be within 40 minutes of here, go otherwise it may not be worth it. I also agree with the "trail" comment; it is really just a path.

Awesome view from the top! I will be back :-)

IF you're looking for a hike, the Carroll Rim Trail (also on AllTrails) is for you. The rest are several loops found on a gravel road. The scenery was breath taking and worth the driving to get to the unit. Highly Recommended.

Not a hike but a great place to appreciate Mother Earth and take in all the colors!
