This trail goes past both South and North campgrounds around Cottonwood Meadows lake. It is really pretty, with views of old growth Ponderosa, Lodgepole and Fir forest with Aspen and Cottonwood groves. There are at least two beautiful flowing shallow creeks to cross with small tiny waterfalls. The trail is actually called Cottonwood Lake Loop Trail. There is a big parking lot at the trailhead. The trail goes up and heads northeast above the lake then ends up at the first campground and then keep going through the campground, through the day use area, around the lake, across the footbridge to the south campground and the trail is then the road, going west. Then stay on the road going past the Organization Camp. Go South until you reach the Trailhead sign. The aspen groves in this area around the lake are beautiful!!

Beautiful trail with nice views, well marked throughout. There are a couple of river crossings, rough and/or rutted sections and some steep hills. Overall the trail is a nice single track, we added the Dave's Bailout section to see the hill of wildflowers and the river which made the hike 4 miles. We left a car at one trailhead and hiked one way and were shuttled back to our vehicle. This is a favorite trail for many people who live locally.

A fun trail, particularly the north side. South side near the east end/jct with Cottonwood Creek Trail has too many downed trees. But you can take the campground roads instead, which is actually prettier because they go along the lake.
