According to Forest Service the trail is about 9m each way. We go in July when there is no snow on the trail. It takes about 6 hours to get up, maybe less getting down, with a 30m lunch break and a few rests.
It’s unreal up there.... absolutely amazing.

This is a great area with beautiful views for trail running or a walk with kids. It should not be rated moderate as it is very easy with minimal climbing.

This is farther than All Trails states. When we approached the trailhead, the sign states 9 miles to Ice Lake.

Fun hike with lots to see!

Well worth the hike! The lake is stunning.

This is an easy hike with incredible views at the top of Mt. Howard. It’s a tram ride up and down the mountain. It was a gorgeous day today, sunny and breezy. Burgers and brews at the top. Fun but not hardcore hiking!

This was a beautiful hike the whole way with the gorgeous reward of Aneroid lake at the end. First two miles are steepish but after that it gently climbs. We did this on 6/22/18. Small snow patches up near the lake. The top 3 miles of the trail are ok for somewhat technical trail running. We ran down from the lake for about 4 miles but that last mile was we’re rocky.

This hike was super tough. We originally planned to camp at Ice Lake. But when we got about a mile form the lake the trail seemed to go straight up and the weather got cold. There were rumors of rain/snow, so we decided to go back and not get stuck. The views were spectacular. This is a definite try again in better weather.

Gorgeous hike with not a lot of people..

Nice leisurely walk with gorgeous views!

Have done this hike several times, carried my daughter in the pack a couple times. My then 8 year old son did the hike and was ahead of me running the whole time!

Fantastic Spring Hike. There was still some snow fields on the hillsides which filled the creek and added a wild sound effect to the downhill rushing water. The trail is easy but gradually up. A good destination is the waterfall. My GPS had the out and back hike at 6.8 miles, with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. You walk up a canyon into the mountains. Do this hike, you won't be sorry.

This is the current Wallow Lake East Moraine Trial as determined by the City of Joseph. (2017, cite: https://www.wallowalandtrust.org/images/stories/land_protection/East-Moraine-Trails-Plan_draft.pdf). The first few hundred feet are killer on the quads as the trail boldly takes you straight up the moraine incline. As of August 2017 there was no specifically determined trail up the incline from the trailhead. We made our own switchbacks, being careful not to further erode any worn spots. Poles were mighty helpful, and certainly so coming down! Once you crest the moraine, the remaining incline is fairly gentle and allows for wonderful views of the Wallowas and Wallowa Lake. We headed up in the evening and descended westward at sunset. Very nice trail, a great scramble for kiddos, and big thanks to the City of Joseph for working to provide the public with a specific place to view the sites.

Beautiful trail for one so heavily-trafficked. Moderately strenuous incline. Switchbacks offered great views. Looking forward to to some bridge-repair allowing safe crossing to the remainder of this trail. We stopped and turned back at the waterfall. Going to have to go back!

Winter hike up here, not too much snow right now - didn’t require snowshoes. It was, however, really icy. Trekking poles work great to keep you on two feet! The hike is very nice, not too hard but you can work up a bit of a sweat too with a faster pace! Most of the trail follows the river closely, the waterfall is lovely, and the evidence of avalanches really makes an impression; tons of downed trees and debris from who-knows-when.

We hiked to the waterfall in winter on a beautiful clear day. This hike is amazing! The mountains Loom up right next to you, unexpectedly and gloriously close. I highly recommend this Trail in the winter because the ice that forms on top of the running water is so very pretty.

It recorded around 7.5mi one way and it kinda felt like more than that...probably because of the elevation gain. Had to break the trail off on the last 3mi or so due to snow-seemed like it was 5in tall. Started late so had to camp out 4.3mi into the trail. Amazing view at the end, although it’s very windy. You can see the Matterhorn peak; will definitely go back here to summit Matterhorn and Sacagawea peaks!

Nice fall hike with creek and lake views. Bridge is out at the falls, keeping it short, though is passable if you are ok getting your feet wet.

Mellow hike. Worth it tromping over to Slick Rock

I hiked to Ice Lake last July. This is an amazing place, one of my favorite hikes.

We hiked this trail on Saturday 9/23. It was a gorgeous hike but beware of snow the last 1-2 miles up to the lake. We were probably up to our knees the last mile or so and had been first on the trail to pack it down so it was slow going. Other than that, the trail was in great condition and I would definitely hike this again and hopefully remember to bring my gators this time ;)

Beautiful lake and hike. We did it in one day, including going up to Matterhorn peak after having lunch at the lake. Would have been better to camp the night instead of doing that all in one shot. Very challenging, especially from the lake to Matterhorn. We started at 8:30 am and got back to the car at 6:30 pm. We kept a pretty fast pace to beat sundown. Definitely go up to Matterhorn, I suggest walking sticks though! The view is absolutely amazing. Be sure to follow the cairns to get to the peak.

Trail was a bit harder than we thought it would be, but not impossible. Beautiful lake. Lots of people backpacking over labor day, but still plenty of spots when we got up there late. Planned on summiting Matterhorn, but didn't get to it. I'll be back ice lake.

My dog and I hiked in starting around 1pm on the Friday before Labor Day. The trail was well-marked with several opportunities for water along the way. Lots of flowers and nice views. The route was steep but the timing kept me out of the sun during the steepest bit. When we arrived, I opted to walk down the trail to my right to the far side of the lake and, to my surprise, had the place all to myself. (Good timing as I passed hordes of backpackers on the trail during my descent the next day). There are some nice campsites in the trees with a short walk to the lake for a chilly dip in the water.

I camped overnight at Ice Lake in July 2017. This place is absolutely gorgeous. The view of the Matterhorn from Ice Lake is breathtaking. This is one of my favorite hikes and I would love to do it in the winter.

The views are great! Come early to avoid crowds.

Bridge was out and had to cut the trail short.

Did this as a day hike, took about 6 hours round trip. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
