Grizzly Peak is special. The view at the top is one of the best I’ve seen of Jefferson. You are so close. I did this trail on November 12th and did not need a permit as limited entry is Memorial Day to Oct 31. There was crunchy snow at the top, but it was not slippery. Some downed trees and it feels like you are climbing for a long time. So worth it though. It is mainly a spectacular view of Jefferson. It is NOT 360 degrees to include other peaks due to trees. You can see Jack and Sisters, but the views are just okay. If Jefferson is your target, this is your trail. Road is paved most of the way to trailhead and even gravel part is good.

Trail is well marked. Getting there was relatively easy. Steady climb all the way to the top. Took me two hours to summit, and there was some snow at the very top. Great views, would highly recommend.

7.8 mi and 3000 ft of gain. Great views of Jefferson but you work for them. After the first 1.5 miles you are walking on small ankle turning rocks. Great foliage and I recommend as a fall hike. You are exposed to full sun during the last mile or so. Breitenbush is lovely with small creek crossings and every shade of green.

This is a nice hike, be sure to get a pass online before you show up! There are rangers along the hike that will be asking. The fall colors were pretty. It was a bit cloudy when I went so I was unable to see the mountain but overall a decent hike - not crowded.

The first mile(ish) of the trail is rough, but to be expected after the devastating Whitewater fire. I never saw the "featured" lake though. I had an ineresting mind meld through the hike - from the first steps I took up the trail all I could see was the black charred timber and landscape. On the way back out (hiked all the way into Pamelia Lake) all I couls see was the new green growth. The forest has a magnificent way of healing itself :)

Excellent, moderate trails. Good campsites at Pamelia must be reserved but free camping is now allowed away from the lake. Trail up to Hank’s Lake passes over many gorgeous cascades and climbs to more open country. Note that there is no fishing in Pamelia Lake, the trout appear to have been killed off by a drought some years ago, but trout were prolific in Pamelia Creek below the lake.

This is not an easy (overnight) hike, seemed like half of it was through dry (and generally rocky) riverbed. I read other reviews, and by God, it SEEMED like 9 miles, but my map showed 5 1/2 to 6. Jeff Park is just incredible (stayed Scout lake). Would like to do the easier climb from the East, but Forest Service said the road is impassable for most cars.

This hike is one of my all-time favorites. It is especially beautiful to hike in late September or early October. The fall colors are breathtaking. The terrain continually changes and keeps things interesting. So very important to wear supportive hiking shoes as you traverse rocky creek beds. This is a remote hike and we only passed by one other couple. Our dog ran off leash the entire time. The lakes are beautiful, quiet and so peaceful. I will hike this hike every fall!

Great hike. But most of the members of the group were stung by yellow jackets or wasp ground nest 10-15 minutes after leaving Pamela Lake. Beware!

*** Be aware, there is a COUGAR active in this area. ***

If you want to question all life choices you’ve ever made try this trail! Haha but seriously this trail is not 6 miles I clocked it at 9.5 miles to Russel lake and I checked on the way back got the same distance so I have no idea where 6 miles is coming from. This trail is relentless and difficult so if you want to cry for 6 miles try it out! Hahahaha the lake is pretty sweet though. Make sure you bring a pad to sleep on because the ground is reeeeeeeeally hard. At the end make sure you go left if you want to get to Russel lake because it’s not marked.

Ive never been on the PCT but was surprised how many people I came across. I only did about 3.5 miles out instead of the 5.5 but I ran into at least 30 people (all backpackers). Beautiful views and the trail is easy to follow. The road is ROUGH. The rocks don’t look bad as you approach them but you definitely get knocked around. Do not attempt in a sedan... at all. I have a Jeep and that was perfect.

Great day. I agree that it is an 8 mile hike. That is what my phone recorded as well. The climb the last few miles is a good workout and the trail is fairly rocky with scree in some places. Views are spectacular. Bring lots of water. I brought my dog. Only a few very friendly folks on the trail today. Trailhead is super easy to find.

It was a nice easy well marked about 5 mile hike. It was a beautiful forest. The lake was very low and that allowed you to see rocks that had some interesting stripes. For needing a special use permit I expected something much more spectacular and/or unique.

Easy, gentle incline up to Pamelia Lake. Lake is almost empty. Only ~5 campsites occupied on a Friday night.

Grizzly Peak trail had gorgeous views, but watch out for yellow jackets on the trail! Swarming by the dozens - I was stung twice.

Nice hike through old growth forest and along creek. Great water sources for filtering. Great road to trail head. Only 3 of the 12 lakeside campsites occupied on a Tuesday night, 8/14/18. Water level down in Pamelia Lake, deepest part of lake about 12 inches deep.

Great hike! Easy to get to the trailhead, gravel forest road was in great shape. Stellar views of Mt. Jefferson and was lightly trafficked on a Saturday. Bring lots of water!

Nice trail, view of mount Jefferson was amazing!

First 5 miles is a continuous uphill trudge with lots of loose rocks on the trail. This made for a less enjoyable hike getting to Russell lake and even on the way back a bit tricky as it is easy to roll an ankle, despite being downhill.

If looking to get to Russell Lake using this trail, just know it is NOT 6mi, more like 8.5mi.

Good hike, strenuous but not difficult. Path is a little overgrown. Gorgeous view of Mt Jefferson above the tree line. I think I'll do this again, but not when it's 90 in the shade.

Beautiful area and a good trail up to the lakes. Past the lakes the trail follows a creek bed up a fairly steep hill which is very rocky- wear good boots! Meets with Pacific Crest Trail at the top of the hill. Great day hike but a bit strenuous in warm weather (80-85). Beautiful mountain lakes!

7/14/18 This route into Jeff Park a much more difficult hike due to the years of erosion and loose rock on the trail. Good news is that because the Whitewater TH is closed due to 2017 fire there were FAR fewer campers. swimming in Scout Lake was absolute bliss.

Beautiful trail beside Pamelia Creek transports you to the small lake. Went in on a Thursday and there were open campsites. Ranger mentioned they would post at the trailhead if there are any known algae bloom issues which there none. There a posting of a cougar siting south of Pamelia Lake on July 5th, 2018.

The creek has dried up so be sure to bring extra water for you and your furry friends! Beautiful hike but it was super hot making the trail dry and dusty today. Lots of good places to camp and so many additional trails and lakes to explore - will definitely be back again!

very family and pet friendly walk. great scenery and wildlife. The creek was outstanding beauty. Once at the lake we watched the osprey dive repeatingly from the air into the water and come up with a fish. Once in a lifetime moment. hour and a half walk each way.

This was a fairly easy trail alongside a creek that featured white water and mini waterfalls. The lake and mountain were stunning and I could not stop staring at the perfect reflection of the mountain in the water. This made for a great half-day hike.

Gorgeous views, and solidarity one year post Whitewater Fire. With the Whitewater Trail closed, I expected to see more people hiking this trail as an alternative. Strenuous hike, continuous incline the entire time. We turned around after 4.5 miles because we were not as strong as we thought! The views of Mt Jefferson and wildflowers were stunning and worth the workout! Would love to hike further next time to access the lakes.

Perfect conditions right now on the trail but almost 3/4ths is covered in loose rock so wear some supported shoes. Did this backpacking up to Scout Lake and it wasn’t crazy strenuous, just long. Took us about 4:30 to get up with some stops. If you’re looking to camp up, spots do fill up but Great Lake views! Loved it!
