Grizzly Peak is special. The view at the top is one of the best I’ve seen of Jefferson. You are so close. I did this trail on November 12th and did not need a permit as limited entry is Memorial Day to Oct 31. There was crunchy snow at the top, but it was not slippery. Some downed trees and it feels like you are climbing for a long time. So worth it though. It is mainly a spectacular view of Jefferson. It is NOT 360 degrees to include other peaks due to trees. You can see Jack and Sisters, but the views are just okay. If Jefferson is your target, this is your trail. Road is paved most of the way to trailhead and even gravel part is good.

This is a nice hike, be sure to get a pass online before you show up! There are rangers along the hike that will be asking. The fall colors were pretty. It was a bit cloudy when I went so I was unable to see the mountain but overall a decent hike - not crowded.

Excellent, moderate trails. Good campsites at Pamelia must be reserved but free camping is now allowed away from the lake. Trail up to Hank’s Lake passes over many gorgeous cascades and climbs to more open country. Note that there is no fishing in Pamelia Lake, the trout appear to have been killed off by a drought some years ago, but trout were prolific in Pamelia Creek below the lake.

This hike is one of my all-time favorites. It is especially beautiful to hike in late September or early October. The fall colors are breathtaking. The terrain continually changes and keeps things interesting. So very important to wear supportive hiking shoes as you traverse rocky creek beds. This is a remote hike and we only passed by one other couple. Our dog ran off leash the entire time. The lakes are beautiful, quiet and so peaceful. I will hike this hike every fall!

Great hike. But most of the members of the group were stung by yellow jackets or wasp ground nest 10-15 minutes after leaving Pamela Lake. Beware!

*** Be aware, there is a COUGAR active in this area. ***

It was a nice easy well marked about 5 mile hike. It was a beautiful forest. The lake was very low and that allowed you to see rocks that had some interesting stripes. For needing a special use permit I expected something much more spectacular and/or unique.

Easy, gentle incline up to Pamelia Lake. Lake is almost empty. Only ~5 campsites occupied on a Friday night.

Grizzly Peak trail had gorgeous views, but watch out for yellow jackets on the trail! Swarming by the dozens - I was stung twice.

Nice hike through old growth forest and along creek. Great water sources for filtering. Great road to trail head. Only 3 of the 12 lakeside campsites occupied on a Tuesday night, 8/14/18. Water level down in Pamelia Lake, deepest part of lake about 12 inches deep.

Nice trail, view of mount Jefferson was amazing!

Beautiful area and a good trail up to the lakes. Past the lakes the trail follows a creek bed up a fairly steep hill which is very rocky- wear good boots! Meets with Pacific Crest Trail at the top of the hill. Great day hike but a bit strenuous in warm weather (80-85). Beautiful mountain lakes!

Beautiful trail beside Pamelia Creek transports you to the small lake. Went in on a Thursday and there were open campsites. Ranger mentioned they would post at the trailhead if there are any known algae bloom issues which there none. There a posting of a cougar siting south of Pamelia Lake on July 5th, 2018.

The creek has dried up so be sure to bring extra water for you and your furry friends! Beautiful hike but it was super hot making the trail dry and dusty today. Lots of good places to camp and so many additional trails and lakes to explore - will definitely be back again!

very family and pet friendly walk. great scenery and wildlife. The creek was outstanding beauty. Once at the lake we watched the osprey dive repeatingly from the air into the water and come up with a fish. Once in a lifetime moment. hour and a half walk each way.

This was a fairly easy trail alongside a creek that featured white water and mini waterfalls. The lake and mountain were stunning and I could not stop staring at the perfect reflection of the mountain in the water. This made for a great half-day hike.

Good trail. Very family friendly. There is a gradual grade but nothing too crazy. Snow still dots the ground past the lake. Official camp sites seemed crowded.

went 4/22, still a decent amount of snow on the trail. Gaiters needed, but no snow shoes to reach the lake. some clearing to set up a tent on the shore.

Great for families and their first-time backpacking trips

Hard to beat this hike through the wilderness forest. The first mile was clear; the upper portion had a fair bit of snow on it from this year's early snowfall. The lake was beautiful. And went beyond the lake to the PCT, as far as Moon Creek, which is right at the base of Mt. Jefferson--stunning!

Not a technical trail but very fun! All lakes have great camping options. Got to the trail head a bit late so spent the first night at Red Lake. Everyone says that the camping here isn't good but my friend and I enjoyed it very much. There is a great spot if you take the spur trail down to the lake and go right (SW) about 15-20 yards is a spot with a great fire pit that we improved and a view of the top of Mt. Jefferson that we were able to watch the colors of the sunset on. Once dark came we stayed up late listening to the frogs and the owls while enjoying the fire and our hammocks. Next day we hiked to Wall Lake and went swimming for a couple of hours. AMAZING WATER!!!! Turned left at the junction heading towards Lower Lake and Fish Lake and went to Gifford Lake. By far one of the most beautiful lakes I've ever been to and the swimming was to DIE FOR!!!!! Spent the night at Gifford under the full moon. Nice views overlooking Twin Peaks. We also bushwhacked around the lake and had lunch on top of the cliffs on the back side of the lake. You get a couple of Spots where you can see MT. Hood as well as another lake up there. From there made our way down to Lower Lake and stayed a night where the creek flows out of the lake and enjoyed the camp spot and found a few huckleberry bushes along the river that were ripe already, YUM!!! Swimming in Lower Lake was still nice and refreshing but a bit colder. All the lakes along the trail system did not have fish that I noticed except Lower Lake, which I saw some Brook Trout surfacing. The lake also has Crawdads and views of Ollalie Butte. Next time I do this trail I will try to hike up Twin Peaks and Potato Butte. All in all a splendid trail system with lots of options and not too many people.

Unsure of why exactly this trail is rated as difficult, the hike leading to Pamelia Lake specifically is pretty laid back. This was my first solo day-hike, maybe it's difficult with backpacking gear. Elevation gain is very minimal and spread nicely throughout the ~2.5 miles to the destination. Maybe I just went at a good time in the season. I did this beautiful hike 2 days ago after learning that the Whitewater trailhead to Jefferson was blocked off due to a fire. Evidence of that fire was definitely clear, I could smell smoke during the hike and I could see it like hazy fog over the lake/surrounding mountains. Pamelia lake is so relaxing, I didn't get the chance to do the Grizzly Peak or Hunt's Creek trailheads but I will definitely be back soon with my friends! Lots of butterflies.

Sweet views at the top. No snow as of 7/6/17

Great hike with not to bad of an incline. Thankfully someone in the past couple days had left footprints in the snow since the last 1100' of the trail are covered and would have been tough to find the top. Well worth the adventure for an amazing view of Mt Jefferson.

Took a Saturday and went up there. Hiking was great however fishing not so much. Hard to gain access to lake because of thick and down vegetation. Based on pictures looks like lake was high and is usually lower than what we experienced. Those who have a small raft or waders may have a better shot. Spoke with local who had been coming up there for many many years and said lake is not stocked therefore fish populations declining rapidly.
Overalls awesome hike and scenery but bummer on the fishing

The road off 22 to get the to the trailhead was in much better shape than expected. Great, relaxing hike. Forest Ranger was roping off sections of the Lake to allow for habitat restoration. Hike only had snow the last 1/2 mile or so to the lake, hardback, minimal post-holing.

Beautiful hike even with the bit of snow still left in the trail. Highly recommended for families.

About 75% of the trail still has snow, makes it a little harder walking, but certainly manageable. Especially on a clear sunny day like today when I was dying for the view at Pamelia Lake. It was stunning!

Enjoyed the trail today despite the weather not being the best. Some rocky areas and quite a bit of snow above the 4,000 foot level. The lakes were beautiful and well worth the hike. Lots of additional water in the creek areas, definitely will slow down your progress unless you don't mind wading through. Not a very difficult trail to be honest, I would say moderate is a fair assessment. Would love to do this one again on a clear day where you can see the peaks and surrounding areas
