I dont think this was my fav. My friend and I did the whole loop..I think about 3 miles or more.
probably because of the cold but I wasn't as thrilled. Also I may not like sand as much as I thought. half of it was surrounded by sand. and I just got tired of it. anyways if you're a fan..you'll love it. there is some walking through trees which was beautiful.

Backpacked in at night with a group of Scouts. Trail well defined and easy to negotiate with headlamps. Fairly busy at the lake but the weather was ideal for October. No problems finding camping spots for 6 adults and 12 scouts even by headlamps. Beautiful location with access to water for filtering. Highly recommended.

We hiked the dune trail to Three Mike Lake, taking the longer loop at the beginning. Because of the Sandy Plover we didn’t walk on the beach portion with the pup. Hike ended up being about 7.8 miles. There was thick sand throughout the portion from the main trail to the lake. Went off trail towards the end and through some dune valleys and peaks before scrambling up a dune to reach the rim overlooking the lake. Could hear the ocean, very peaceful, there was no one else out there.

Just beautiful! Loved this trail. Rating seems right, it’s easy! Highly recommend it

Great loop hike

Turned out to be a lot longer then we thought. The trail through the dunes is not marked very well just just keep a eye out for the trail markings. I didn’t record this I forgot to turn it on but it took us about 2hrs. We did this with our 1yr and 5yr old 1yr old in a pack once reaching the beach it seems like forever before you see the trail to start back just be prepared for a work out hiking through the dunes is not a easy task.

Loved this hike though it turned out a bit longer than we intended. We did not go far enough down the beach to cut back in so we doubled back and went through the dunes turning it into about 10 miles. Just make sure you keep going down the beach until you see a big sign on the left, it is in the area where vehicles are allowed.

The trail map is out of date. This trail now connects with the Takenitch creek trail to the north.

nice walk, very fun, lots of sand from the dunes though so it makes it very difficult after a while. still totally worth it and a good time!

we only made it as far as the dunes because we started too late in the day (we stumbled on it accidentally on a drive through the area after dinner) but it was so beautiful! took our three kids (8, 6, and 2) and our Saint Bernard and they all handled it easily. we plan to go back early in the day and walk the entire thing because it was so breathtaking!

Diverse and amazing scenery, forest meets dune slopes. Great for trail running. Nicely shaded in the forest, secluded beach

Minor elevation gain over 3 miles to reach great views of both freshwater lake & ocean. Found a camp site at the edge of the trail, but didn't find a defined trail to the shore. I accessed lake via steep dune. Not sure if there is a better way to enjoy the beautiful lake.

It's been a few years, but we had a blast with this trail. Did have to remove our shoes to cross water to our ankles. Wooded sections, sandy dune spots, and beach! Didn't see any other folks either way.

Great hike with kids. About 30 minutes in (at slow pace) The trail gives you the option of taking a small loop or a larger loop where parents can opt for more or less depending on how things are going.

Nice, easy trail. Quick there and back for all ages and abilities.

We took the trail down till it merged heading south with the tahkenitch dunes trail then bypassed the beach option and connected down to three mile and turned around and headed back. Good hike but bring your sandy shoes, dog loved it!

Easy trail for 10 & 12 yr old. Just the right amount for an afternoon out. Loop is clearly marked in 4 places making it nice breaking it into stages. 1 bench at the beginning of trail offers nice spot for a snack with an ok view. Rated 4 due to it being easy for kids with decent views. Could have been 5 with vista or perhaps more sitting areas for rest stops. Trail has options for longer hikes. I think it may take you to beach if your up for a longer hike

Beginning of the trail is still in good condition however the trail down to the lake is pretty much gone so is the beach! The trail down to the ocean is still there but is being overgrown. We saw no other travelers. The main road to get to the trailhead I recommend a pickup or SUV there are huge potholes!

Great for families with strollers. Very pretty and minimal insects during May. Easy stroll in the park, if you will.

A definite elevation gain right at the beginning and in the middle of this hike. It was a beautiful hike, and perfect in early September. There is a point at which you are on a sand dune but also in forest...so lovely. Saw a blue heron at the lake. Met no other hikers despite several hours on the trail. The several bridges on the trail were in excellent repair.

excellent trail. very diverse in land types. only pain was the sand, however it wasn't too bad all in all. I would go back, but beware of summer time as the beach is closed off (to a degree) as it is a nesting area for a protected species.

An excellent trail with diverse environments: forest, dunes, ocean and, especially, the swimmable Threemile lake with sandy bottom. It is not often that one can make a splash on the way, ponds/lakes/creeks sometimes have rocky bottom that one can injure feet in. Highly recommended.

A nice August morning hike. This was s perfect day to hike this trail. Great trail with lots of greenery and forest type hike. Don't forget to have $5 cash on you. This is a pay site. Worth the $5.

we were so bit up by mosquitos we had to turn back after making it across the bridge and I would never have made it across sand dunes to the ocean as I have an ankle I broke in 2006 it does not do well over dunes at all. rolls too much. I advise to heavily think about repellant before taking this trail.

Good hike but no dogs allowed

We did the entire loop which includes another trail that loops around. Total distance 7.5 miles. We used the directions from google thru this app and it lead us to a random spot. The actual trail is a half mile further up from where the directions lead. The map at the trailhead indicated there was a 1 mile walk to meet to the connecting point for be other trail. Note DO NOT GO TO THE BEACH TRAIL! There is no indicator where you can connect to the other trail. Follow the dunes trail.

All in all it was very beautiful! Just know what your getting into before you go.

Nice trail. Brings you through forested area and then opens up to dunes. It ends when it meets up with Carter Dunes Trail.

My wife and I went on this hike today (the last day of 2015) and the weather was cold but absolutely stunning. It's just a little less than three miles to the edge of the lake and the highest point is about half way when you do the out-and-back hike. We hiked on a beautiful day following a lot of coastal rain and I was very pleased that the condition of the trail was good. We only had one place that was a little mucky.

If you like hiking in the forest, this is your hike. The ocean was visible in a couple of places but the true feature of this hike is the forest. We live nearby and we didn't even know about this trail until today and we are definitely going to do this trail again.

My wife and I are hobby hikers and the elevation climb was a good workout for us. This trail is NOT designed for those in wheelchairs, scooters, or other rolling assistance devices. This trail is not paved.

This was an interesting hike. I wish I could use more detail but this was a while ago. I just remember pulling into a parking lot and starting our hike, and getting lost. We were trying to get to the beach. It turned out that we went into the wrong enterence. We finally got on the right trail which was in a forest setting but eventually lead out to the dunes. It was really awesome actually.. We got the the beach, and there was hardly anyone out there. We set up a blanket and started to relax until we noticed fresh mountain lion tracks right next to us. It was fun.
