This is one of 3 trails starting at the cape lookout trailhead parking lot. The hike starts to the right. It’s an immediate decend, but you are walking thru forestry and lots of roots. That means coming back be prepared for a slight incline to return. Halfway thru the trail you will reach a suspension bridge and after that nice coastal views as you reach the beach. The tide pools are fun to explore and we found about 6 full sand dollars. This trail is definitely way less trafficked than the cape lookout hike.

Great hike, first .75 miles is descent, so that’s what you have to climb to get back out, but it’s not too steep. Lots of tree roots to navigate, little bit of mud, but no bugs and great weather. Cool suspension bridge mid trail and the beach at the end was lovely. The crowds were all on the cape lookout trail, so I encountered maybe ten groups on my entire out and back, and that’s on a Sunday in July. Would definitely do this trail again!

On a sunny day, this trail is magical.

Wonderful beach at the bottom with sandy beach and tide pools. Great views. Lots of roots and switchbacks.

Great hike. If you’re reasonably fit and keep a good pace you should be done in ~2hours with some wandering on the beach. Loved the forest portion and then a nice beach. No one around today so it was great to have it all to myself. Two dogs, navigated it well. Pretty muddy though for the first 3/4 if a mile.

There are two other trails available at the same spots (south trail and cape lookout I believe) Beautiful scenery at the end, I recommend to visit this place when it has been sunny and dry for a few days, because the trail gets pretty muddy at some spots and in addition, wear the boots that would have a good traction

Beautiful hike down. Only saw one other group on the trail when I went on a Saturday in January. It was muddy, but that is expected on a hike in winter in Oregon. Be sure to pace yourself. It’s easy to zoom on down and walk a couple of miles down the beach before you remember you have to the the switchbacks back up :)

Combine this trail with the Cape Lookout trail to get about 10 miles and 2,500' in elevation gain. The trails on the Oregon Coast are beautiful. Just look at the photos and get out there.

While hiking the Three Capes section of the Oregon Coast trail I had hoped to cross the mouth of Sand Lake at low tide. No way unless it is 2 ft minus tide. Instead I found a trail around the south side of the lake, which is a beautiful estuary. Whalen Island is peninsula in the lake. When I came to sandlake road, I turned north and walked 1/2 mile to Whalen Island. Could have been a great campsite. Osprey and Blue Herons abound. There is no OHV traffic on Whalen Island or along the the south side of Sand Lake

A pretty tough trail coming straight back up from the beach, but it wasn't very busy and it was a nice beach.

Check the tide schedules and approach this trail toward low tide for the best experience. I hiked the Cape Lookout trail first (approx 1:15) so that I could come back to this one for a swim break. It was the most refreshing invigorating thing I've ever had the pleasure of doing mid-hike. Low tide leaves many tide pools and wildlife on the beach. The views are spectacular! Also had a very close encounter with deer on the way back up.
The steep grades can be hard on the knees going down and tough on the stamina going up. Pace yourself for your fitness level.

Beautiful hike! The elevation is not accurate on the description. I believe it is half of what it states, probably around 1100ft.

The vistas were not as dramatic as the cape trail, but for awhile we were the only folks on the beautiful beach that is this hike's destination. This beautiful short hike is memorable for the way it takes one into what seems like another world.

It was busy at noon on a Friday, but that didn't hinder our experience. Its a 800 ft hike up switchbacks on the way back though, which I would've preferred to start with and then go back down, but thats obviously not an option when you're hiking to a beach. Be careful with your ankles on the roots! Pup pulled me over a couple of them...

Definitely all soft sand trail and lots of horse poop. Awful for a walk. Was mad I left the beach as its way easier and prettier to walk on.

One of the most crowded places you could ever find. Parking lot full at 9 am Thursday morning. "Moderately Trafficked" is ultra false.

Nice family friendly hike! Enjoyed the scenery and lack of other people!

It was a sandy trail that took a bit of effort. It had a varied interesting habitat. It had a lot of mosquitos though. It was worth the walk.

Thought there would be more vista points but the stars of the show were the giant trees and overgrowth on the trail. Some muddy spots. Overall, a great elevation focused coastal trail!

Great hike today. Hard on knees going down hill, and a good workout coming back up. Took us 70 minutes each way. Wonderful beach with tide pools at bottom.

Beautiful lush forest ending with an amazing beach. We saw a bald eagle over looking the beach. Hike up hill is challenging if you are not in pretty good shape.

I enjoyed this nifty trail. It's all downhill for the first leg, which brings you to the beach. The ocean waves call your name the whole way down. Then you have a somewhat challenging uphill climb back to the parking lot.

Stunning views of the ocean! Still a little muddy in spots and a little more difficult than I anticipated but a very pretty hike. The trail ends at a beautiful secluded beach with very few people on it.

Surprisingly great - easy - hike. Nice view of Sandlake and native Oregon coast Forestlands. Take some snacks and picnic on the sand. Only downside is the sound of off-road vehicles at the nearby Sandlake sand dunes.
