pretty nice trail, the walking trail is only 5 miles the mountain bike trail is 8.5 miles! just a heads up about the distance, the trails are marked but they were hard to understand since the map at the trail head did not show the mountain bike trail. the blue trail is for walking and red/ orange trail is for mountain bikes. the trail itself was nice they have recently put in several new bridges, the old ones looked very unsafe. we came across a few dozen trail runners and probably a dozen bikers on our trip. the lake was pretty busy being labor day weekend. there is a shooting range on site and it is a hunting area during hunting season so dogs may not be a good idea. I will be going back

Easy path to let dogs run while getting miles in. I very rarely see anyone here except a person or two fishing. Bug spray and a small stick to sweep away spider webs are suggested. I don’t know if you’re supposed to but walking the loop on the paths and levies between the fields adds variation to this out-and-back trail. I bet people and their dogs have been walking this trail for the better part of a century!

This short loop is a great add on to the Pickaway Trail!

This is a nice little path that is great for walking dogs. I recommend bug spray, hiking boots or good shoes, and pants. I enjoy walking with my pets!

I’m almost always the only person here. Nice views of the canal, farm fields, and a lake. Look for the osprey nests. Very easy walk.

Loved this hike. Brought my vizsla who loved it too- until the gun shots started( skeet shooting is guessing ). He grew accustomed to them after a while, but If you have a skittish pup I’d be hesitant.

This trail was pretty easy. Well marked in most places, but it got a little confusing when I came out in the campground. This time of year, there were some parts that were a little tricky to navigate—lots of mud, streams crossing the path, etc. but overall a nice little jaunt through the woods!

Hidden gem. My idea of hiking: primitive, but well- marked trail and few humans. Great view of lake for about half of the hike and some really cool geological features. The dogs loved it. There were gunshots fired, as we hiked during hunting season. Therefore, dogs were leashed. Would definitely return. The directions did not quite get me to the trailhead, but it was less than 0.5 mile away.

It's a good muddy trail today. The storms have not been good to the lake trail.

Hiked these trails today with my wife .A few things upset me a little! 1. Covered dog poop on trail with a big rock! 2. Thought world war 3 was goin on at the S>E> end of the lake! 3.Met hunters on the trail with guns. This is a beautiful place to relax and unwind. Just not today!!!!

Quaint trail for a very pleasant hike. No elevation change, well-worn, easy trail but with some really nice scenery. I stayed at the campground on the opposite side of the lake and literally started the trail from my camp site. Nice quick morning hike with dogs before hitting the road.

Amazing trail to hike with a lake view for the most part. Quiet difficult to run as the trail had a lot of tree roots above ground.

Nice trail for a quick hike! Please keep your pets on a leash,IT IS THE LAW! And if your to lazy to pick up the poo Please just kick it off the trail. Other than that there is a gun range on the south side of the lake. Should be no problems they shoot away from the trail! Been coming here for years no major problems...

1 mile yellow loop / 3.8 blue trail around the lake / 6 mileish orange trail that ends with an awkward squiggle to the side / shallow woodland area lake with picnic areas and a couple tiny islands in the middle

Great trail to hike. Annoying people with unleashed dogs. Bring a stick just in case.

I agree with the other reviews on the pleasantness and ease of the <5 mile loop. That loop is the official trail and it is marked with blue blazes. What I enjoy about hiking at Hargus is finding the unofficial, "hidden" red (orange) paths. Their total length is about 6 miles around the lake. If you include the unofficial, wooded path hidden in the official loop west, southwest of the dam, it approaches 7 miles. The red trail has more secluded natural beauty, especially the section that runs east of the campground. I love letting my dogs run free on the red paths. There are spring fed creeks in addition to the lake where they can cool off. Good luck finding the red blazes and if you do, take along a stick with which to brush away the spider webs from the trails.

When I want to get out, and don't feel like traveling far, this is a good 5 mile walk. Trail isn't difficult at all, couple of smallish hills and there is a section along the eastern part of the trail that gets pretty muddy when it rains. There are also some stretches of the trail that are exposed to the sun with no cover, so plan for that.

One thing to note - the local school kids like to use this trail for track practice, so you may seem them jogging around the lake.

There is a campground at the lake, and the fishing is decent, so if you want a quick and remote getaway it's not too bad.

I hiked this trail after all the rains in June. It was very muddy but that's to be expected. Nice rolling hills and views of the lake. We past 4 other people. I like the quietness.
