Pretty sure this trail is closed now.

Good trail, and in many places I would rate it higher, but it is too close to world class hiking to do again.

Easiest 1,000 feet in elevation gain you could ask for. Nice views north and south at the summit. Many recognizable peaks...Mt Mitchell, Grandfather Mtn, and the Boone ski mtns. Can also see Mt Rogers from the north view (highest peak in VA). 4 mile round trip.

Very well maintained trail with sweeping long range views at the summit. Definitely worth the effort.
I am 77 and would rate easy to moderate.

This about as easy as 1000 feet of elevation can be. Just a nice gentle climb on a smooth trail which never gets steep due to the switchbacks. Coming down it's almost impossible to stop from just running. I went up the day after Hurricane Michael pulled through leaving behind crystal clear views and crisp fall temperatures (in the 40s and very windy!). A good number of people out on the trail, although it seemed like I saw them in bunches either at the top or groups of separate hikers over a half mile on the day down. Ran into a ranger on a couple of occasions which is always nice to see.

To make a little more of a hike, you can do a loop of about a mile before going up the Elk Knob Summit Trail. It would be nice if a loop trail to connect over to the Backcountry trail were in place to make more of a hike.

Loved this hike! It's all uphill switchbacks to the summit, but it's gradual enough to enjoy for two miles. The mile markers every quarter mile are a nice reminder of your progress! The trail is well-maintained and shaded in trees until the last quarter mile or so, at that point it opens up, gets a bit overgrown, and the bugs showed up. You can hang out at the North or South summit viewpoints once you reach the top. They're close enough that you should definitely see both, but I think the North is a more impressive view to take in. We actually enjoyed the view and weather from the 1-mile marker perhaps better than the top - it was shaded, no bugs, and had a nice breeze. Certainly worth the trip regardless of your preference for a 2 or 4-mile roundtrip hike!

Well maintained trail! Gradual uphill incline makes it a pretty easy hike. Beautiful views at the top. No tree coverage so very hot in the summer.

About 4 miles r/t. Beautifully maintained and well-marked. A couple of 40-somethings and their 6 yr. old dog did just fine. We were huffin' a bit going up, but the view is absolutely worth it!s

Super easy walk....I wouldn't really call this a hike. However, the artwork created by locals and App State students is really enjoyable. We were there on a Tuesday, so I can't gauge how highly trafficked it is on a weekend, but it was very peaceful and quiet when we were there - nothing but the sounds of the wind and birds.

This is a moderately strenuous, very well-maintained trail with fantastic views at both the 1-mile mark and at the summit (North and South views). This a great trail for some cardio and miles, but not technical or overly long. The mile markers are new and the trail is clearly marked with blue diamonds. I was impressed by the lack of litter along the trail. As an aside, the Ranger was extremely nice and gave us lots of helpful information about the park. This is the first time we've hiked this trail, but will definitely be back!

I have hiked this trail several times over the last 2 years and it’s a good hike. However, the trail is no longer maintained. We also had trespassing threats on our cars when we returned from the hike. I do not recommend this hike. The trail is closed and hikers are not welcome.

Great hike with great views!

The trail is well maintained and well marked. The views at the top were weak at best. There is very little space for multiple hikers and the flies/bees are out of control.

Awesome trail

Beautiful shady well maintained trail with gorgeous views at the top.

one of the best in area. definitely no crowds. parts are challenging to follow and some scrambling with steep drop offs.

Really nice hike with well maintained trail. We took our five year old, and still managed to start and finish in 2 hours, with about 15 mins at the top and 1846272 little “breaks” for him along the way. :)

Very nice hike with frank from Florida. Great view at the top and good shade on trail. There is a loop trail that is great for young grandkids. It’s about a mile. We use this a lot with the little ones.

this was a great trail to hike with our 4 kids (9 yes old and younger). it was just the right length and the scenery was gorgeous. really well kept trail and I loved the fact that there were mile posts along the trail. I would highly recommend this trail!

Great trail! Perfect if you're looking for an easy trail with beautiful views and a variety of terrains. 2 amazing overlooks at the top and another great one half way up at the 1 mile mark.

Only downside is if your looking for a longer or technically challenging trail this is not the trail but it is perfect for a short afternoon hike or if you have young children.

This is a beautiful trail. The understory and dappled shade gave this trail a golden green glow that was truly enchanting and was only beat by the amazing views at the top. We packed lunch and ate it at the southern viewpoint where the temperatures were mild with a constant breeze. Having just driven up from the 91 degree piedmont area, the cooler temperatures (74 degrees) were a welcome change and made the steep climb up much more bearable.

Awesome trail! Lots of benches and large rocks for rests on the way up. Beautiful views at top!

This is, hands down, the most beautiful trail I have ever been on start to finish. The trail is well maintained, but more importantly the forest surrounding you all the way up is just breathtaking. After the .5 mike mark, the trees are smaller and there is a lot of bright green undergrowth, creating a “fairy tale forest” vibe. Unfortunately I hit the trail early and the fog was too dense to get any great views at the top, but it was awesome to sit in the silence and watch/feel the clouds move over you. Highly recommend.

I don't think I've given a five-star yet but I'm doing so for this moderately easy day hike. The Park Service has done a fantastic job maintaining this trail. Kudos for getting gravel up that far! There was one section that was washed out pretty bad but they get a pass on that given the 20+ inches of rain they had there last week. Shaded trail the whole way to the summit with a great overlook at around 5,084' and great views from both the north and south overlooks on the summit. It says 1.9 miles to the summit which would mean 3.8 round-trip. I had it at 4.1 miles all-together. Well worth the trip if you haven't done this one yet.

One of my favorite trails in the Blue Ridge. Went early, 9am, and had the trail to ourselves on a Saturday, until we started down. Maintenance on the trail is excellent and we had no problems, even after the recent heavy rains. Stretches of easy, moderate, and strenuous makes this a very interesting trail. Some of the best views anywhere and today we were not disappointed!

I loved this trail!! The views from the top and as you are hiking up are amazing!! We thought we were going up the wrong trail at first. Don’t let the gate fool you, just climb over it! The majority of this trail is all up hill...but worth it!

This was a great moderate and fairly short hike. We went on a day where there was a lot of cloud cover and the trail has a lot of trees covering it anyway so the temperature was perfect. There’s three viewing areas on the trail, one of which is halfway through the hike which creates a nice place to rest. It’s not a difficult hike and it’s not very long but it’s still nice to have a place to sit and a view to look at. The top has two viewing areas, both of which were covered by clouds when we made it to the top but I imagine it’s an amazing view when the cloud are gone. Would love to go and hike it again when it’s a little more clear outside.

I wish all trails could be maintained in this manner, my hats off to the crew who put this trail in and maintain it on an ongoing basis. It's still early Spring in higher elevations there were no leaves on the trees, giving up great views of the forest floor. The view at the one mile marker is almost as nice as the summit and its great for picture taking. The very small gift shop at the entrance to the park has nice hooded jackets at great prices (just in case you forgot to plan for possible rain).
