I did this hike in October with my dog. it was in the 40's and very windy, there was still a little ice on higher elevations so I'm glad I had his boots to tgo on him. It's one of the best hikes I've done as far as scenic views and lesser difficulty. It can get crowded with other day hikers but be selective in the day of week you go and that will help.
I loved this hike and will do it again, with my dog of course.

only 4 stars because of the number of day hikers.

4 adults, 6 kids, 1 infant. Great short hike with a small dense forest and breathtaking views. We all really enjoyed it.

The trail markings were excellent and so was trail condition (some thinning was needed and was being done). We went out in the fog, we hit all the balds, but visibility was next to nothing. Not the hikes fault, all Mother Nature. We started at Carvers Gap and went to Yellow Mountain Gap (the barn camping area). We tented in the field with a few other hikers. Best tent area I have been to in a while. Water was nearby, but don’t forget your filter, you have to get it out of a creek. The hike out the next day was spectacular! Very little clouds. We even crossed paths with a very large and curious black bear.

NOTE: This is the other side of the AT away from the balds. Features: High Knob, Cloudland Hotel remains, High Bluffs, and also the rhododendron gardens if you take a detour before the bluffs. It was hard to find the AT from Carvers Gap. We just walked in the woods passed the restroom and found it. luckily most everyone was hiking the balds on the AT in the opposite direction. It was very lightly trafficked until you we got to the Cloudland hotel where people can get on from the parking lot. The highest point on Roan Mountain is on High Knob at the AT shelter big rocks before the hotel remains. Very well maintained trail but not clear when you are at High Knob. The High Bluff overlook was stunning.

Gorgeous views the entire way. Super easy trail to follow, right before Jane Bald it is a bit of a climb. Lots of people on this trail though.

one of the most beautiful backpacking trips ever!

Great 360 degree views from the balds. Three unique surroundings- balds, thick wooded areas, and old forest.

This trail was filled with treasures! From the wildflowers to the 360 view, loved it!

Nice relatively easy hike up to Roan High Bluff platform and back to Carvers Gap (7.1 miles). In the clouds most of the hike but they did clear for about 30 sec at the top so you actually got a quick view of the valley. Will do again in the winter when there are open views and a lot less people. Carvers Gap parking was full and cars lined the road at 0915 in the morning on a cloudy Tuesday morning. Fortunately 98% of the crowd were hiking the bald side of the AT.

One of my favorite places. A beautiful hike for all seasons.

I love coming here.

Great hike, 360 views for most of the trail. A must hit for SB6k.

A very short trail straight to the top of round bald. Very easy for children! Has a magnificent view once you summit. Bathrooms Are also easily accessible.

Absolutely incredible trail. Stunning views, nice easy hike, and well marked paths. Incredible place to watch the sun rise and set. The wind along the bald can get pretty nasty, especially if a bit cold out, and watch out for the rain. The trails will turn into small streams. Plenty of parking at the trail-head, and one of the cleanest outhouses I've ever seen.

Easy hike and beautiful views. March 12 snow on the ground and met an AT trail through hiker that started February 20th and had a rough 4 weeks so far.

Perfect hike for any level hiker. The elevation can be tough at first. But your body adjust. Epic views in all directions. When the rhododendrons blooms it’s one of top spots on East Coast. Photographers travel from around the world for this event.

These are some of the best views on the East Coast!! One of the best trails ever. Great spot for Astrophotography and camping.

Within the first couple hours of the hike, there are beautiful wide open views of the mountains however, my friend and I started quite early in the morning and it was so foggy we couldn't see anything till the hike back. Some parts are quite muddy, but the red barn shelter at the end also has some great views!

One of my favorite hikes! Nice rolling trail, gorgeous views almost the entire time. Going across the balds with good visibility is just breathtaking. Be prepared for snow and ice from late fall to late spring- the elevation makes a huge difference! Crampons can be a game changer in the cold months.

We didn’t actually do the whole hike due to time constraints, but going up and down the balds was cool and the views were unusually wide open for Eastern hiking. It was pretty muddy for much of the trail. But the views really were spectacular!

Very easy, short from the parking lot. Great views! We took a picnic and ate lunch at the top. Lots of foot traffic for a Thursday in October.

Love this trail! Definitely feels like more than 2.6 miles some days, but it's always beautifully taken care of, people are always friendly and the views are just out of this world!

Smells like Christmas.

CARVERS GAP is voted the most beautiful view along the AT by visitors year round ! The fog rolls in and out like a dragon causing you to feel like you are in the moors of Scotland. Whether you go for a day hike or make it an overnight backpacking and camping venture it is a hike you will remember always in your heart.

Don't stop at Jane Bald! Press on and keep going to the top of Grassy Ridge Bald. It is absolutely gorgeous up there. The entire hike was filled with nonstop views and the immanent aroma of the spruce-fir forest. Nothing beats this place.

Absolutely beautiful hike. 360 views.

The views from Jane Bald are spectacular. It is the middle of the three Roan Mountain balds. This is one of my favorite hikes, and one that I keep coming back to!

It is not hyperbole to say that this is one of my favorite spots anywhere. It also is the place that inspired me to become a serious hiker. It's visually stunning no matter when you visit (except for that one time in the cold fog, rain and wind...but it was still exciting to be there). I have been to Roan Mountain five times in the last couple years. I included a few photos from each hike to show the changing scenery. No matter what the main goal is for each trip, I make sure to include the short hike up to Round Bald. At just over a mile and a half round trip and 300 feet of elevation gain, this has to be one of the greatest small effort/high reward hikes. Often the most difficult part is trying to find a place to park in Carvers Gap. It is usually a good idea to get an early start. Besides, there are few better places to see a sunrise. And then you can keep hiking for as long as you want!
