Combined this trail with the Cascades Trail. Parked at the Cascades because there is a restroom. Walked out and back to the Tompkins Knob parking lot. The cabin, spring house and old church building were of interest. The trail itself is very easy with little elevation change and a nice walk in the woods below the Parkway. There is even a bench to sit and rest at about half way. Agree with other reviewers that it is best combined with the Cascades Trail.

short, sweet, and nice way to stretch your legs.

Easy trail for someone who wants a short hike or in my case learning to hike again. A couple places to rest. Very peaceful and mostly flat.

Cool, short hike. Old structures still standing from early settlers. Recommend taking the connecting trail to cascades.

Would only recommend if you go all the way to the Cascades. We connected two short trails (Tompkins Knob and Cascades) to make a nice little hour long hike. The Cascades were gorgeous all frozen over in early January. Liked adding Tompkins on just to add a little to the hike. Very easy hike for all ages and ability levels.

The Cascades are the highlight here though. So if you just want a really short journey, drive a mile up the road and visit the Cascades from their own parking lot.

Great spot for viewing the sunrise on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not much of a “trail,” though.

amazing sunset/moonrise views

easy and we'll maintained, however the best view is in the parking lots

Very easy walk and well maintained. Too close to road for my liking and not much to see along the way except a few old buildings.

A relatively flat, wooded trail. Definitely don't miss out on continuing on to Cascade Falls.

Easy walk up the hill from the Blue Ridge Parkway overlook for a very nice view of the surrounding mountains.

By itself, a nice short walk in the woods. No views and it can be noisy, as it follows the Blue Ridge Parkway closely (but mostly below and out of sight). But there is a picturesque old log cabin. And the trail works well with the Cascades Falls Trail if you would like to add an extra 1.2 miles to your hike.
