HikingGreat!

Good for a cardio hike. Popular with trail runners and mountain bikers. Nice and steady climb, nothing much to see. Good if you just need to get outside and exercise. Parking a breeze.

I always enjoy hiking and I thought they were some nice aspects to this trail but it was rather disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend going in the middle of the summer because the trail tends to get very muddy, and it’s not very scenic. There are plenty of planks to help you cross some of the deeper areas but be prepared to hit lots of slick muddy spots. The upper Falls is quite a trek for as short as it is and the payoff isn’t reate a tthat great. The falls themselves are a little bit underwhelming. It is pretty and fun to look at but you can get a lot better pay off on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a lot less effort. I took the loop back down an ended up at the lower Falls which is the best part. The trail is poorly marked in spots and there are multiple places to go that are actually dead ends so it’s best to download a map or to at least get a close look when you’re at lower elevation and actually have a signal. This place gets extremely crowded even during the weekdays so arrive early or get there late. All in all, it’s about 4 miles to do the loop and both falls and I would rate it is easy to moderate. The only reason that it’s moderate when I took it is because it was so muddy and hard to find the trails. This is best done in the fall and it is rather easy if the trail is dry.

We got there at 9 on Saturday. It wasn’t crowded. We hiked to the covered bridge and back staying by the river the whole time because the kids liked it. Took a 4 and 6 year old. I liked that there were a lot of good places to stop, play in the water and have a snack. By the time we left at noon, it was too crowded for my comfort level.

Very flat but shaded and cool. Some very muddy spots. Nice walk by the river and connects to the Art Loeb trail. Parking either at Lowe’s or at the other end.

Lots of people before the trail, but once on actual trail less crowds. Overall great hike and cardio.

Very nice trail overall, so I would recommend for most people! Well-marked with blue circles throughout. Hard to get a good view of the waterfall, but the loop hike was worth it alone anyways. Half the loop meanders through the books and I would recommend this side first. The second half walks alongside the creek where many people wade through the water.

We had a fabulous time. Brought the dog along. We showed up at 8:30 and there were only a few cars. By the time we finished, parking lot was full and folks were waiting for spots (get there early). We started at the trail head furthest from the bathrooms. It was our first time and we made a couple wrong turns, but the trees, trails, river was awesome. There are a couple of off shoot trails that are enjoyable but not specifically part of the blue blaze trails, so pay close attention. Definitely recommend downloading the offline map and using GPS if you’re new to the trails. Ended at lower falls and enjoying getting in the water. Will definitely be back again.

Amazing hike with family. we only did the lower falls but we were able to swim a bit. note that the water was ice cold and barely tolerable. esp. for little ones. - however the hike was so much fun - variety of trees, walking paths, creeks, etc. it was crowded at the falls and on the bridges/ stairs but most people stepped aside or were wearing masks. I highly recommend starting at the trail head on the other side of the parking lot from the bathrooms. this way you will end up at the lower falls as the end of the hike for a refreshing spritz.

Loved the first 1/3. Because of all the rain the middle 1/3 was a miserable muddy bog. Last 1/3 was really cool. Sandy then dirt path. Beautiful flora.

Nicely maintained trail. More of a nature walk than a hike. Almost entirely shaded other than short downhill towards lake.

Rainy day hiking made the wooden stairs/ramps portion of the falls less than spectacular, but hey, that’s nature. Just had to watch footing on the wet boards. The trail to the upper section was beautiful, yet demanding near the top. The amount of elevation you work up in the very last section to the falls is a great payoff however. Upper section to the falls had several small water crossings and was fairly muddy... but it also rained all day. As others have said, there aren’t a lot of trail markings on that section, however we had no problems staying along the trail and working our way through.

Beautiful falls. Great wide trails most of the way, but I would not consider this an “easy” hike. Lots of elevation gain and steep areas. Just be prepared for a workout.

HikingGreat!

What a great trail! We arrived around 11am on a Saturday and the lot was full (it was almost around 8:30am when we drove by) so get there early or you’ll be road parking. We did the full loop and Upper Falls. It was good exercise, relatively easy to keep on trail, and not too muddy. As some have mentioned and as indicated on the map, if you are doing Upper Falls, there is a fork near a creek about 1/2 into the hike. Take a left and go over the creek. Secondly, make sure to climb all the way to Upper Falls. There is a false ridge that many people stopped at Nessie’s climbing all the way up.

Takes finding the right spot to make this trail worth it. Arrived at 9:15 a.m. and the lower parking lot was 4-5 spots away from max capacity. Trail is fun and challenging. If you're not used to hiking in the mountains, the steep incline will take you by surprise. Avoid it altogether. Stick to the first leg of the trail, before the incline. Find your own cove and defend it. Invaders will be there by 11 a.m. to take it. Trip up to the staircase that leads to main triple falls platform not worth it. Photos online make it seem like you can swim at the base. Nope. Don't know if it was a high-water day but you're standing in a 40x50 foot patch of rock with about two dozen others around you. Minimal masks.
