This is a wonderful trail filled with history and nature. We saw four species of snake and several species of lizard. An Eastern Box Turtle with a bright orange head was the highlight of the trail. The trail itself starts out as a boardwalk that leads to a pier overlooking Phelps Lake. It then runs through Somerset Place, an antebellum plantation with several outbuildings, including replica slave quarters. There is a visitor’s center in one of the outbuildings that is worth the stop. Going past the large plantation mansion the trail passes through woods before coming to another boardwalk leading to a pier with another great view of the lake. The wildlife we found coupled with the history made this a five star trail for me.

This fairly short and very easy trail led to a beautiful view of the lake. We watched the sunset over the lake and it was absolutely gorgeous. The campsite was very nice as well.

Very nice campground. Campsites are relatively private and spaced so neighbors aren't too close. Interesting historical preservation of a pre-civilwar plantation. Educational and peaceful experience.

easy hike. beautiful. historical. will do again when it's not 17 degrees windchill. thoroughly enjoyed!
