The Scuppernong River can be accessed at two locations:
1 - The visitor center in Columbia at a nice launch with plenty of parking. Here the river is wide and you will share it with power boats.
2 - A boat launch off of Main Street at Creswell (aka Spruill's Bridge Rd). Here there is plenty of parking and a soft launch for canoes and kayaks. The river is much narrower here and you will see plenty of eagles, osprey and other wildlife. Going east at the 2.2 mi point two canals branch off of the river and go south to drain Phelps Lake. The larger is called the Industrial Canal and was used in the past for transportation of lumber and other goods. It's an interesting side trip. Going west for 2.5 mi will lead you to the bridge at Cherry Rd. I haven't gone past this point so I can't comment further on this route.
