Nice, quiet trail in nature preserve. Plenty of interesting plants, bugs and butterflies. Would recommend for a shorter, flat hike.

Perfect for the Charlotte area! Nice pine trees and a few lakes, be careful with the bikers but overall awesome!

Mountain bikingGreat!

Rode this trail and added Clarks Creek Greenway to it. Greenway was great, even on an 85+ degree day due to all the shade.

Moderate/varied elevations make it a good workout for your buns. I can hike this with the dog while my husband bikes. Pass by small lake and smaller pond but only one or two spots for the dog to get near for water when leashed. Fully shaded which is what I like. Seems to always have a fair number of people on it. Porta-a-johns and picnic table at trail head.

The guides on the trail didn’t match the map, so it was difficult to figure out that right way to go. We ended up cutting it short.

Really nice bike ride . I have a road bike with gravel tires and it was sufficient for the trail

WalkingGreat!

My favorite go-to spot! I appreciate that it’s not completely paved. There’s not a lot of parking but I’ve never seen it packed. It’s a great loop for those who get out every day or first timers!

Nice secluded lightly trafficked trail. You get road and airplane noise at spots. The trail is not well marked. There are trees and shade on the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the trail. The All Trails map is a bit off. There are two left turns toward the northern road. Take the last one. When you get to the picnic tables, turn left. It’s mostly all woods from that point. From there, you’ll walk a ways. Take a left from the two lane trail to the one lane trail. It’s overgrown, but it’s the correct trail. You’ll wind through the woods and end up back at the trail head.

Lots of roots and definitely way more fun for the experienced rider. Too hilly for me since I’m only an advanced beginner. Was fun during some parts. I would definitely come here for the hiking next time and after.

I started the trail at the parking lot by the fishing pier. I planned on completing a few of the trails this morning but woke up with a kink in my knee . I was hoping I could walk it off but my knee had other ideas . I started on the Kingfisher trail and ended up cutting back through the Shady Hollow trail to return to the parking lot. McDowell Nature Preserve trails are always well kept with staff usually visible during visits. The trail was pretty busy today (Sunday) with most people observing social distancing guidelines. The bathrooms were open and parking was available early in the day. Trails are near Lake Wylie and there’s plenty of opportunity to cop a seat and watch marine traffic. Always a good hike and one of Charlotte’s favorite family destinations.

Pretty nice, quick trail that you can do in an hour. 90% of it is in the woods so it’s fairly shady. Like others have said, there are points that are a little confusing because the trail intersects with a disc golf course. So some paths lead to a new disc golf hole while others keep you on the trail, and it’s hard to differentiate between the two.
