The trail is maintained great. I would not say this is an easy trail though. It is fairly steep. The view is nice but would be much better if the tower was unlocked.

Whew this was maybe the the toughest trail I've ever done. It's dark in that forest. I can imagine Hansel and Gretel sitting there waiting for their parents to come back for them. It rained part of the trip but it was refreshing not annoying. The path is rocky and covered with tree roots. The views up at the parking lot are fantastic. I only did half this trail, I got picked up at the top.

Park at Green Knob Overlook at milepost 350.4 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Trailhead is north about 100 yards on the opposite side of the road.

Most amazing view in North Carolina! I went a few months back in February and was not disappointed! It was windy and cold the day my family went but on the trail there was plenty of shielding from trees and bushes and once at the top it was warm anyway. During the winter months there is close to no traffic at all we saw two other people and that was it. Moderate trail would no doubt hike again!

Love this little place... been several times now ...

Did the loop. Nice walk. Some people might have an issue with crawling over the rocks on the top. Views are great.

Great trail! Steep for half of it but well worth it at the top.

I've been able to complete most of this trail 2 times and while the views on the way up are slightly obstructed, you cannot beat the experience in terms of terrain, ecosystem changes as you move further up the trail, and the remoteness mid-mountain. Awesome experience!

Short but steep and rocky awesome view kinda hard too find

I have now hiked this trail 28 times. Looking forward to my 29th and 30th as my goal was 30. It is a good workout and there are two major water sources along the way. The trail is well maintained. You won't find many decent views of the surrounding mountains or the valley below. The Higgins Bald Trail has a waterfall but it is only decent after a heavy rainfall.

This trail is so worth your time!! If you don’t look carefully you can miss the start. I recommend starting right as you get onto the NPS service road just to the right about 30 feet onto the road. It’s a stiff hike up but really cool scenery. 95% of the entire hike is woods with one side of the loop being completely different from the other. Then as you get to the top it’s like the entire world opens up with absolutely stunning views. I’m only more upset I forgot to hit stop on the recording of my hike with pictures so that didn’t record. The trail is still relatively easy to follow.

Just an average hike, in my opinion. There was a nice little stream near the top, but other than that it was just another walk in the woods (typical Eastern hike) but without any great overlooks.
It is well marked and probably better in the winter when there are no leaves.
We did detour initially to a waterfall near the campground and that was pretty cool.

The trail was marked well with lots of water. However, bear wires are needed at Commissary Ridge Camp Ground. Ranger’s were beyond helpful. Recommend Yancy Transportation for trail head drop off and pickup from Burnsville.

Maple Camp Bald has great views!

The trail itself is excellently maintained by NC high peaks and recently re-done. The forest itself is OK, but the main goal, the fire tower, is locked so the view is very limited. The tower looks new and in very good shape. I have no idea why it is locked. It is a pity.

Bob.... how long does it take to summit and what time to start from trail head? I want to hike this soon but don't want to hike back at dark.

I have hiked this trail 23 times from Black Mountain Campground to the summit and back to the campground. After a good rainfall the Higgins Bald Trail has a decent waterfall on the left.
