Green everywhere! One of my favorite trails any time of year, except winter. Can be icy and muddy in the Spring so wear shoes with good traction. Short trail to/from parking lot at Mt. Mitchell to/from the summit trail and outlook.

Easy short hike to a beautiful waterfall

Pavement will be under your feet the entire way. The distance, according to a sign at the end of the parking lot, is 275 yards to the top. The view was great April 28, 2018 because of no fog or cloud cover unlike when I hiked the Mt. Mitchell trail a few years ago. I did this one because my son is too young to do the hard trail and I wanted him to stand on the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. The only reason I gave it a four star rating is because it's more of a walk and not a hike.

Our favorite short hike in WNC - takes about 20 minutes. Lots of shade through this coniferous forest. Start at either the lower parking lot or near the Mount Mitchell summit just on the left as you pass the small education building.

great falls.. easy trek

Located at MP349.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, there is a winding park road that will lead you up to a large parking area within a very short walk to the top. The weather at the summit is significantly colder than at lower elevations so bring a jacket. The cement trail to the summit (ADA accessible) is pretty steep but leads to the observation area that affords a 360* panorama and has detailed signs at the north, east, south, and west faces showing the names of all of the distant peaks. The grave of Elisha Mitchell, who surveyed the mountain, is displayed right in front of the observation platform and is composed of the same ornamental stonework. This is an excellent place to visit when traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway and is great for children.

These falls are accessible by finding your way to the Black Mountain Campground. Park before you get to the bridge on your left. You'll see 3 billboards at the parking area. The trail behind the billboards goes to the River Loop Trail and the Green Ridge to the Green Knob Firetower. Don't take those trails. Walk across the road and across the bridge over the river into the campground. Hang a left to enter the trail systems. You'll see three trail signs. Don't get on the Mt. Mitchell trail. Get on the Briar Bottom Trail. After .10 of a mile you'll take a right a bit parallel to the river and then to the falls.

The view from the bottom is beautiful enough. Still take the trail along the right side to the top of the falls. The view is even more spectacular. There are actually two trails to the top of the falls.

The trail to the base of the falls is basically a gravel road, and so it's very easy for reasonably mobile people The falls itself is awesome! There are paths to the top of the falls with several places along the way to climb out onto the rocks for unique perspectives. These trails traverse roots and slick rocks that require more attention to detail. Plenty of good photo opportunities at Roaring Fork. Well worth the trip.

Very easy and enjoyable

Very low traffic and the kids loved it! The pictures do not do justice for these falls!

Great base camp. Plenty of trails to hike and even has some bike trails.

Nice nature walk. Usually do it every time we go up to Mt. Mitchell. The trees are beautiful. Everything is always so green in there during the summer.

Trail is kinda of hard to find. (GPS took me about 1/2 mile away to a different place.) I had to stop and ask for directions. After you find the trail though it's a great, quick hike. Falls are beautiful.

Easy short trail with a beautiful cascading fall. Cool water to play in. The sound of the fall is soothing. Bring water shoes and clothes you can get wet.

Awesome trail for the whole family, beautiful views from the observaion deck, plenty of places to step aside and take a break on the way up.

1 mile round trip, decently flat with some roots.
Ideal for children and pets and the reward is worth the effort.
For the best view of the falls, some work is required directly below them.
This trail will not be friendly to those who can not climb small slopes.

Quick, easy hike. Not a lot of traffic. Definitely worth the trip!

This trail gives you an easy hike to go along with the short paved walk to the summit viewing area. I started from the Balsam Nature trailhead in the lower level of the parking lot. It was enjoyable seeing and learning about the Canadian-like spruce-fir forest. And I got to finish the nearly mile long loop by including the amazing views from the highest point east of the Mississippi River.

The view from Mitchell is outstanding on a clear day, but to get there really can't be called a hike. It's a .5 mile paved trail that leads from the parking lot to the viewpoint. It is fairly steep.

The trailhead is available if you drive through the camping area and you actually find it and able to park there. Alternatively you can park outside the camping area where the trailheads cross and plenty of parking space available. Then you walk to the trailhead through the river loop trail (see my recording). The waterfall is pretty, but the forest a bit ruined along the trail.
