The first 2 miles up until the overlook were extremely boring, walk through an overgrown wooded forest with tons of bugs. After the overlook things picked up and i really enjoyed it. Overall a good hike, look out for wildlife, especially snakes. I would recommend going with somebody.

Great hike. Scramble is a bit tricky at parts but very fun. Did see a black bear on the trail at one point but it wasn't aggressive and we just moved along in the opposite direction.

As per other recent reviews, this trail has everything! The fire tower is closed due to COVID, but there are plenty of other highlights. The beaver dam was the highlight for us. The trail brings you right up close to this marvel of natural engineering. There’s a nice bit of scrambling as well, and the vista overlooking greenwood lake is a pleasant surprise. The old iron mining and smelting infrastructure is impressive and worth taking time to read about. Despite the full parking lot (we were lucky to find a spot when we arrived around 11:00), crowding was not so bad on the way up, and we hardly saw anyone after passing the vista. I think most families with kids opt for the lake loop. There were blessedly few mosquitoes in mid June, and the trail is well-marked. Markers are a little more sparse on the red/green/blue portion of the trail. Take particular care not to get turned around after the dam. The park ranger we spoke to was very friendly, and gave us a helpful overview and printed trail map before we disembarked. Though he estimated 7+ hours, my wife and I completed the trail in a little under 6, including lunch and snack breaks. I definitely agree with the assessment of the trail as “moderate”. All in all, a very rewarding, full day of hiking. Animal sightings included a deer, a wild turkey, one very fast salamander, and a huge eastern black racer.

Not for beginners I should say. Trail is a bit confusing. But overall the view and challenge was worth it!!! Great work out! One of my favorite hikes!

Definitely a nice place to stop if you’re in the area! Beautiful view and was happy there is a stream along part of the trail, because my dog likes to cool off in the water :) When I got there the lot was empty, which was good cause it is on the small side. Overall, good shorter trail.

Scramble

This hike has everything. Ruins, lake views, a rock scramble, a fire tower, beaver dam and beaver lodge! If you go counterclockwise and approach the fire tower from the south, you will be doing a rock scramble from the orange to the fire tower trail. The trail from the fire tower back to the visitor center is a gravel road with no scrambles. Overall this hike is moderate.

Many cool features on this hike: picturesque lake at the start and finish, some nice woods and streams, a steep section with fun scrambled, and a fire tower that was unfortunately closed due to COVID-19. The highlight is of course the view of Greenwood Lake from the overlook — absolutely stunning. Also plenty of parking and excellent bathroom facilities at the visitor center. As others have said, this was more of a moderate hike with some challenging sections than a difficult one.

Great trail. Has a bit of everything. Views, ruins, lakes, streams, rock scrambles, fire tower. Definitely more moderate than hard. Secret tip, do the loop clockwise. the park rangers send everyone up the orange trail and counterclockwise, not sure why. We took the red connector first and got most of the elevation gain out of the way right at the beginning on a fire road that ends at the fire tower then came down the rock scrambles everyone going counterclockwise were climbing. Watch for sunbathing Black Racers, they're non venomous but we saw a few that were 5 to 6 feet long. There's a lot of intersections with other trails. Download the map.

Beautiful views about 2.8 miles into the trail. Didn't get to finish the whole trail. About 3 miles into the trail, spotted a black bear sleeping. Other hikers passing by also passed this same bear multiple times- I was surprised the footsteps didn't wake him. Also saw a porcupine and many pretty flowers - so many strawberry bushes but they had just begun flowering - no fruit yet . The dirt path paving the trail was just a tad rocky so my ankles were a little sore after.

One of my favorite trails. The trail is well marked and very beautiful. The total length is on the long side and there are some scrambles, but I’d rate this moderate rather than difficult. Multiple pretty viewpoints. Only thing is that the loop can get a bit confusing as it intersects multiple other trails at this state park, so I’d download the AllTrails map layers before going so you can stay on trail.

Great hike! I would say this hike is more moderate in terms of difficulty. It was mostly flat with few inclines. But I enjoyed the view of the lake and seeing a few frogs and snakes. Just be aware of the ticks this time of year!

We parked at the bottom parking lot on top of the Mt. Crossed the street and walked to the right till we hit the trailhead on the road. Walked to the 1st rock formation which had an amazing view. Hung out there for a bit then walked to the next lower rock formation which didn’t really have a view. Then headed back. Nice quick hike maybe 2-3hours btw walking, stopping to look at the view & eating lunch & relaxing. I’d definitely go back.
