Great trail, easy to follow. Quite a few sections of elevation change and quite a few wet areas. There are plenty of campsites along the way, but you definitely have to plan ahead for where to stop and where to get water.

It took us 3.5 days to complete. Favorite spots were Olmstead Pond and High Falls.

what a wild hike from black bears to beautiful veiws

This was my first backpacking trip. Did this trip on a thursday friday overnight. We stayed overnight at high falls the first night and traveled in a counterclockwise direction. We relaxed at high falls after hiking from 10-3 the first day and then hiked to cat mtn and out the second day from 930-3 . The deer flies and mosquitos were pretty bad but not intolerable and although it has been a fairly dry summer there were some very wet spots, mostly on the western side due to beaver dams, so yes waterproof boots are a requirement. The fishing at high falls did not result in any catches.

probably my favorite hike I've done. very easy and flat until last half mile when it gets extremely steep. amazing views

My favorite trail so far in the ‘dacks. It has everything. Changing scenery, views, lake, different terrain, and it’s a loop! A few camp sites along the way, a couple lean-tos. High Falls is my favorite part... I’ve been there a few times and it never gets old. I don’t remember this trail being hard - maybe moderate in some parts. The hike to Cat Mt is fairly steep, but short. Definitely more enjoyable as at least a two nighter!

Good trail. Marked really well except for the detour around mile 1.5. Beaver dam covers the trail with an instant pond. Missed the corrected turn before the wash out, and ended up trekking through the backcountry then circling around. Otherwise, great trail.

great piece of outdoors. watch out for the falls they can be slippery

First time ever snowshoeing! Was really lucky to have had someone else out there a day before me to have patted down the snow and made a trail. Made it doable! View up top was great. Will come back when the snow is lower and definitely when it’s all melted.

Beautiful trail with a lot of landscape variation, beautiful scenery around the end of Cranberry Lake and a great view from the top. Trail really should be rated as moderate rather than hard-- it's basically flat for the first 4 miles, then a slow incline for the next mile. The only steep bit is the last half mile.

Lots of trails in this area and lots of possible variants around here. With spurs out to High Rock, High Falls and Cat Mtn my GPS read just shy of 20 miles. I like to save Cat Mtn for last so I do this counter clockwise. As others have said it is wet and usually buggy. Traffic is moderate on nice weekends and virtually non-existent during the week or off season.

Our family had a great time hiking to Cat Mountain. We didn't hike from Wanakena, which would add about 2 extra miles each way. We took a boat to to Janacks Landing and hiked from there. I would say it's a moderate difficulty hike because it's only got steep for the last .4 mile. There were no other hikers on that trail but us though it was a beautiful day, so we had Cat Mountain all to ourselves!!!

The trail is absolutely beautiful. My 3 kids, 2 dogs and I did this today. we couldn't do the whole thing, we did do a lot of it. There was a huge stream from all the rain we couldn't cross. It is muddy so be prepared for that. We loved it though.

Please wear long pants and waterproof shoes. Bring bugs spray.
It is a cool trail just a little too wet.
It's a hard trail for me especially going up to cat mountain....
Going to cat mountain and then high fall and back the same way is about 16.3 miles.

it's not a hike for the faint of heart.. but please don't let me saying that discourage you.. there are prestige trout fishing pounds at the end of the hike at the base of the mountain that are rich in brook and brown. but make sure you have time to fish! I first hand know having to hike out at ten - eleven o'clock at night and it's at the very least not fun lol.. I am thankfully a native of the five ponds wilderness and have done the hike many times.. even if your not a fisherman, the views from the top of cat Mountain are some of the best in the Adirondacks and by far the best in my local region and it's definitely well worth the trip! P.S. the pictures of the two guys on top of the mountain were taken by my best friend and i and also feel free to look me up on Facebook and let's plan a camping/fishing trip, the more the merrier!

Had some great sights and was well maintained. Weather caused me to shorten my trip to an out and back to Janack's Landing along the eastern edge of the trail. Janack's Landing had a nice lean to and a beautiful view of the lake. Only bad thing was that the trail was extremely muddy and underwater in some areas, so expect to get your feet wet or bring waterproof boots.

This is a really fun, very easy trail. I did it as an overnight in mid-July 2015. The western half of the trail was EXTREMELY wet. My feet were soaked for at least 8-10 miles. We did the loop clockwise and started on a late Friday afternoon. We spent the night at Janacks Landing on the shores of Cranberry Lake and finished the hike on the second day. Janacks is a great campground. The lean-to is in excellent shape and there are 3 or 4 other tent sites within 50 yards.

If I were to do the hike again, I would take 2 full days so I could get in some fishing. I would stay at High Falls camp where there is another great lean-to and several tent sites. There is one camp right below the falls that is amazing. We swam in the pools at the top of the falls and the water was glorious.

The hike is definitely doable in 1 day, but not if you want to be able to stop and "smell the roses". I'd recommend 2 days just to not feel rushed at the 4 or 5 really pretty locations on the trail.

This link to YouTube is a great video about the Loop Trail.

Things to remember - 1. Prepare for wet feet. 2. Bring bug spray 3. Bring an ultralight trout rod if you like to fish.

Directions are wrong. It's 3 to 61 to S shore drive.

This trail is great, but would be more fun taking multiple days to complete it. One part of the trail was pretty much under water, this was fairly close to the end/beginning of the trail (depending on which trail head you start on). Overall very beautiful.

Amazing trail, some good campsites along the trail. There are a few places where beavers have damed up parts of the trails but simple to get around. If you follow directions from the app it don't take you to the trailhead, if using a GPS look up south shore road.
