This trail is a portion of a longer path to Hogencamp Mtn (see Hogencamp Mountain via Lichen Trail Loop). This trail is moderate, with many up and down segments, not a straight ascent. The most striking feature of Bald Rock, and its neighbor Hogencamp, are the long, multiple rock plateaus. A hiker's foot will be on solid rock just as much as soil for long trail stretches! Please note that it has been reported that Route 106 is closed from Kanawauke Circle to Rt 17. Show more

This loop is known as the Africa Loop because of its shape. From the trailhead on 106, head south on the Red Dot. This will take you immediately up Tom Jones Mountain. See the shelter on your left, slightly east of the trail. Heading down, continue on the Red Dot after crossing the Victory, a blue V on white blaze. Head up Parker Cabin Mountain. You will come to a yellow triangle trail on your left which heads immediately down Parker Cabin Mountain. Follow the yellow triangles down to Lake Skenonto. In mid June there is mountain laurel blooming all along these trails. See Victory trail at the lake and make a left, taking it north/west to the RD. It follows a road for a little while. Come back to the RD and head back up Tom Jones Mountain, enjoying the laurel and boulders on the way up. Show more
