on Stone Valley Trail

Hiked the full loop starting on the side by the fire station. Some parts of the trail were poorly marked (especially when locating the entrance to the second part of our hike near the electrical towers, and beginning that portion of the trail.) the hike was absolutely beautiful, and lots of changes of scenery to take in. Took approximately 2 hours on each side of the river. Very lovely, all in all - so many waterfalls - and not extremely challenging.

Great views. Mostly well maintained, dome tougher spots. Would do it again.

Great views, quiet. Mostly well maintained. Some tough spots. Would do it again.

Fun trail nearly got lost

Neat path with a few nice scenic views. Easy and moderate traffic. There was also a party going on at the boathouse. Still, it wasn’t a bother. People on the trail were friendly.

DO NOT BRING YOUR DOGS HERE. As far as the trail is concerned, I am not sure if it is safe or not for them. What I do know is that at the start of the trail, it runs along a couple of backyards. Not even 30 seconds in, my dog was attacked from behind by a dog that lives in the first home’s property. No owners to be found, until the very end when my helpless dog was laying on the ground being attacked, bitten, and clawed. When the man finally showed up, all he had to say for himself was that I was “on his property”. Apparently he is unaware that a trail runs along his backyard. Be warned....

Great trail!

Walked in just about 1.5 miles from the southern end. For the most part a very pretty trail, esp. the pines by the river. The limestone rocks and the old quarry added to the experience. You go by some houses, and you hear the road for part of it, so it's not the wilderness, but it's a very nice walk. Be careful, some of the stairways seem under-maintained.

I started out at the south entrance. I saw 4 other people along the trail on a weekday. I really liked the first section along the river. It was beautiful and the trail was challenging in some areas with some small inclines through the woods. The trail got weird because we end up walking right alongside a pipeline that was just very creepy( mind you I was hiking alone, so if I had been with someone else I might not have felt this way). As the trail connects with the sugar island loop , I felt like there was a lot of overgrowth, and then there was a detour so I decided to head back. I didn’t make it around the entire loop, but still got a 6 mile hike in and got a fairly good workout. I hiked and did some trail running along the way.

The side of the trail shown here is in good shape, but the far side of the loop is hard to follow and there are tons of trees down in the trail. It would be 5 stars if not for this.

This is a beautiful hike, well worth the time.

perfect day hike!

Great trail, generally well maintained, except for some blow down from a recent storm. Still, trails are well marked and easy to get around downed trees. Beautiful setting.

Amazing trail.... Most of the trail follows the river. We just hiked it and the wild flowers were everywhere. Peaceful and not to many people on trail. A few steep parts but nothing crazy..

Absolutely gorgeous trail! Southern and northern parts are relatively easy; mid part is a bit up-and-down but nothing too heavy. Few very nice spots to look at the river and enjoy.. will definitely come back!

Easy trail that everyone in the family can enjoy. Will have to navigate over or around some of the down trees along the trail. Play by the water and collect some of the rocks.

Magnifique !!! Les sentiers sont très beau avec différents points de vue sur la rivière. Et que dire des chutes

Fairly easy half day hike with great views of several waterfalls. Certain spots aren't marked well but this app helps keep you on the trail.

Stunning and very easy. There is even one portion of the trail that runs along someone's backyard so they decorated it with flowers which is a very cute touch. Great fall hike.

Lovely trail. Solid footing, numerous great views of the river, some quick but steep and challenging climbs.

Could stand to have updated trail markings. And watch your kids and pets near some of the "outcroppings".

This is the most beautiful river I have ever seen! It had been raining a lot over the past few weeks, and it gave the river a lot of power. Along the fairly easy trail, each view of the water was incredible. There were multiple falls areas. My friend said she'd never seen it so high, but that it's still beautiful when the water is running normally. Easy trail, beautiful forest, beautiful water!

Great trail. If you do all of it, the 'high water detour' near sugar island is still flooded. Also the trail is littered with ticks, so be careful to dress appropriately.

Great beginners trail and family trail. Pet friendly.

Amazing views of the Northern Lights during a x skiing through SUNY Potsdam Outing club.

Great winter hike and snowshoe walk (we were with cross country skiers who had a harder time, we'd recommend against trying to ski). Trail runs along the river which is beautiful, full of rapids and falls. If you park near the power station (not the Colton side) the trailhead is a little tricky to find. Walk past the station and stay left, follow the fence around the water tower and the trail is on your right just next to the base of the water tower, marked with blue diamond tree markers.

Gorgeous trail! So many waterfalls, and it was so well marked. We did the trail end to end, and it took us 3.5 hrs. (that included stopping to take pictures)

The falls are beautiful and offer some good bouldering spots when the water is low. Absolutely gorgeous

This is a good one for running or biking. It's still quite new and is so smooth it practically seems paved. Pretty nice views too, though not quite "rustic" enough for my tastes.
