This trail is difficult but SO worth the views and I highly recommend it for experienced hikers!! The loop is definitely longer than 15 miles...closer to 20/25. The whole way to Dix is unmarked but there is a fairly clear path - it helped that other hikers were just ahead of me (and knew where they were going) so I followed fresh footprints. The descend from Dix is marked, and long - I recommend taking the Beckhorn trail down as opposed to hunters pass (much quicker). The rock face scramble up to macomb is a bit technical. There is still a whole lot of snow when moving through each summit, definitely bring spikes. The bugs were really bad too. I also got so scraped up from all of the tree branches so it might help to wear pants and long sleeves. Parking near dix trailhead is closed and that last bit of road blocked off- so you have to park about two miles from trailhead. I parked at 545am and got the last parking spot. I finished at 445pm and was able to hitch a ride back from near the trailhead to my car. Definitely doable in a day if you keep moving.

Hardest and longest hike I’ve done yet. Lots of snow still and overgrown. Kept losing track of the herd trail. Awesome views from each mountain though!

5/16/2020 Gorgeous views at the end, great hike. IMPORTANT NOTE: access road is currently inaccessible to vehicles, so you must park all the way at Blue Ridge Rd making it about 6.8 miles each way, over 13 round trip. The 13 miles on gravel road goes by quickly, but leaves your feet tired, so plan for 13 not 5.8 until the road is fixed (could be a few months)

A few friends and I did this trail yesterday, we had to park by clear lake and walk the 2 miles to the trail head. From there we hiked in and was mainly flat until the 2nd camping area and the elevation increased quick! The views at dix are incredible After six going over to hough it interesting, there’s no trail so i relied on the app to keep me on course and someone else’s foot prints so thanks to him! Getting to the other peaks went bad only a little while getting to them We didn’t have time for grace peak due to taking a while getting through the unmarked trails and being in waist deep snow but that’s ok, another note after macomb you go down a rock slide and there is a trail that will be off in the woods to the right We went straight down and that took a while also Over all we hiked 24 miles in 15 hours Long day for sure and probably the most challenging hike! It was awesome

not a good time to hike this trail!! the first 2 miles are flooded with 3 inches of standing water, the snow is starting to melt so there is running water under all the ice and snow, every few steps you take your foot falls through, thigh deep with your feet getting wet and stuck in the water underneath! these conditions also made for dangerous stream crossings. had to turn around 1/2 mile from the summit of hough because the conditions were too dicey. the access road is also closed right now which will add 4+ miles round trip to this hike.
