Very doable. Did it ccw and the way up (red) was rockier and the way down (red to blue) was muddier. Pretty easy otherwise. Views from the tower, one view spot on the way down. Good hike for a half day activity (drive from 17 included).

nice walk in the woods and a beautiful view from the fire tower.

on Alder Lake

I’ll preface that we did this with a 3 year old (not as serious hikers).

We did this trail on a sunny, but cool day. The old mansion foundation was fun. About 2/3rd of the trail was wide, clear and easy to walk along with a toddler. Lots of nice little bridges, springs, and wildlife. Good shade. The last 3rd was muddy, but fun with frogs hopping and signs of beavers. Had a quick wade in the pond to cool off. (There was a clean but no-frills portajohn near the parking lot, too.)

I’ve never climbed a mountain and I chose to do Balsam Lake Mountain because of the fire tower for my birthday. M

Does the trail have spectacular views? No, but it’s well marked which is exactly what I was looking for.

The last 3/4 miles were brutal, but in a good way. Once I got to the summit it all became worth it.

The weather was great, the views were breathtaking, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

10/10, would recommend.

A very nice hike! The view is best from the firetower, the tree cover at the top prevents most horizon viewing. We did the loop with our dog and ate a packed lunch at the picnic table at the summit. There were two very nice stewards on duty and the ranger cabin was open to the public, with displays and information. However, we did see quite a bit of what looked like giant hogweed on the trail. The most was on the climb up, especially as we neared the spring location, and there was some on the way down. If that is indeed what it was, be careful. I didn’t want to examine it too closely and risk getting sap on my skin. Edit: I heard back from the DEC, they’ve checked the area after a few calls and it is cow parsnip, not giant hogweed, so that’s good news!

A good bit of exercise walking up the snowmobile trail from Mongaup Pond Campground. There are a few muddy spots, but it's very peaceful and quiet. The trail is always very visible, but it isn't well cleared during the spring, which allows some pretty wildflowers to grow.

The trail road is blocked by a snow bank two miles before the trail is supposed to start. wait until spring or be prepared to snowshoe through deep snow. Didnt make the attempt at a summit because i wasnt prepared for the extra distance

Nice, peaceful hike. Very gentle. Combined with Graham for a 4 hour trip. Great hike, great trail.

Great hike. No view. Listed as a bushwhack. Not much of one. Herd paths to the top. First mile marked level trail. Lots of leaves down and a bit slick. A must do for the 3500' challenge.

I hiked around lake out to ridge overlook for 9.5 miles round trip, 1300 elevation gain. Easy hike and less rocky than many trails in area. Watch out for hunters in fall.

Fantastic hike especially this time of year

the trail on the east side is really obscured by countless fake trails, none are hard but many go through campsites.

Fantastic DEC run campground

Great hike, didn't bushwhack it, but started off millbrook road. Cut off the trail before the fire tower. The old radio tower ruins were cool, hung out for an hour, then found a campsite lower down on the way out. Great hike with great views at the top

Hiked up to the vista, not much to look at but along the way there's some nice areas and scenery. Camped at the sites on Alder lake, very weekend all around

Another great hike and fire tower. The volunteers at the rangers cabin on the summit were very helpful and informative.

Hiked up to hodge pond from beech mtn rd. was pretty easy, the pond was beautiful, hiked around the pond then decided to go back via the snowmobile trail that leads to mongaup pond campground, walked through the grounds and back up to beech mtn rd parking area. Definitely a nice day!

Don't know if this is the same hike as the 1 off of mill brook rd, but nice hike with a fire tower at the top.

Nice walk. Pretty Lake. Last time I was there the mansion was still standing. Good fishing for trout & bullhead. Clean & maintained.

A lot of trails & game trails off site. Easy walk. Pretty flat. Swampy in spots. Good fishing for kids with boat rentals available. Good stream fishing nearby. Some good, wooded & secluded campsites along pond. Great family campground without the suburban & urban surroundings. Ameneties.

Wife and I took advantage of nice weather to do a complete circuit around the lake starting from the right side. The bridge was washed out, but was able to navigate across thanks to some large cobbles and boards in the vicinity. After rounding the half way point, the rest of the hike was easier than the first part. Any interested in checking this out, would recommend you bring a hiking stick as certain parts of path may be muddy or unstable.

Mostly a wide Rugged Rocky Trail. Icy Stream. I came within inches of riding over a 5-6' pregnant Timber Rattler.

This is a great family campground, with canoe rentals and a beach on the lake. Major downside was that our site (44, Loop B) was next to a leachfield and quite stinky. Nearby sites were not bad. Did not detract from our overall positive impression.

Easy hike for kids 6 and up. Nice well kept trail with bridges over the water areas.
