Don’t do it with a fullruck

I completed this hike in July. I recommend starting early, at sunrise or even 30 minutes before to beat all the traffic. Lots of people make this hike during the summer and trail can become very crowded. The hike is a nice balance of flat terrain, forest, open hiking above the tree line, climbing, and even some rock scrambling. It’s hard on the feet and ankles as there are lots of rocks to maneuver on the trail. This is most difficult ~5500 elevation hike I’ve done, but the payoff at the peak was worth it. You get 360 panoramic views of the high peaks region..

a family bucket list hike. we started from the loj at 6am and we’re back around 4:30pm. it was a LONG HARD day but so worth it! the views from the top are amazing!

we took three long breaks - at indian falls on the way up and back, and again at the summit. so we probably could have finished faster but the breaks really helped keep everyone from bonking.

the entire family is still sore today (wednesday) and we did the hike sunday!

Long and challenging but well worth it. Doing this loop gives a nice diversity of things to see as opposed to the shorter out and back to top Algonquin. Highly recommend

Absolutely stunning views at the top, even with fog. Hiked it with another girl (we're both mid 20's) took us 8.5 hours total, with about a 45 minute stop at the top and minimal breaks. Definitely tough for the last mile and a half, but so worth it! also my Fitbit said it was closer to 18 miles.

my 1st high peak, and what a hike it was! I wasn't quite ready for the last mile and a half of rock scrambling but I made it and it was well worth it! Breath taking veiws. Took me longer than most, 12 hours. I took many breaks, I think most people can probably conquer this trail as long as you're in good health and have good endurance! good luck!

GREAT hike! We started at 6:30 am and we’re done just before 4. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. We had two 72 oz water backs plus three bottles and drank it all before we were finished. Stop by the creeks on the way down and soak tired feet. It’s a great way to rejuvenate! There’s a $10 parking fee at the LOJ too.

Extremely well marked, gradual incline till the very end, and a very nice 360 degree view at the top. Quite muddy in some spots! Bring lots of water and snacks for this one, becuase it's a long day. Start early! I'm an intermediate hiker and finished this in 10 hours, going from 6 to 4, including breaks. There are some nice rest spots along the way like at Marcy Dam or Indian Falls. If you are a regular hiker and have good stamina, this is a great hike for you!

The view at the top of the wave was amazing. Hang Ten!! As we got to the top the gravity thinned out and a friend of mine was swept into space. I’m mad because he had the pop tarts. Very fun trip and worth anyone’s while who enjoys sea bass.

Amazing views- awesome person to answer questions provided on the summit. Phenomenal experience. Coupled with tabletop and Phelps it was a once in a life time experience. Pay particular attention to your water levels and ankle support is a must

easy going in hard coming out, it can be done in a day but you definatly want to be in shape before you tackle this trail.

I climbed this for the second time with my 2 daughters, age 46, 17, and 15....We began at 6:44 and got back between 4:30 and 5 with about an hour break on top...it has some steep parts but then levels off occasionally to give you a break...the trail is well marked and you don’t really need a map(I never looked at mine)..I did have a print out with trail descriptions that I liked...the view on top are amazing...the top as really steep with lots of rocks to climb up on, I would not recommend this for first time hikers though if you are really out of shape. The trip down was actually harder for me because of my knee starting to hurt. Takes lot of water, you will sweat!

great hike. stayed at one of the lean tos around marcy dam, so it made the hike a wee bit shorter. other than the length and last half mile of the hike, it's not too crazy. good views up top

The summit of Mount Marcy is breathtaking. The terrain is very rough and a boot with ankle support, that’s waterproof, and cushion is a must.

Everyone always takes the Van Hovenberg Trail when they go up Marcy... You are missing 95% of what the area has to offer. Avalanche Lake is stunning and is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This should be the one and only trail to take when going up Mount Marcy.

The trail is long and difficult. It would be preferable to do it as a 2 day trip. Avid, athletic, and experienced hikers however can get it done as an 11-12 hour day hike.

My new favorite way up Marcy. Highly recommended.

this trail was amazing. a must do for backpacking or day hike. give it a go. you won't regret it. just be prepared.

Not a terribly difficult hike, just very long. Bring plenty of water and a rain jacket!

The beginning is not too difficult, but the last like 5 miles to the summit is all uphill and climbing boulders. The way down seems never ending and our feet were absolutely dead by the end. However, although we found it to be very long and I would even say one of the most physically challenging things I’ve ever done, it was absolutely incredible. The views from the top are worth every step to get there and when I got back in the car after the hike was done I felt extremely accomplished and amazing. Would 100% recommend, just make sure you’re prepared (mentally and physically)! We began at around 6 in the morning and it was supposed to rain later in the day but only did for about a half an hour as we neared the top. Otherwise the weather held up nice. I definitely recommended starting early, because with the want to stop and take pictures it will take longer than maybe you’d expect. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Did this loop on July 21/22, 2018 with two friends. This is not a 16.7 mile loop as this app claims. It is 18.4 miles. That’s per the Adirondack Mountain Club trail maps, not an inaccurate GPS tracker.

We hiked in on a Friday evening, starting just after 6:30P. First couple miles are pretty uneventful up until Marcy Dam. Some very modest ups and downs on some very gentle terrain. Shortly after Marcy Dam, where the trail splits between Van Hoevenberg and Avalanche Pass trail(name?), things start getting both tougher and steeper, but still not what I
would consider particularly difficult. This continues for another mile or so. Once you pass the sign that no camping beyond this point, things get steeper still. At this point the trail is moderately challenging unless you’re in good physical condition.

We ended our day 1 journey after just over 4 miles, as darkness was setting in at 8:45, and at that point we had made it to Indian Falls. Indian Falls is a very short distance off the trail, and provides a gorgeous rock bluff with a small water feature and beautiful views of Algonquin, Wright and Iroquois across the way.

Indian Falls is not open to camping anymore, due to erosion. It used to be a designated camp area, and it shows as there are clearings throughout the area. I am not one for breaking park rules, but we were extremely respectful of the land, left no trace, and hammock camped as opposed to setting up tents on the vegetation, so I don’t feel bad about it. The views were just too stunning to pass up. And the night sky was incredible.

From there, we rose at 5:00A to pack up, have a quick bite and push on to the summit. The remaining 3+ miles to the top were mostly steep and rugged, but very little in the way of any exposure or scrambles. Pretty vanilla stuff. But the views to the east as you enter the alpine zone are nothing short of spectacular. I’ve hiked the biggest peaks in all parts of the northeast states and these views take the cake. The volume, depth and density of adjacent high peaks on a clear day make for and absolutely stunning panorama that quite literally takes your breath away. It is well worth the 12 mile out and back trip to this point just to take this in, even if you didn’t go any further. Someday I will catch a sunrise from this spot. It became an instant bucket list item.

The last stretch to the summit is a bit rocky and has a couple interesting parts. But nothing like what you’ll find for scrambles on a Katahdin, Adams or even Monadnock. But the 360 views at the top are excellent. Very little crowds when we were there. We summited just before 9:00A.

Heading down toward Tear of the Clouds, Lake Colden and Avalanche Pass from there, the first couple miles of descent are rough on the knees. You lose a lot of elevation in a short amount of time, putting a ton of stress on knee joint stabilizers. If you have knee problems, this will trigger them, no doubt. From there it levels off and is very moderate for the remaining 9 or so miles, with a few short exceptions. However the terrain is very rooty and rocky for the entire duration. It’s a tough one on the feet. But a very serene setting. Very peaceful wilderness with endless eye candy in the way of mountain and lake views. Avalanche lake is a treat. Gorgeous setting. Great place to stop for lunch and dip your feet in the cool waters. The ladder and ramps offer some interesting play along the way.

From Avalanche Lake back, it’s a 5+ mile slog to the trail head in which your feet and knees are begging for mercy. But it was all well worth the pain.

Great trip, great trails. Would definitely do it again, pain and all.

Rained pretty hard and windy at summit. Got a little slippery, but other than that trail was not very muddy.

This trail has some of the most amazing views and some of the hardest terrain you’ll find in the East Coast but it’s all worth it when you get to the highest point in New York State

trail is heavily eroded but awesome views and a good challenge. Would recommend boots but I did in sneakers and in the rain.

I’ve been to Mount Washington and the views there are better than this. Although this is the highest peak in NY, the trails are well-maintained. First time I did this with friends and we did it for 7.5 hours, round trip. It was tiring but indeed gratifying at the summit because it’s cooler and you can see parts of Quebec/Montreal. Bring a lot of water (3L at least) and chewable candies, it’ll help you maintain your glucose and stay hydrated. Beginners will find this challenging but doable.
